Stock Tv/gps On R34

Ive tried searching these forums for information on the gps/tv flip up head unit in some R34 Skylines and Im getting conflicting information.

Basically I want to know whether they will work in Australia or not?

Ive seen ads that claim the gps can pick up an Australian signal, but Ive seen people saying the exact opposite in some threads.

Also the tv obviously needs some modification to play in Australia. How much would that cost? (for digital, not analogue). Ive heard that its not worth the effort, but I would like to know anyway.

Im only going to buy a Skyline at the end of the year, but I just want to suss out a few things first.

Edit: Oh and is it used for anything other than just tv and gps?

most likely it wont work and if it does it will need to be converted or modded for australian maps and english text etc as it will be in japanese. basically dont buy one with the tv/gps stuff and fit an australian branded one when it lands in aus. only the r34 gtr has the tv standard as part of the MFD and that can be converted and used but needs to be modded

Just wondering, if I just wanted to hook up a DVD player to the flip up screen how easy would that be to do?

Japan uses a different standard for digital TV than we do here so you'll need a conversion, I've heard around $1000 but I'm not sure if that's anyway accurate.

Im interested in this too ... if the tv reception cannot be made to work can the screen be used with other inputs, eg a dvd player or game console.

Best bang for ur buck I've ever spent....plugs straight in...and I can watch mpeg, divx, mp3s, view photos etc....comes with a remote too...

My 34 came with an aftermarket TV and had line in's. Someone on this site recommended this gadget...very cool...

Next weekend I might be going down to a dealer to check out a Skyline with the flip up tv screen, and Im taking a friend who is a mechanic to check out the car. If it looks good then I might buy it.

I guess if I buy it I could just take it to a car audio specialist and see what they can do.

R34 non-turbo auto coupe.

Yes I know the fact that its a non-turbo and its auto may not make it as good, but my parents said they will pitch in to help me pay it so I can afford it sooner, and I can't be bothered learning manual (at least not right now). Also it uses less fuel which is good considering recent petrol prices. It'll still whoop my cousin's V8 soarer's ass. :-)

I have those flip down TV screen and they are suppose to function as GPRS, TV and DVD player..... Some shops I've visited, 'Alberts' claim that they can fix the DVD function (JApan Zone to Australian) for $300 including fitting...basically remove the CD stacker at the back and put in an Austalian version.....

so far none of the shops I asked 5 of them including those promoter in auto salon, can fix the GPRS system...the TV function can be converted using some complex mumbo jumbo which cost abt $2000 (I was thinking forget it!!)....if your TV can be converted from NTEC or PAL or sumthing like that, not really paying attention, he says can be done cheaper....but still costly...mite as well get a new TV if I have to spend $2000 to fix.....so I didn't do anything abt the monitor yet...

I think those conversion thing is bull, unless the Japanese sell DVD for Australian GPRS...which I dun think they have...

It is not possible to use 99% of japanese GPS systems in Australia. They just do not make software for them. None of the big map software manufacturers for the Japan market make equivilent software that will run on the same hardware over here. There is 0% chance you'll get the standard Jap Nissan GPS hardware to work over here.

If you buy say a Navman or something in Japan you might be able to make it work, but i think you'd struggle to find something as primitive as a navman in Japan.

As for the TV itself the only thing you'll get working on it is maybe some line in composite source. I have done this in my GTR stock MFD.

To get your dash TV to play digital free to air TV you're going to need a digital set top box ($150 - $300) and a power convertor to run it on 12volts ($80 - $200) and modify the TV to take composite in signal if required ($$$????). You will also need to run an antenna somewhere, possible that the car already has one though.

Then you need to find a place to store all this junk in the car. Set top boxes arent exactly small and those power convertors get pretty hot.

Doesn't run on batteries...I bought a car cigarette power adaptor...works a treat...watch music videos, mp3s even pR0n The best thing is I download movies into it and I can plug it strraight into any TV and watch as well.
