my rims ar 17x8's i do believe 255 will fit i should think

I run 8.5" with my 255's, the 245's look a bit stretched. On my 9" rims I run 265's anything less looks crap.

I believe the 255x40x17 refers to:

255 - Width in "mm" of the tyre

40 - The profile of the tyre. I.E the smaller the number the thinner the tire is.. I hope that makes sense

17 - The size of the rim in inchs

I hope that makes sense

With tyres, matching the rim width to tyre width is the way to go for handling. 7inch rim is 205, 8inch about 225, 9 is 245 10 is 255.

yeah the 255 is the width in mm

the 40 is the profile which is a percentage of the width.

rev, those widths seem a bit optimistic, 9" rims need at least 255's to fit, preferable 265's.
