My radiator finally has a crack in it.

No Radiator Shop in Nelson has anything that is compatable. Aparently the radiator in my car is a real oddball....and has a weird mounting setup.

What will fit into the hr30 with a l20et? Anyone know, i'm in serious need of advice here.

Regards, George

George,

Somebody has done a number on it, because the parts book, although doesn't include all the radiators available for the model, specifies ONLY 1 for all L series engines and then ONLY 1 radiator support panel for all models, sedan, van, hatch & coupe.

All I can suggest is you get your local radiator guy to check his NATRA measurement section in his catalogue to come up with something as close as, or maybe an MR radiator will fit, as it's in the book as the same.

Where is Nelson, you talking as in bay NSW or ???????

I have DR radiators in Sydney, but I'm going to change them as well, away from antiquated copper and brass to alloy.

NATRA? Nelson, New Zealand (top of South Island).

I said to the radiator dude that i'm sure a MR one would fit and he didnt have a clue what i was talking about. ..I was thinking maybe a Pintara one would fit? But as its a r31 i guess its a long shot. Its weird that in the catalouges he had it only showed 87-91 Skylines and then it just said Skyline GTR too (theres soo many GTRs so wtf....?)

I'm going to another place tomorrow which apparently may be able to help me.

Whilst your here, Do you have a VIN number for your PNV?

Sure its on my VIN plate :-P Its dark out, but I'm sure I can manage to locate it for you if you like? May I ask why?

Sorry! NATRA is "National Radiators" the biggest manufacturer of Automotive Radiators in Australia so I might be surprised if they didn't export to NZ.

Maybe you should chat to STAGEFUMER11 he seems to know a bit about them and mine is an 84 with just 157K on the dials

Trying to talk to him on MSN but hes not at his computer :-P

With no success of finding a new radiator for my hr30s l20et i found a place that was very very helpfull and it making me a aluminium top tank to replace the cracked plastic top tank of my radiator. I shall post pics once its all finished.

What steps should I take to remove the radiator? Is there anything I should know?

Hi George,

Where are you getting a 280K speedo?

I have this speedo from Jenesis, that I scored some years back, but my curiosity is getting to me, as there isn't one track in Australia, with the exception of Bathurst that I could reach any more than 250k at, why would you want 280K.

And may I point out, the Jenesis Speedo is an EXCHANGE transaction, you have to send a 180K speedo to Japan and then they convert it and send it back as a 260 modification.

As for removing the radiator, I think your only problem will be the auto hydraulic lines that mount to the bottom tank, but as for the alloy top tank, I am going to have an all new alloy radiator made for mine eventually and probably change the flow pattern to horizontal rather than vertical, as this way is far more efficient.

I will also be using the DR radiator as it is about 50mm wider giving more frontal area.

The PNV badge scan??????? I was going to get one of our local signwriters to scan the side decal and make up a couple of vinyl signs identical and at the same size as the badge. Do you think you would prefer one of these instead?

Cheers,

Dennis

Well i'll pass on that Speedo then, thats neat how yours has Volts instead of Boost :-)

I cant see any hoses coming from the bottom of the radiator.

I would LOVE a Paul Newman Decal if you could do that for me!

By the way the i sealed the crack in my radiator for the time being and its performing well so far.

George,

The volts gauge is standard in all Hatch models in Oz, all I did was change it over.

If you want a volts gauge tell me and I'll post one over, then you just have to change the wiring to suit.

Dennis

VEry nice with the 260k spedo, would love one for myself.

Its pretty much impossible to swap the guages around, I got one out of a 4 door es turbo. and in no respectfull way could i get it to work. Eveything on the back was diffrent

Don't know what model you have, but 84/85 models have a different instrument cluster to 82/83 models, but as both my MR & HR's are both 84 models, I just had the Auto Elec change the wiring a tad.

For me to get the 260K speedo, I had to export the original 180K speedo to Japan & then they sent me back the modified version, but it's the same speedo you send that you get back.

It was a pain in the ass.

Cheers,

Dennis

My radiators core has a split....f.cuks sake. Just forked out NZD$610 for a Custom Made Aluminium Radiator. I guess i should get a new waterpump and thermostat while i'm at it.

