I used the buttons on the steering wheel from day one and it was a great idea. It takes a couple of months to get fully comfortable but then you are right.

You need to press the button a little bit before you want to change gears so if say you want to change from 1st to 2nd at 7000rpm then you press the button just past 6000rpm.

2nd to 3rd you press it about 6500rpm.
