Thanks for that Gary the rear goes together fine I just thought the bigger front spring was actually the rear.

The front spring seem to big to sit on the lower spring seat I assume the end that tapers in is the bottom but I looks like the spring will push it's self over the seat when any pressure is put on it.

I will measure the bar and let you know how I go

Yep I was worried the first time I did mine, but I compared it to the standard spring and bottom spring seat and they were the same. Refer to the following picture;

Standard_Front_Shock_and_Sprring.jpg

I have had mine in for around 5,000 k's so far and no problems.

The standard front springs have rubber squeak stoppers on the last coil, if it is in good condition you may want to transfer it over to the Whiteline coils. It may help with squeaks, although I don't have any, but it will fill up some of the space and help centre the coil. Just slice it around the inside diameter, carefully peal it off and then put some glue on it to hold it onto the Whiteline coil,

:P Cheers ;)

You have a hoist in your garage? GROUP BUY for time at your place! :P

Anyway, to me the way you have set up the struts looks ok. From other installs ive done i would guess that the big short springs sit in the front and the thinner taller ones in the rear.

Do you mind if you get me some measurments from centre of wheel to gaurd rather then ground to gaurd?

If you need a hand or anything in your garage give me a call or pm as ive started uni holidays now so I have heaps of free time.

BTW, did you get the whole setup? Id love to see how the subframe bushes etc are installed and could help you out with the swaybars (already installed them)

hey alex, unfortunately im not lucky enough to have a hoist in my garage ;)

i just use the hoist in the workshop.. which i call the garage :O

the car is actually on the hoist with half the suspension off... hopefully it will be all good tomorrow.. good thing the shocks come out very easily.. so its not too much of a stress moving everything around....

i didnt get teh camber kits... as i wasnt going to drop teh car that serverely.... :)

ok heres a few pics of the springs/shocks installed, no bushed as yet, and the back is 300mm from wheel centre to gaurd, and front is currently 360mm at the front cause its engineless hehe.

the rears still have 2 grooves lower to go :) and fronts have 3 grooves lower as well.

once the engines in it will look perfect i reckon, and then the r34 brembo calipers and dba alloy rotors will top it off :P

cheers

Well done Brad.

For the other guys, please remember that Brad has extra, extra grooves, for achieving show height, not driving around height.

:) cheers :)

well thats very true at the moment, cause without the bushes in, i tried to push the car out the way of the garage entrance (because we are getting a new garage door installed tomorrow) and it would not budge, i thought brakes were stuck, but no its the bloody rims hitting the coilovers :P

wrong bloody offset, now im gonna need new rims, because ill have to have it at stock height to clear the coilvers with these rims :( hopefully the bushes pull the top of the wheel out towards the gaurd enough, but i doubt it cause it is touching on heaps of the tyre :)

damn i didnt want to have to spend more $$$ atm... except on the engine is ok hehe B)

heres 2 pics i just took of it sitting on the ground, coilover is resting on the tyre.

If you get stuck, i know TypeM in dandenong have a stagea front cut there.

They normally have pretty expensive parts, but if you get desperate give them a call....

I asked 2-3 weeks ago if they had a stagea front bar there, they said they did but i am wondering now if its a DAYZ or a regular, because they wanted ~300 for it and if its a DAYZ, i think ill get it right away. So yeh, ill be calling tomorrow anyway, ill ask for you too.

What is the width and offset of your rims and tyre size, just so we all do not have the same problem

Thanks

Do u know if they have any dash parts alex??

i need the part that goes around the cup holders, as some nice f*ktard broke it somewhere between the auction and it arriving to me.

(if anyone else has one let me know as well, and what ur after for it .... otherwise l think l might start looking for a CF-look dash from yahoo jp)

hey darrin, im unsure of the offset, and even width as i havent measured them, and they came with the car.

how do i measure the offset, anyone care to explain?

cheers

From that picture above, i would say you want to move the wheel something like 20mm outwards...

Stick in your current 9 inch +38 dimensions and you can manipulate to suit as it gives the difference below

http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp

I came up with 8 inchs wide with +32 will give 19mm more clearance for you

Have a look in this thread

thanks alex :)

well i installed one camber set on one side at the rear and it has pulled it out abit, just hoping the second camber set will be enough B)

i think the 9" wide rims are the problem

so if i goto 18" rims the offset reccomendations are still the same arn't they? and its only the width that changes the offset, correct?

will chuck the second camber kit in tomorrow arvo after work :)

cheers

Brad

I just put the rears in. It was a piss easy job to get the old coil overs out and the new Bilsteins in. I left them on the standard circlip groove 3rd from the bottom and it is sitting at about 330mm, probably a bit low so I will move them up a grove for a bit more height.

RIMG2111.JPG

The only thing I wasn’t sure about was the bump stops. I didn’t trim them at all as SK had suggested. They didn’t look anything like the ones marked up for trimming so i wasnt sure how much to take off. It looks like it is just about sitting on the bump stops now.

Any tips on how long the bump stops should be and what end to trim?

Rear_Shock_Bump_Rubber_Collar_and_Retainer.jpg

Bump_Stop_Standard_Triming_Small.jpg

I also assembled the fronts but didn’t put them in because the lower spring seat dose not look right at all. The spring seems too big and it is almost pushing over the spring seat. Im worried that the first bump I hit the spring will move a bit and push over the seat. Then I will be in all sorts of trouble.

RIMG2099.JPG

RIMG2100.JPG

RIMG2103.JPG

The rear bump stops can not be trimmed from the bottom as the dust cover would fall off.

Rear_Bump_Rubber_Trimming.jpg

So, as you can see from the above, it is trimmed from the top, the same as the front bump stop. If you are targetting 340 mm (or higher) then they don't need trimming at all.

This is a picture of the 83139/Bilstein installed in mine;

Front_Spring_Shock.jpg

In comparison your front spring doesn't look right, the 83159 is a normal Whiteline spring for an R33GTR and the lower spring seat on the Bilstein is also the normal part number for an R33GTR. So they shoul fit together exactly as per the standard spring and standard shock, plus or minus a cfew mm for extra wire dimensions. Maybe check a few things;

The Whiteline front spring part number should be on the white tag, 23159.

The Bilstein lower spring seat part number is cast into it, E4 FT2-2003A01

The Whitleine coil should have a top ID of ~100 mm

The Whitleine coil should have a bottom ID of ~ 70 mm

Check those and let me know if you have different part numbers and/or dimensions. It has happened (not very often) that the wrong springs have been packed in the box, so the part numbers tag is the first place I would start.

Hope that was of some help

:) cheers :)

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
