plex 15th

rev and I just make this shit up, then we watch you guys blow your cars up, haha.

No seriously, mine is through a shit-load of reading and hanging out with mechanics and tuners that do race cars and such stuff. It's amazing what you pick-up. Toluene is not bad stuff in the right dose, and if kept at 30% or below will be fine, might give you the edge you need to sneak into the 12's etc.

I'm not keen on changing the timing on the fly, but rev210 is, and he seems to do it quite sucessfully. My approach would be to add a toluene mix to you tank, have it dynoed with the timing advanced, mark where the CAS should be, then when you go down the plex you can safely adjust the timing if you run toluene.

JimiH I think they just read comics!

I dont trust dynos to give proper load values, when i set up my Haltech computer on my first car the WHOLE thing was done on the road then fine tuned on dyno...

I would only change Timing on the road as this equates to realtime changes..unlike a rolling dyno

I think Macka is weighing the car down, Fat Boy Racing, lay off the beer and chips and you'll be doing mid 12's Macka.

Tuning a car on the road is a good idea, but it means that you will only hear pinging once it is quite significant. On the dyno you can get microphones to detect it at the earliest onset, and therefore do not damage the pistons.

I really think you should know how to adjust the timing on the fly.

This is something fundamental that everyone should be getting their hands dirty with.

When I go to the drags I take my timing light along and do a check before I start. With wear on the timing belt and things the cas position may have to be changed slightly to get the same timing over a period.

The marking on the cas is only a guide, ALL timing should be set using the gun based on the reading you have off the crank markings. And timing ought to be set properly on the road. You can adjust it according to conditions of temperature as well.

As for knowing so much: The more I learn the more I realise I don't know very much. I get some insight for all the wasted years building cars with my mates (some for racing) and taking kilometres of skin off my knuckles.

I think there is no substitute for 'hands on' both for making you hate yourself for ever touching a spanner and understanding how things really don't work.

I agree that hands on experience is important, and I have quite often adjusted my own timing, but I still think that they should have someone with experience to show them what to do first.

I have my CAS fully retarded, so it can't move, and adjust timing via a laptop.

There are tremendous gains to be had by changing the timing for different fuels and air temperatures, but one must realsie that there is always an element of danger in playing with the timing. If your experienced like rev210 then it's not a problem, but beginners should make sure they understand the principles behind the changes they make before playing.

A guy who was on the buffer yelled out turn it off its pinging......he was across the room!

Retarded it more......sweet......

Got home......cooler being night...good fuel.....pinging!

There goes my 296 horsepower..retard it by ear and now she runs sweet, no midrange but it is safer for me..

U would never need to change your CAS that would put your whole curve out Paul, u just need to up or down the timing at certain points in the map, Set a base timing of 15 degrees and then in the rev ranges u can run as much timing as you like!

Ud only change it if your Base timing varied from you 15degrees..

I could get back about 25hp from my 13Degrees to 18Degrees but i need to retard the top end.....cause thats where it pings, around 6000rpm

Well i had a bit of a play with my timing last wednesday night at the plex my first run felt slow so i advanced it by 2 deg on the fc commander did another run it was just under half a second faster so next run gave it another 1 deg advance the car was a bit faster again but i stoped there i was getting a bit worried about the amount of timing it was running at idle its about 17 deg advanced and then it goes up to 42 deg in the midd range and then starts to drop off as the boost kicks in. so by playing around with my car it managed its fastest time sofar 13.3 108mph :burnout:

Well done on the times, very good. There are alot of gains to be had by advanceing the timing but as you increase the timing you increase the likleyhood of pinging. If you have a laptop or hand controller to adjust the timing then this beats getting out and moving the CAS.

Killer that maybe because you maybe on the border of needing an external wastegategate.

If you tramp it boost doesnt rise as quickly so you keep your dialed pressure...on the street u usually take off slower then tramp it giving more time for boost to bleed high as u go thru gears....

This is what happens to mine altho it bleeds to about .9bar not sure if it is your problem or not....

It cant be electronic, if u dial in 1.1 then you should get 1.1 no matter if it is street or strip its still the same kinda road...

A little birdy told me you snuck in a Z32 AFM and Adj fuel reg...

Another dynotune and hp reading maybe?? do tell..

GTS-t VSPEC have you any decent input into this technical conversation?

Yep i got the z32 afm and fuel reg it was done at barries dyno he didnt tune it up he just put it on the dyno to make sure it wasnt going to lean out. He did a power run for me and it made 304rwhp running 1.08 bar. Again the car didnt boost as hard as it does on the street the only reason i can think of is the car was dynoed in 3rd there is not as much load on the engine and i dont get as much boost up:rolleyes:

    • I have the OS Giken R3C with the GM 26 spline input shaft in my 32(Rb32 with only around 750hp atw) and its a pig to drive. Its actually very forgiving when its cold when when its warmed up, it chirps the tires even when trying to take off slowly. Mind you though, part of this has to do with my clutch master(Non-OEM) so the travel on the rod is shorter. How did you get 1130hp at 85% @e50?! Are you running a stroker? If so, I would recommend the R3C purely because it handles the abuse.
    • First time trying out a regularity format at the Peter Hall Memorial 6hr. It was an interesting experience with everyone on our team being brand new to the format. Safe to say reading and understanding the rules and scoring system would have really helped our team. We finished firmly last thanks to the majority of all laps across the team being penalties. In the words of my teammate Matt “Turns out we are both too quick and illiterate.” Another car had entered before us and already secured number 12 so i needed to clearly cross them out to avoid confusion for any other blue calsonic livery'd r32s at the event. The team consisted of an R32, an AE86, a supercharged V35, and a Kia CEED GT bought at salvage. I ensured we all had matching "Peer Pressure Racing" banners and overalls. This is the longest session of back to back hot laps the car has ever done (20mins no cool downs on a hot day).  It was a true test of the cooling /oil control mods and they certainly made big difference! Enjoy watching me lose 14 concurrent points for the team:  Unfortunately I only managed 45mins of track time over 3 sessions (20min, 20min, 5min) out of my allotted 90mins before my gearbox let go. Something related to shifter fork resulting in 3rd being neutral quickly followed by all gears neutral, then it being lock in two gears at once and unable to move. Optimistically there were no bad noises. But I am yet to pull box out and diagnose. Fortunately i was also to snag a tow home while I slapped a permit on the Kiaa which came on a trailer
