OK, for those interested here is what happened:

Every thread and everyone in here points towards the oxygen sensor as being a major cause for the bad fuel consumption so i thought - it's only 90 bucks, i'll just replace it and see how i go. Headed down to Autobarn Chatswood, the guy there tells me that the ONLY replacement for my car (1989 gtst) is the factory one at about $600 (not sure how true this is). Decide against buying this and end up going home with some CO2 spray and injector clearer for the grand total of $25.

Took off the air filter and the AFM - cleaned the AFM with litteraly the whole can of spray and left to dry before putting it all back together. (do NOT use the spray while the car is on:)

Tanked up and added the injector cleaner.

My car is now getting over 400kms from a tank, considering this is from a starting point of 180kms per tank it is a massive improvement for $25 - ie the cost was saved within a week.

Worth a try for anyone else with the fuel issue before going and replacing parts.
