im about to put my car on the dyno. right now my spark plugs are gapped at .8, but i fixed my coils (sanded the inside of them) over 2 months ago and havent gotten one single misfire since. i want to know if i can re-gap them to 1.1 to allow for a bigger spark. i'll be running 14psi on the day.

also, what are some things i can look at before putting it on the dyno?

do you run 14psi on the street? if your on the stock turbo its the sure fire way of killing it, the heat generated by it will kill the exhaust wheel and i doubt it will make any more power if none at all from 12pis to 14psi but there will be lots more heat. even 12psi is risky for the exhaust wheel.

with stock ecu id say 160rwkw ish ? without piggyback or aftermarket ecu then yeah about there. 12psi and 14psi will do stock boost cut and your power will go out the window if you still have the stock ecu, it detects too much airflow and cuts the timing

A larger rolling diameter tyre will give a smaller power reading.....fact and proven.

when people upgrade wheel sizes, they generaly also reduce the profile so that the rolling diameter is still the same - wouldn't think a tyre company would recommend incresing the overall diameter

but even if the overall diameter is the same, then the 19s are probably going to weight a bit more than the stock 16s due to there needing to be more material to make up the larger rim. This would increase rotating mass and thus reduce power transmission through the wheels...

well ill get 3 runs anyway, ill do one on 10, one on 12 and another on 14 and see how i go from there.

how much power should i be expecting?

ive got a 3" turbo back, k&n pod, fmic.

well 2 weeks ago I dyno'ed my car..

I got 158rwkw. Was quite surpised.

This is stock r33, stock everything. POD and HKS cat back.

On the day stantaic had his auto GTT, that only did 156.0, also a R33 S2 (links's car) did 156.5. Both of them had cat backs and had stock air filter.

As has been said a number of times - dynos are a tuning tool.

I don't understand why you're asking what 'needs' to be done prior to a dyno run... as long as the car is running fine, put in fuel... put on dyno.

I have to ask - why run a higher boost than you run on the street? It won't give you a representative figure of what the car is running in street trim.

If you want a dyno sheet to say that the car makes 4000gigawatts, then just photochop it. Dynos are useful if you use the same dyno, prior to mods, then post mods, on a similar temperature / pressure day, to determine a relative increase of your mods.

its not that i want it to show more kw than it is on the street, im just asking questions on what to expect, and you guys have answered all of my queries.. are there any other things to look at besides fuel filter, spark plugs etc?

i just want a clean run.

    • The new project has arrived. I have wanted one of these for such a long time, well before that meathead Clarkson drove one in Africa. I really wanted an E34 but I have some medical issues that mean I *really* can't bump my head and the lack of airbags in the E34 made it just too big of a risk.  I don't know why I've always liked these older touring BMW's to be honest, but man I love this car. She's been pretty well maintained for her 243k's with what appears to be only a single oil leak at the oil filter housing gasket. It has a bunch of updates including later model bumper and headlights, 7 series billion-way adjustable seats and it came with a few spares and another set of wheels with legal tyres. I got a unregistered car permit from the RTA and drove it back from Canberra on Saturday.                   First cab off the rank is cleaning it up for blue slip. I dont know how picky they'll be but I figured I'd clean the headlights, fix the oil filter housing gasket, replace the speed sensors (throwing errors) and swap the OE wheels (the M Sport wheels have a big chunk out of one of the tyres.) I also need to replace all 6 gas struts - 2 for bonnet, 2 for hatch and 2 for hatch glass. The car tries to eat me whenever i open any of these. My plan for this car; Ultimately, this is a budget car. I can't afford to throw lots at it and its because I have another car that I got this, if something breaks its no big deal. I will just maintain and repair it really. But eventually I want to do a manual conversion. It actually looks pretty straight forward for E39's and the trickiest part will be sourcing the parts.  I do need to replace some suspension arms or bushes because wow, she's a floaty old girl. She's also fantastically slow. Like really, really slow. When pulling back out on to the freeway on Sat after a quick pull over I needed to wait until no cars were visible before going.  Oh, and the guy I bought it from had a gorgeous R31 GTS-X in the garage. 
    • Do you have a picture? I assume it is a breather for gearbox oil as it expands, it should have a vacuum line run nice and high in the engine bay (R32 GTR has it on a top bellhousing bolt)
    • Hi all, I am putting an r33 gtst gearbox into a VL and have noticed what looks like a vacuum barb on the box (on top in the middle). Suspecting that it's a vacuum line but I'd like to double check, if someone could confirm the function of that would be great. Cheers in advance.
    • I’d love to find some where that can recover the dashes to look brand new and original. Mine has a very slight bubble, nothing compared to some I’ve seen though
