Insurance And P Plates

Ok guys, I wanna get some opinions from the guys that have already been down this path and made the decision

I've recently read about the fact that insurance companies are more than happy to take your $2-$5k and insure your GTS-T/GTR when your on your p's, but when it comes time to make a claim, they wont pay..

so i guess that leaves the question, do i pay for full comp, and risk not being paid out when it comes time to claim (touch wood it never comes to that), or do you just pay third party, fire and theft, and not risk paying $2k or whatever for however many years, and not getting anything if you have an accident etc...

very interested to hear from P platers with cars over the power to weight limit, and also from any former p platers that had any experiences with this kind of situation?

did you make a claim?

was it paid etc?

thanks

i'd love to know about this...if they didn't pay out i reckon they'd loose a lot of business. how many p platers driving modded cars that are technically over the p/w would they insure. they wud be able to get out of it if they wanted...think about it an R32 GTS-T with exhaust could be argued as over. they say factory specs....unless a serious mod has been done..they could claim that was serious and ditch the payout...interesting to hear peoples experiences

yeah im talking about R33's in particular, which are over the limit stock.

They'd lose a lot of customers if they stated that they wont pay out before you signed your insurance contract, because you just wouldnt go with them when you know they wont pay a claim...

but the way they do it, they dont tell anyone until it comes to claim time, and then they've already got at least 1 years premium out of you...

well my mate wrote off his 33 while on his P's (honestly not his fault, but the other guy kept driving after causing the accident), the police confirmed his story and Just Cars paid him out in full, althought they could have easily d!cked him.

I was 20 when i bought my 33 and decided to go with 3rd Party. Figured after 2 or 3 years, the money i spent on insurance would be about the same as it'd cost me to get any damage repaired.

After 12 months, the premium came down a bit, I'd done a few mods and decided instead of paying $700 for 3rd party, for a few hundred more, I may as well just go full comp. Makes me sleep a little easier 'knowing' that i'll be left with more than my d!ck in my hands if the car gets smashed/stolen.

yeah that sounds like something id do...risk it on 3rd party for the year..(im 20 in jan, so bit over a year if i get the skyline soon)

then go full comp as soon as i turn 21....hmmmm interesting

I will be getting 3rd party fire and theft for my r32 gtst... don't know who with yet..

I know that they aren't really going to pay out on my car, hence I taking out third party.. but what worries me, is if hit a ferrari and it gets written off, that they might go hey, this car is over the power weight ratio, or the window tinting is too dark and illegal bla bla.. and I'll paying this guy's ferrari off for the rest of my life....

I was speaking to a friend of mine who works in the insurance industry, and she was of the opinion that legally an insurance company cannot offer you insurance if they know that you arent eligable for it.

That is, in this case, Just Cars knows that your car is over the limit and knows you are on your Ps, so the cant offer you insurance if they wont pay out in the case of an accident.

Someone should really just ring them or something and ask.

they will probably say they will cover you, cause they can say that......

in the terms and conditions though it states you cant drive an "illegal vehicle"...

the terms and conditions also overights your policy..

when i rang up and asked why they covered me for the boost controller evan though its illegal the woman on the phone goes "woops you should of told us it was illegal"

Im in a simillar boat. Im driving a R32 GTR with no insurance... yet... I have been waiting to get off my P's so i can get full comp. (power to weight and i have an auto licence.) Just for about a year or two on full comp, god forbid something might happen. then ill get third party.

A mate of mine with a 2JZ supra got insurance with just cars and he was telling me that they ask about your "claims" history, ALL of your mods AND your speeding fines.

I get off my P's in about 2 months. and early this month i got a fine for 3 points, when i pay this i will either loose my licence for 3 months and be on my P's for even longer when i finish with the sentence. or i go in the 12 the month contrace. wich is the one when i cant get busted for a whiole year, and if i do, then ill loose it for 6 months. then this will lap over on my full licence...

And what im trying to get at is... do you think the just cars or someone else will insure me with that kinda history? And has anyone here mannage to get insurance with a bad history with fines or accidents?

thanks

JUSTIN

ok, so im picking up my r32 gts-t tomorrow or monday. ;)

cant wait, but i was on the phone to just cars for half an hour today organising insruance and its a B!TCH

im 20, and had my licence suspeded twice for speeding..

my skyline got basic mods and they want $2677 premium

and here is the great part... $2550 excess!

this is for full comp. paying that much they better pay me out in the case of an accedent.

anyways thats my 2 cents

i think its been made pretty clear that they WILL NOT pay you out in the event of a claim...

GTR NUTZ: please dont tell me you are driving around, in a GTR no less, with absolutely no insurance....

be honest when asked and u shouldnt have a problem. like ppl have already said, they shouldnt be handing out insurance policies if they know for a fact that its illegal for u to drive the car.

also, ask yourself this, is it worth riskin 20grand with 3rd comp ? i know its the cheap way out, but u dunno what the future may hold. what happens if your skyline is stolen the day after u purchased it ? i know it has happened to fellow sau forumers.

but yeh, in the end its your choice. hope u make a wise one. good luck !!

yeah mate i know exactly where you're coming from....its a massive risk on 3rd comp if it gets stolen...you only get $5000 (market value up to $5k and a skyline is obviously over that, so u get $5k)

but to know that u wont get paid out for an accident claim makes u think why bother!

in the end, ill prolly go full comp for a few reasons...a) the theft reason, and B) because my old man is the kind of person who wont have a bar of me not having full comp on a car like that...so ill do it to keep him happy, and if it ever comes to an accident claim, god forbid, well ill roll the dice and deal with the result.

its actually $4200 coz u've gotta minus the excess fee.

k i'll be honest. if there was no such thing as theft, vandals or anything along the same line, i wouldnt even bother with full comp. i'll be happy with 3rd party and pay for my own repairs. like u've said, full comp is around $3500 a yr + excess fees.

Its a very grey area this one. I have heard of many stories where insurance companies have failed to pay out claims or reduce the amount they pay because the vehicle was over the power to weight ratio.

But on the other hand if you read the insurance fine print it will tell you that the car MUST be in road worthy condition and I dont think every skyline on the road is roadworthy. By saying that i mean some of us have cars that are too low or modified beyond the Australian Design Requirements. So therefore you wouldnt be covered to the full extent of your policy if they investigated right into it. Insurance companies have still payed the claim in several of these cases before and the still have the legal right not to.

I drove a 250rwkw R33 when i was on my P Plates and I was insured. I know alot of other P Plate drivers do the same, but I think you should be pretty sweet.

The main thing you have to worry about is making sure you tell your insurance company about EVERY single modification you do to the car. My mates car got stolen and the insurance claim didnt get paid because he didnt tell them about the 19inch wheels he had on his car because he thought he would try and save some money by not having to pay as much for his insurance policy. The insurance companies response was that the 19inch wheels made the car more attractive to theives and thats why they stole the car. Right or wrong the can legally back out of the Insurance Policy.
