Attatched is a pic of my engine bay, the green circles are what I'm talking about. I am trying to fit my strut brace, but cannot for the life of me undo the bolts there. All I am managing to do is shave tiny pieces of metal off, and I am just wondering if anyone knows what would be the best way to get them off.

Can anyone help with this???

get a proper 1/2 socket.. long one, then a long extender. Should come off with ease. If not, resort to extender and breaker bar. 3/8 is useless for the heavy duty stuff, so use 1/2 inch gear.

Careful you're going anticlockwise - or you'll shear off the bolts.

awkward position! lol you obviously haven't done very much work on a skyline!! there is barely a nut on the car in an easier to reach position that that!!! :ph34r: enjoy it while you can.

With tight nuts (but NOT nyloc nuts) the best trick is to give them a good soak in WD40 for a day or so before trying to remove them. This helps break down any corrosion.

Also the other useful technique is to bash it gently with a hammer. Put your spanner (Try not to do this with sockets) on the nut, load it up to take the slack out of the system & then bash the spanner (gently!) with a hammer. This puts more torque into the nut/bolt but with less energy - result is you are less likely to round the nut.

just get a breaker bar and use it gently

make sure you use the right tools, otherwise you'll round the nut

Yup. 14 it is. Put a strut brace on my jalopy the othe day. Should be pretty easy to do.

If you're rounding them try WD40 like t'other dude said and make sure you have the right socket. Get a brand new one.

If you were using a 14 and rounding the nuts it's possible that either it's an old worn socket or a crap brand that doesn't fit properly.

Either that or you just had the wrong size.

    • Personal experience. Those f**kers burn. And are actually a PITA to put out. Next time I walk down the back, I'll snap a photo of what the inside of the bonnet looks like when that thing ignites. PS, powder fire extinguishers are useless on that stuff too as it's fibrous and when it ignites, it starts to pull apart. And you end up just blowing powder through a sieve effectively.   Like the big thing is, if it's fire resistant, it's job is to stop what burning? The METAL above it? It's just to try keep heat off the bonnet paint work.

    • That's more or less what he meant. What it really means is that you do not have to go full crazy on the build. Don't need the best oil pump, expensive rods & pistons, big cams, etc. You can upgrade whatever you want instead of using stock level items, but you don't have to. Having said that - any time an RB is opened up, if anything is getting replaced, I think the opportunity should be taken to do all the sensible upgrades. Pistons, rods, pump, etc.
