Intercooler Questions

So after dyno'ing my pretty stock car @ 158rwkw. Im wanting upgrades :D

So been reading and looking at HKS ones they seem pretty good.

Whats the difference between that and say the CRD ones?

The pipe goes over or under for the HKS/CRD ones?

What other ones are avaliable?

Leaning towards getting a japan ready made one.

indeed ARC make very good coolers, but there is always the ongoing bitching discusion on using the stock pipe route will create more lag. I think it comes down to personal preference and do you want less piping and better throttle response?

I just got a cooler put on, it doesnt use the stock pipe route, it goes up and over the engine. No omplaints, and i can noticed a lsight increase in power. Need dyno to see what im making.

Hmm.... Still comes down to the brand vs non branded debate.

I had a friend's bros skyline where the piping went over the engine and the fan and the blate nicked the piping and it cracked the engine and broke it up.

AVO also do a kit that uses the stock pipes. One advantage of this is that you don't need to cut a hole for the outlet pipe. @ $1430

The main advantage is that the outlet from the cooler is not being heated by the hot air from the radiatior.

Yeah i have the same piping setup on my R34 and all

you need to do when doing this set up is to trim the fan blades

enough to clear the pipe and there will be no problems whats so ever

once done right. Plus this set up, i think myself is a nicer way of displaying

the pipes and also it gives some detail/looks in the engine bay.

Yep fitted my fake Hybrid cooler on the weekend it took me ages cos I was doing it myself but it was well worth can feel the extra power straight away and you can hear the difference. Just need to get a fuel controller cos with standard ecu car runs heaps rich and guzzles fuel. But apart from that for like $600 for the kit and no cost for labour i am very pleased. :rolleyes::)

If you have not done turbo back exhaust yet, then I would do that before doing a FMIC.

I put on the justjap cooler.

Now pushing a solid 0.7 bar up to red line.

Can you please explain more on that turbo back exhaust.

How much would that set me back?

I already have an aftermarket exhaust. HKS Super Dragger. Is that it?

noticed on mine that the split dump systems allowed the car to rev out quite alot easier and definately increased power.. if you still have the stock dump pipe down to the Catalitic convertor then i would invest in a new dump pipe for sure...

To get the most out of a turbo back, you will need to upgrade the cat converter too.

Note that fitting a dump/front pipe is a fairly labour intensive job - especially if the screws joining the turbo to the stock dump have rusted over (which they probably have).

But the differences in pressure drop between a branded and non branded seem to be rather significant?

On another note, don't just go for the biggest FMIC you can (ie 600 * 300 * 76), as lag is our enemy.

its one of those things where the lingo gets confusing...

dump pipes are really the first part of the exhaust that the turbo bolts onto. this part is where there are usually 2 pipes that join a bit further on in the pipe. one is smaller, for the wastegate, and one is larger for the turbine exhaust gasses.

here's a pic for a r32 gtr:

the dump pipes or 'extension' pipes bolt on to the 'front' pipe.

front pipe comes after the dump, and before the cat.

the pic CRAVED posted is a dump and front pipe all in one.

it shouldn't matter if its 2 or 1 piece and will differ from car to car, make to make.
