On the freeway sunday morning I noticed on the AVC-R that I wasn't reaching full boost so I stupidly started upping the boost duty cycle to try and get the right boost.

What happened was that it all of a sudden pinged like a bastard and the engine light came on.

The engine light went straight back off and the car continued to drive fine.

Then I drove it around Wakefield park a few laps but the boost was really erratic. Parked and popped the hood to discover the hose going to the AVC-R was split at the T piece and hissing away.

Obviously that was easy to fix and the rest of the day at the track went off without hitch.

Then monday evening when I started the car I noticed it was idling a little rougher. It's not an uneven idle, just a bleh bleh bleh rather than the smoothness I'm used to. It still drives fine with full power.

Have I broken something?

mate i don't think it would have done any bad damage in that brief time of running high boost. change in idle sound could be dirty plugs or something similar like that. i would take the plugs out and have a look at them and if you are really worried do a compression test and leak down test.

what happened is the engine over boosted, the ecu detected the rush of air and overfueled the motor. your bad idle is b/c of all the extra fuel that the car dumped when it overboosted has fouled your plugs

Makes sense to me.

Check the code to see anyway adam, then check your plugs :)

Ahh the plugs would have cleaned up on the track I would say. It would also take more than just an over boost rich mixture to foul your plugs. Check your codes and then pull the plugs just make sure their ok ie insulators not cracked also check for tracking.

is the car down on power? or power feels normal?

most likely some sort of electrical related problem but then again.....

best thing to do is a compression test that will tell u straight away if you have properly stuffed it :)

Well I checked with the consult cable and there were no errors!

Strange.

I'll have a look at the plugs on the weekend. If I get up early enough I will do a compression test but I don't know how to do a leak down so I'll have to get someone else to do that.

Car seems to still have full normal power atm.

I would have thought the track would clean the plugs up too.

Maybe they are cracked or something else.

The car runs pretty rich normally. About 10-10.5:1

Compression test will show if you done a ringland you dont need a leakdown test for that . To do a leakdown test you need a leakdown tester you cant do it if you dont have one .

Ok I will do a compression test.

I just got another opinion from a quality engine builder.

Not looking good.

Thats what i'm afraid too , you probably cracked a ringland but it will show in the comp test , the suss cil will have lower comp , probably around the 70-100 psi .

Have you noticed any blow-by ? oil in the catch can ?

A bit more oil in the catch can yes. Blow by I haven't noticed.

Thanks Newkleer. Doesn't look like helping though ;)

Duncan - are you saying I could borrow your compression testing gauge if only you knew where it was?

I'm off to the RB30det thread. :):):(:):):)

    • Hey all, not sure how active SAU is anymore but will ask away anyways. Just wanted to get some experience on the 2008 model GTR CBA model.  I've hit that age in my life (43) where I'm like fk it time to get my dream (midlife crisis) car. Looking at importing one in and seeing if these can be reliable if the main flaws are fixed up. Plan is to keep money aside to do the following straight off the bat to future proof it: * install a stage 1 rebuilt trans with all new bits and pieces.  * install a new Bellhousing from the later model GTRs. Or potentially an upgraded stronger version like MAD or ATR. Besides the above two things and typical maintenance items anything else you'd recommend doing.   Been speaking to a few people and the engine on these are very reliable apparently. But keen on the view of the community here. Hoping to find a nice grade 4.5 with low mileage in Grey. I'd go black but swirls too easy. Look forward to your responses and feedback. Cheers
    • Do Alan and Keith work on Skylines now? I remember buying stuff from them when I owned my Ralliart Lancer a few moons ago. Definitely genuine guys and be excellent if they dealt with the skyline platform as well.
    • Hey all, I'm Gaston from Sydney's West.  I was a member on here when I was a younger lad and owned a mint R33 GTS-T. Ended up selling it and getting married having kids (yadda yadda) we all know how the story goes. Now I'm back with the intention to get my midlife crisis (dream) car ... a R35 GTR.  You'll see me about asking questions and searching the forums. Good to be back and can't wait to get back an Import again.
    • I have to put something here in order to post the photos. From what I could gather there's more enthusiasm for modified cars now than there has been for years. There were probably more younger people there than older (me included lol) which was a good sign.  It did seem like the record least amount of representation of the 90's era hero cars on display though. Like maybe one or two examples of S-chassis Nissans, and maybe 3 or 4 R-chassis. By comparison there were a lot of Civics from that era but in all there were about 10 - 12 EG/EK Civic Type R.  Euro exotics are always there in large numbers, led by Liberty Walk...... say what you will about kids using markers to scribble on a Ferrari F40, it did seem like a stunt to infuriate Ferrari enthusiasts, or Ferrari itself. I wonder if there's something more to it. Either way LBWK have done some heinous things to a Lamborghini Miura this time. They should stop now.
    • Engines and drivelines are not war stoppers for me mate, busted arse bodies and un-obtainium parts and panels are though Both cheap Brumbies I looked at had trashed tubs and a fair bit of rust