Guys another option is the std R32 GTR radiator , I had the Koyo make in my FJT Bluebird and it worked really well -saved a HEAP of weight and its cooling was phenominal . You will have to adapt to spigot mounts but once you do it comes out with a screw driver (hose clamps) and a 10mm ring spanner (two top bolts) . It will involve two holes drilled for the top mounts and a couple of nutserts wich is easy . The FJ had a piece of exhaust tube with suitable bends to transfer water to the bottom rad outlet as FJ and RB are opposite sides , top is OK . Custom rads are OK but expensive to repair (recore) as they are literally cut open with a band saw . An off the shelf can be very convienent , particularly when its 1/4 of the weight and lightyears ahead in cooling efficiency . Given a choise I will NEVER use a copper rad ever again .

Cheers A .

that just sounds like a lot of hassle to me.

The question here is do you want a radiator that really works and doesn't weigh a ton ? I looked into multi row custom made copper core rads and they were more expensive , much heavier , and don't cool much better than the std rad .

Your call .

    • Given it is temporary, I bought a  cheapy gauge mount (which has become enflattened) which I will screw into the existing phone mount Also a first for me; given this is a temporary install I could not think of any reason not to use one of those "add a fuse" thingies to source the battery and IGN power. I had always figured they were pretty dodgy but having a good look at them I think they are a valid option for sourcing power from an existing source without cutting
    • Finally for now, a bit more work on the transmission temp gauge. I was wondering how Raceworks do a gauge for $100 that autometer want $500 for. No idea about the accuracy of course, but they have cut a few corners that made things hard.  First one I mentioned above, the sender is physically difficult to fit and doesn't work with their own adapters (the extra fittings I used to get the sender into a hose cost more than the whole gauge, lucky I had stuff in the shed) Second, the temp sender wires are way too short. They are shown as 2.7m on the box and I know my routing was long from navigator headlight to driver's firewall back to centre console, but I had to lengthen them by about 2m total - 2 joins in each wire. Also, same with the supplied power loom, they needed about an extra 1m to get the fuse box where I sourced power. Another join in each wire since one end wasn't supplied terminated. I know they could argue that the wires might be long enough depending on situation, but when you consider parts and particularly labour, it would be a very expensive cheap gauge if you can't do the work yourself. And, only a small issue....but it would have been nice if they remembered to tap a tread onto *both* spacers they supplied for the bracket....I haven't had to use the M4 tap often!
    • If it does get a turbo it would blow the JCW Mini out of the water considering how "close" some of the tests were. Then again the Mini would probably get one of them Stage 69 tunes.
    • Next up, the extinguisher is mounted but really only temporary because I ran into clearance problems (the bracket fit fine....until I put an extinguisher on it). It picks up the seat bolt mounts but has long bolts running through 20mm spacers for now Doing it properly requires a bit of quick welding but I ran out of time, this will do for the practice day
    • Family events weekend but a snuck a couple of things in. NSW state champs were down at Wakefield so I got Gordon Leven's to bring some A052s down in the right size for some spare rims I had that "fit" (actually ex-Leaf Nismo.Rays in 18x7.5). Tyres are 235/45/18 so they are narrower than stock (19x8.5s) but I need to keep road tyres on it for daily use for now. In a first, those weird size tyres had been in the yoko warehouse for so long (4.5 years apparently) that they offered 4 for the price of 2....so 4 practice tyres for about $1100. Bit of a bargain for sticker tyres, considering the real purpose of the practice day is mostly to see how the various temps go (and the weather is due to help, forecast 32o). In terms of race wheels, it looks like I should be able to fit 9.5 fronts and 10.5 rears but 18 vs 19 height will be based on what tyres I can get in the right size - good tyres are very limited in available widths in diameters above 17" so some planning is needed. Once I'm sure this car will work I'll order a set of custom BC wheels like I did for the R32, you can get exactly the right width and offset to make the most of the available space in the wheel well (the 32 has 295s all round on 18x10s and they are awesome) Incidentally A052 are asymmetrical but not directional which is good news for rally use if the front and rear wheel sizes are different because I can swap them side to side on the same axle. Directional tyres are a nightmare with staggered size wheels because each tyre is fixed on that corner unless you can get it rotated on the rim (not really practical mid rally in most cases)
