Hey guys, a whirring noise has just started coming from the air con, sounds like a lawnmower in my dash. Well, maybe not that loud :P . Does this mean the a/c motor is on the way out, any ideas on how much it would cost to replace this, or does the whole a/c unit need to be replaced? I imagine it won't be cheap either way.

Cheers.

i had the same problem, had paper (wtf!) caught in the fan, it was easy to get out though... (mine is a R33)

just remove the kick panel on the passenger side footwell left wall, remove the ECU, unscrew the 3 screws holding the black cylinder looking thing up into the dashboard, and gently pull it out, it houses the fan.. clear it out and stick it all back in :D 10 minute job, and i put of with the crappy noise for months!

good luck!

does your aircon work popperly? producing cold and so on.

could be the a/c compressor that is getting weared out. so remove the belts to get to a/c compressor belt and remove it too.

then turn it by hand it should turn smoothly with out any odd sound and you should also press and pull on the pulley in all directions, you are looking for clonks and wiggling. if there are any your compressor needs to be changed

matt, got the same prob. its quiet when cold, if i got it on for longer then 15 mins, starts whinning like a bitch. still cools the bastard though. dunno if its the same prob exactly as mine, but my compressors ****ed, maybe yours is too.

yep, sounds exactly like what mine has been doing, on really hot days it would struggle to keep the car cool though and i have to turn it off after a while and back on again and it starts cooling.THis was happening for about two weeks and on friday it blew up!! It started blowing hot air, then there was a burning smell and a bit of smoke from under the bonnet, I turned off and the smoke and shit went away. So now I'm without air con and it's really ****en hot. Hope this can be fixed easily. Hope yours doesn't blow up!!

i got the shits with mine and bought a second hand compressor anyway. cost me $200 but its worth it. didnt have a chance to fit it though, front brakes locked up at 100km/h and i hit a parked car, but hey, atleast now that i got the motor out, makes the compressor swap easy :P

    • Thanks for reaching out!  It's a blessing and a curse at the same time.  I'm undiagnosed but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it in me... I have more half started projects laying around my house, shed, garden, etc taking up space and money, destroying aesthetics than if I added up all of my mates projects together. But, ADHD gives me the ability to hyper focus on things that no mere mortal could even  comprehend.  A recent pool build is an example of that....  I dont know anyone else that would be dumb enough and focused enough to take on then complete something of that magnitude. I call ADHD a superpower but it can equally be completely destructive if not controlled and focusedon the right places. Addiction is a major concern to ADHD people and thankfully my addictions have been no worse than projects, XBOX, chocolate and being an arsehole! It's often hereditary and my 13 year old son is currently learning how to drive it at the moment. Keep lurking! If i can finally finish this bloody thing at some point it will be a win for all of us ADHD'ers! 🤪
    • I've been quietly following this thread for ages, but this one got me. Since my ADHD diagnosis (and associated learnings and prescription) I'm way less inclined to wade into forum yarns when there are better things to do with my time, as half the time I'd end up in some kind of forum debate even if that wasn't my intention. I've not lost the ADHD "superpowers", just am a lot better at directing my hyperfocus into slightly more constructive things, but haven't stopped quietly lurking in here in my spare time.
    • Stripped the tank down and gave it a good scrub. It came up really good! Not sure if I'll just put it back in like that or give it a blackening treatment (such as Bowdens The Black Box). That might give it a matte look so might just run it as is.
    • @MBS206 Ha ha, yeah ADHD is a daily battle to not get drawn in to doing things you want to do that you know you shouldn't do!  Every single time I walk into my shed I end up doing something I started the day having zero intention of doing! I keep mentioning the 1 step forward, 3 steps back scenario and I'm tipping people that are blessed with ADHD (yes, blessed) are the worst at that!
    • We import a lot of cars from Japan. I'd say that approximately 20% of our traffic is imported JDM cars (mainly consumer cars like the Mazda Demio, Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Suzuki Swift, etc.). We also import a lot from the UK, but this has decreased after Brexit. Apart from the consumer vehicles, two of the larger, well-known dealerships frequently import iconic '80s/'90s JDM cars. I haven't heard of anyone importing from Australia, and they are not advertised (unlike Japanese ones), despite a lot of Maltese migrating to Australia in the '50s and '60s.
