just a std run of the mill turbodumb gated boost controller, but keeps the boost up so thats what counts

ebc I'd be most happy with but $$$ (even though a mate was telling me last nite he's getting an avc-r locally for $400, the %$&*)

Don't know about the ticket thing yet.

I got to have dinner with the stones brothers team, Russel Ingal and the Ambrose boy on our table. I think Russel was impressed at the level of yahoo pissheads on our table chanting 'Russel! ...Russel!' Got to see his new BA falcon car, sit in it, try to look in the engine bay, spilt beer on it, tried to cut the cable ties that restrained the pedals and got the guys to sign my name tag so I can forge their signatures later and get into the pits if the chanting doesn't work.

Makit Hardware in Balcatta next to marlows balcatta. bout $24 for the 4L tin. Compares nicely with the cost of VP 103 for smaller volumes and craps on it for octane and energy value, it's just not as 'green'.

It's well worth a try I have a litre in the fuel at the moment (20% mix) and it gives a good old kick.

I'm sure you will like the extra timing Macka.

Thanks Rev..

will look into it.

I just wanna be able to run standard timing with no rattle :D

Macka,

I still think that VP103 is much better for the price. It is 107RON and 99MON, which is far higher than Toluene.

Toluene is good, but it is not designed as a race fuel, yes it has been used in race cars, but it is not a race fuel. If your after serious performance edge from fuel then go the VP 103.

Toluene is 122 RON / MON 106.

RACE FUEL not RICE Fuel.

Toluene was used during the 'turbo era' of formula 1. Back when they were running 5bars(73psi) of boost in qualiying and 4bars(59psi) in race. The fuels were limited to 102 RON so 84% toluene and 16%n-heptane (has no octane rating to bring it back to 102). Making 1500HP out of little tiny engines.... ooooright!

102 octane and 73psi? the funny thing is the octane rating of toluene is only half the reason its a bloody good race fuel.

VP103 just a compromise fuel.

Formula one racing teams know it, now you do too.

rev210,

As you well know it did not ever get 122RON in a knock-engine when used in the right mix. Are you suggesting that Macka use straight toluene, I didn't think so.

I know that it can be used in race cars, but there engines are designed to cope with it, ours are not.

VP103 is a better unleaded Race Fuel, because our cars will die on straight Toluene. In the correct mix, toluene will provide a RON of 100, which will give you a bit of extra bang, but not nearly as much as the VP.

Let me assure you that the 'correct mix' of toluene can be higher than the suggested 100 RON without detriment.I'd suggest anything upto 40% or so can be tried. The higher mix will have low rpm and cold start issues but in small volumes for the race day will work out well if you tune the car for it. The horse power generated by the toluene is higher besides, it's a very high engery fuel.

For interest I have run a 30/35% mix , with no adjustments and no problems.

VP103 is not bad compared to the old AVgas, it makes a bit more power and is unleaded.

We can agree to disagree on which fuel to use. I will just keep handing you your ass with my much less modified car (hee hee..ho ..ho..)

rev120,

I'll be interested to see what times you get running the Toluene. 40% is too much for me, but if your happy to run it then no probs.

We always disagree on this issue, but that's OK.

I think the 100RON was with a 25% mix, so your right, with more Toluene you will get a higher RON, but I've never heard anyone recommend higher then 30%.

Don't get upset if you less modified car burst into flames while doing a run on 40% Toluene.

You wish!

Toluene is much less volitile than VP103, the formula 1 cars had the fuel tanks heated by the exhaust to get the stuff to burn propperly. If anything running too much toluene will prevent your car from starting and your engine won't be able to combust it, ie: unburnt fuel the opposite of ping.

I disagree because I've used them both. I pick toluene for cheapness and better power.

VP103?

Go kiss it in a tree!

I'd suggest that before anyone else tries 40% toluene that they ask there tuners, can't imagine many of them would recommend this approach.

I was only joking about the car blowing up, I wouldn't want to see you in flames, only the ones we trade in the posts.

So you running next week with 40% toluene? I'll be there expecting big things.

Ask tuner's who have used toluene you mean. There are plenty of them that talk out of thier asses, even the good ones. Make sure the tuners don't sell VP103 or Elf either otherwise you might find them a little bias.

Then again you can try a litre or two from Makit hardware at 10% or so and see what you reckon

yeah you want the % to be a little higher.

If you are a scaredy cat then start with 10%, I don't think that will make anything 'feel' different but, it will allow a snick more timing. After you have tried 10% then get 25% or 30% in there and you should 'feel' something, you can advance the timing a bit (obviously not too much cause it will ping). I advance mine till I just start to get a ping then back it off a little.

    • Out here E90s are the cheapest way into a sporty-ish car because everyone knows just how expensive the repairs can get. 8-10k USD for an automatic 335i.
    • Noted. Have noticed BMW are more 'high maintenance' for sure. They've attracted my attention as I think the used car prices seem reasonable vs other options, and the extra quality overall vs a commodore / camry / corolla or similar of the same vintage is appealing, especially the interior, and they are more on the sporty side whereas the others mentioned can be more cruising or economical A-to-B only.
    • Haha yeah I know, this is SAU after all, why are we talking about BMW's of all things!? I hear you on the 'don't have to worry about it' side of things. Having been fortunate enough to be have been able to buy a brand new motorbike or two...never really enjoyed them as much as I'd have liked as you worry so much about where you park it, will it get scratched, stolen, attempted theft, knocked over, etc...and yes dirty. Older less valuable bikes you can just go where you want and park it wherever and not really worry that much in comparison. And who cares if it gets dirty! Never owned a V8, and have had my eyes on VE / VF commodores for years but with their prices climbing so high, the M3 has come into focus more as prices are much closer than I've ever seen...is it a potential contender now?...of course need to factor in the S65 'maintenance' especially and like you said general M car 'tax'. One can dream anyway. But more on the reality front - did read the whole 330i thread as well and was a great read too, both threads enlightening as I've never even driven one of these cars! I do recall 330i didn't seem to have the same amount of issues for almost the same car (turbos and related differences notwithstanding)...perhaps down to getting it earlier in it's life so looked after better than the 335i? Perhaps so as your 130i has been good and quite similar, so finding a car that's been looked after well is the especially-crucial-BMW-first-step.
    • Nice. Dont worry about the time of not running. My current skyline hasn't run since I bought it. About 8 years ago.
    • It's also worth noting that I am heavily and unconditionally biased. I've had a lot of cars including some GTRs a fair while ago. I love my BMW's now a lot. They make no sense a lot of the time and the guys on here remind me regularly that I could get something else that does what I want better and cheaper. If you're going to take on an older BMW it's definitely a commitment. If you bail on it early you'll lose money and also the ability for it to put a smile on your face. Stick with it and it just gets better.  f**k I should get into advertising.
