As topic and description. I need a new motor. I'm interested in getting a Fj20 non turbo motor that i've sourced for a great price, i can get a top mount turbo manifold for cheap too, will my L20et turbo bolt up? What needs to be done if anything?

Also, will a RB series or L series gearbox bolt upto a fj20? Do i need a different bellhousing?

I was thinking of even maybe setting up a fj20 with sidedrafts :-P

regards, George

T3 on L20a too small , plenty have turbocharged NA FJ's - you need to use a modern turbo with emphasis on turbine flow and response . This style of turbo will make more power for less boost (remember its airflow not pressure that gets the job done) and the extra CR pulls up the bottom end/consumption/throttle response .

Side draught FJ's are noisy expensive and very thirsty - cop bait too . EFI is way to go . You can always look into KA24DE's - easier to get bits for and no under bucket shims . One timing chain and the local Navara version uses 8.4 CR pistons . Bellhousing style is SR20 so gearboxes a cinch . North south inlet manifolds came on US S14 240SX . Jim wolf Technology does all the aftermarket goodies . 2.4 litres = torque .

The L20ET & FJ turbo's were identical in fittment, just the FJ has a .63 rear housing as opposed to L20 .48.

I'm putting the larger FJ turbo on my L20eT just for now.

Disco,

How much better is a VG30 turbo to the FJ T03, as I'm looking into an L28 for the PNV down the track a bit.

cheers everyone!

Adam RSX: 45mms or? I jsut helped a mate sidedraft his 2.0L Rebuilt Rally Pinto Motor for His mk5 S Cortina. It is horrible to get running correctly. What a absolute pain in the ass.

Ghostrider those vg30 turbos kick ass on rb20dets :( So should be amazing on a L or FJ

Ghostrider the VG30 BB ceramic turbo can be looked at as an RB25DET one with a fair bit larger ARR turbine housing and slightly (tiny bit) smaller compressor and ARR cover . They are drying up fast as someone (red face) let the world know how handy they are . You could use the VG30 item on an L28 easily enough , or use its all important exhaust housing on the RB25 ceramic BB if the L series can support 180-200 Kw . If you could find one another option is the R34GTt turbo as I believe its compressor and cover is slightly larger than the 25DET's cartridge . These made Rb26DETT (206Kw) power from 2500cc but with infinitely variable cam timing . From what I see I think the large ARR VG30 turbine housing with the R33 or 34 cartridge is the limit for these Hitachi ceramic BB turbos . Of these only the series 1 R33's used an aluminium compressor wheel , the later 33/34 used some form of plastic or composite material which generally lets go before the ceramic turbine if over reved . I'd be keeping it down to about 10 lbs boost for reliability - not too foul with 2760 odd cc's .

Sorry to get O/T , much better design than the FJ's Garrett T3 with Nissan exhaust housing . Low friction ball bearings and much lighter turbine , just not a high speed capable turbine .

Cheers A .

I forgot to add if you must use the FJ style T3 I would get it rebuilt using the larger 60 trim compressor which goes with the VLT's larger ARR comp cover . I think I may still have the VL cover and wheel kicking around if you can't find them .

Cheers A .

Other option that you can use is to use the compressor wheel off of the 13bt's hitachi, i know a few boys in adelaide have done that, works quiet well apparently...

Shane,

How's your car doing?

You get to use those parts I sent down wisely.

Cheers,

Dennis

    • haha funny enough I did ask him wtf he had been up to with the electrics....but no answer
    • For a daily just run Akebono ceramic pads. That's what they're optimized for. Obviously don't try to run it on track or anything like that.
    • Hey all, I'm sorry if this has been discussed before.  I have a 2008 Japanese import V36 coupe with nav but without Bose. I bought one of those AliExpress android screens, which for the most part works really well.  The only thing that doesn't work is the air con controls (well sort of) and the factory reverse camera.  The AC can be controlled fine but it doesn't report the change in temp and mode to the screen, and the volume knob/other audio controls from the panel don't register on the learning app.  I am pretty certain that the problem is the difference in the head unit between base model (Nav but no Bose) 2007-2009 coupes and anything after 2009.  Mine is the one with the blue connector all the way to the right as seen in this forum post:  The reason I think this is there is one wire left over that doesn't fit anywhere on this head unit, or in the factory screen which also uses different connectors to more recent versions.  I've seen the upgrade from OWC, and have sent the guy a message on eBay but no response yet.  I also don't particularly need the whole kit, just *maybe* an adapter for this one cable.  Did anyone else here have the same problem, or have any insight about what I can do to get this working?  I have been in contact with the seller but all they seem to be able to do is ask for more pictures and videos. Minor edit to add:  I have been researching and found a screen on Aliexpress that actually specifies my head unit in the listing, so these things do exist.  I will contact the seller to see if the wiring adapters are interchangeable with other screens.   Thanks in advance!
