Hey Guys,

I've just read on one of the thread that to be covered by insurance we need an alarm/2 point immobilizer install receipt to be covered for any theft. Is that really the case? I wasn't mentioned those things by Just Car when I got my policy. They only asked me if I have 2/more point immobilizer and I said yes. But again, they didn't even mentionned about Australian Standard ones.

I've got a Viper alarm. I was recommended by my installer who told it is acceptable and good for insurance. I found out that Viper is not Australian standard. Will I be able to install an Australian Standard 2 point immobilizer on top of my viper alarm.

It was disappointing when I found out as well. Apparently they don't have black wiring. That's what I've been told.

Any tips/comments on fixing it with minimal $$

Hmm...I wonder if Clifford is an australian standard alarm as well.

I think you'll find most alarms have a 2-point imobilisation feature.

The one on the Lada does - your Viper certainly should.

Check the manual - or with the installer.

It has 2 point Immobilizer but not an australian standard ones. They have coloured wirings instead of the black ones.

for example.

mongoose alarms, they have black wiring, once you get to a certain level. you want black wiring, you buy a higher end model, and you pay more....lower end models have colored wiring because they aren't the better models.

so if it only has to have blac wiring to pass, you just need to buy a better 1

Did a research on the web and found out that most Vipers doesn't have black wirings as per following website:

There is however 1 alarm model that has black wirings. It is the 700ESP. Don't know if it is available in Australia though. See the following:

Also, is there a way to convert the coloured wirings to black wirings?

The AS (Australian Standard) ruling is that you have to have an alarm with all black wiring to meet that standard.

If it meets it then its listed on the front of the page. Any insurance company or alarm installer will be able to give you the code.

its AS-xxxx 4 numbers, i cant remember what they are off the top of my head.

The information is 100% accurate from the insurance company.

There is no way to fully convert the wiring without you being charged a fortune as its not an easy task.

The alarm might meet the old AS ruling which i believe was coloured, but that was many years ago now.

Not all brands have all levels of alarms that meet the standards, as some people dont need to meet AS standard as they dont have it listed in thier policy as requiring immobilisation to begin with.

you can either change alarm or change insurer... but its going to be a case of alarm as insurance is a pain.

On a side note... 1980... ring Shannons. Much more reasonable to deal with if you already have a good insurance rating and over 25.

Thanks for the info mate. So to be sure that an alarm is Australian Standard we just need to search for that code? Will it be in the box or manual? Some alarm sellers/dealers out there are dishonest. Need to make sure I'm getting the right alarm. Most insurance will only require a AS 2 point immobilizer. Is there a different coding for immobilizer and alarm?

Any recommendations of good ones (alarm)?

And yeah, I'll keep the receipts now. :lol:

If your alarm meets the Aus Standards it will be displayed prominantly on the box and manual im sure.

Ive had Cyclops alarms in the past, which are Australian made and AS approved.

its generally always on the manual.

Im yet to see one that doesnt.

My good mate does alarms and has done a number of SAU cars now... So i've seen a few manuals over the years

Its a pitty. I'm a fan of Viper and Clifford and they're both not Australian Standard. I believe both are better than the ones that are OZ Standard. For example, Clifford, they have the wireless immobilizer. WHich i think is better than black wirings.

Yeah l was going to get a viper alarm til l found out it wasn't to aus standards.

Now l'm in two minds as to whether to get it or get something like a the Mongoose M80 series alarm/immobiliser.

I've got insurance with Shannons (21 yr old) and i said the car is locked up, but (at the time) doesn't have an alarm. And i said to them, i know i need a 2pt immobiliser, but at this stage it doesn't have one. If the car is stolen, am i not covered? They said it would be fine, and i'd still be covered.

They didn't say anything bout aust standards, or black wiring. Just a 2pt immobiliser. Which reminds me, i haven't let them know i've put an alarm in since...

I got a quote from Shannon's and it was like 2K. With just cars im at 1020. So $980 is a big difference. How much ppl (over 25s with Rating 1) are paying with Shannon's per year? And do they really have pay per month instead of per year?

normally shannons dont insure people under 25 unless your really lucky and have good insurance record already etc.

yes they do have pay by the month like i said before, i know cos it comes straight out of the credit card ouch...

but i prefer that than having to pay like 1.9K upfront. Pay by the month doesn't add any extra costs either, it's just the year/12.

yeah, that's what i was told. Normally they wouldn't insure anyone under 25, and even then they'd have a good look. But *touch wood* i've got no speeding fines, and accident history so it was a clean slate there. But i believe the main reason why they said they would insure me was because i was a member of Skylines Victoria. Being a club member was the main factor in them letting me get insurance.
