Like said, on R32 aircon fan/thermal fan. I know they only run when aircon switch is pressed ( not like 33s, they work like a back up fan as well if things get too HOT, no one has been able to comfirm this but i've experienced myself ) but i'd like to run a seperate switch for it.

So, basicly nothing changes to the original wiring but i'll use something like a POWER TAKE OFF plug and run a manual switch inside cabin so even if i'm not running aircon, i will still be able to activate the FAN.

Resone is i really think the thermal fan is for sucking hot air out and just a 2cent thought of some extra secutiry for summer thats all.

My fan turns on without the aircon on, from memory its around 93degree's or something.

When the cooling system is working correctly even in 40degree heat I never had the overheat fan turn on, thats including with the a/c on.

Slightly dodgy clutch fan or dirty rad will see the overheat fan turning on, sometimes even without the a/c on.

I'm going to wire up the overheat fan via a relay to turn on with the a/c. I noticed a slightly cooler a/c when it is on.

has anyone replaced the standard clutch fan with a thermofan? would there be any problem with doing this? I'm not quite sure what the advantage would be, but I imagine the clutch wears out after a while, so the fan may not be as effective as it could be. That and it would make the engine bay just a smidge neater.

I've replaced my clutch fan with twin 12inch thermos.

They struggle a bit in traffic to be honest but that could have something to do with a highmount and bugger all heat sheilds too.

Once i'm driving my temperature stays between 75 and 80 degrees consistantly.

I've since gone back to the clutch type and have no issues with overheating. I do fear the clutch fan i am running is on its way out though.

I will be going thermo's again as summer approaches.

This time round I will be buying a set of bran spankin new aftermarket EL Falcon twin thermo's.

They are the perfect size in all aspects for the R32 radiator, very very slim and are $190 new.

That it, finally i found an answer.

Case 1 : i used to own a 33Gtst, replace the clutch fan with a 12' thermal. One day i notice the Aircon thermal ran and i did'nt even have my aircon on so i check and found out my relay for the 12' did not work=temp rised and the aircon fan come in the rescue. That's how i found out they not only activate when aircon run but for back up as well.

Case 2 : a while a go my 32gtr radiator got %80 block, PFC read up to 97c and aircon fan did not kick in. It only DID when i put aircon on with heater running as well and that was the only way to keep the temp in controll.

So, i thought 32's are a bit old and did not have that option, also i ask around a bit but no one were able to answer me until now CUBES. Now i need the whole wiring digram for it so i can trace it down, maybe a plug is not plug in or something. Can't not be my thermal switch as i changed a new one. Maybe i should take photos of all the plug points that relate to the aircon fan to see if my car miss out something?

There's an easy test..

The temp sensor in the bottom of the rad..

Unplug the plug that runs to it and short the pins.

The engine overheat fan 'should' do its thing.

I do this on summer days as it helps the A/C feel cooler in peak hour traffic.

Yeah, that's the one, i think it's call Thermal Switch, i had a brandnew one from Nissan.

The elect fan on the 32's runs off the temp switch at the bottom of the radiator as I'm sure you have worked out by now. The relay and fuse for the fan are housed in the fuse/relay box adjacent to the battery. If you want to switch the fan on at anytime you can do so by joining a wire on the correct side (non power side) of the relay control circuit and passing it through a switch (in the cabin) and then finally to earth.

When the control circuit is energised (by closing the contacts on the temp switch and earthing or by earthing through the switch you add), the contact in the relay will close energising the fan.

If you want to add thermos it would be best done by adding another relay with dedicated power feed for the new fan/s. You can still activate the fans by wiring the control circuit on the new relay into the feed to the temp switch.

I have installed a Davies Craig 14" fan and cheap chinese 10" fan and run both off a dedicated supply but still triggered both by either the temp switch or cabin mounted override switch. The result is 3 fans (2 off aftermarket + factory fan) operating to keep things cool.

At this stage it appears to be an overkill as the fans only have to operate for 15 to 20s before switching off again (its not summer yet). I should point out the Davies Craig item replaces a cheaper 14" chinese fan which didn't perform nearly as well.

When looking for second hand EL thermo fans the wreckers didn't have any. Well one wrecker had one but it was damaged.

It was then I was told about the aftermarket el thermo's.

All the wreckers I went to was able to get their hands on the aftermarket el thermo's. Price didn't vary must suprisingly, $190-$193

The are awesome fans.

Head down to a car yard and leave an EL idling for a while, check out how much air they push when they flick on to high.

They are a twin thermo mounted in a shroud.

I have just recentley had troubles with cluch on the factory engine fan on my 32 GTR. It was locking on hard and not letting the engine get above about 82 degrees which is too low. It was very noticable as it would make a loud whining noise and take a fair amount of power from the car ( like having aircon on but far worse). After pricing a new factory fan and then a set of 12 inch Davies Craig thermo fans, the thermo fans worked out a lot cheaper and would be a better option as they take no power at any time away from the engine. Very happy with the results. They were easy to fit, are fully adjustable for what temp you want them to hold, engine seems more responsive and powerfull than ever and makes engine bay look neater.

Just hope they will keep temps down in traffic in summer.

I tried 2 x 12" Davis thermo's.

I had issues in summer, they were however mounted directory to the radiator which is a big no no.

Upon pulling the fans off there is a HUGE dead spot in the middle, It worked out that less than half of the radiator had airflow through its fins. The thermo's must be mounted on some sort of shroud.

Build up a small aluminium thing if you must. :P
