Well I was looking at a mates relatively new Maxima (last years model) and noticed that his steering wheel looks like mine, then I noticed that his cruise control buttons pop out of the left side of the steering wheel and took a look and on my steering wheel there is a place where the plastic is marked which looks like it would be an exact fit for the cruise control module.

So can we order a cruise control from nissan australia and will it work?

Group buy maybe?

If so, I know what you want...

I'm putting mine on in the next few weeks - and I'm going to put on the same one as I put on my R34 ie the Rostra Global one. It's all electric (so no touching the vacuum hoses, which is a good thing), has the buttons on a RF connected thing (so no wires up the wheel etc) (not to mention you can clip it off the wheel and give it to the wife to set the speed :-) and keeps speed better than any I've used before - much better than any factory standard one I've used...

I'll take some photo's of the one I put in the R34 and stick them up.

Sounds like a winner Ian!

If it is all electric, is it compatible with other replacement electrics, such as EBC's and PowerFC's?

Oh and ball park figure for costs?

Yep, compatible with anything... It simply has to plug into the speedo wire (to get the pulse), and then it has a electric motor (which is why it is called an electric cruise control) that goes over to your throttle and controls it. Works fantastically.

I had mine installed for me (ok, I'm slack) and can't remeber the cost - somewhere around $500 from memory. You can get cheaper ones, but the aren't as good...

So Ian, have you got a contact for where we could source these from? I dont mind doing some ringing around, looks like there might be 2 or 3 of us here who might want one.

Unfortunatly I wont be looking at buying mine till the new year though.

Last time I looked around it was about $100 cheaper than getting installed by the local auto electrician, I just gave it to him to do instead...Can't remember where that was though (just buying the unit), and for the cheapest price you'd get it off the net from the USA.

If you like, I'll get the exact model number off the one in my R34.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry, been a bit busy...

The rostra unit (with the rf remote) -

The remote just clips to the side of the steering wheel -

IMG_5604.jpg

The control box goes on top of the ABS unit, with the throttle cable looped around -

IMG_5601.jpg

And here is the actual unit numbers -

IMG_5603.jpg

so you need -

1) The RF remote

2) the control box

3) the right throttle cable

4) (for a manual) the clutch switch.

Hey Ian, does it just sit there? How has it been secured?

If you look at the top of your abs unit you'll see it has bolt holes in it to secure things on top... So Nissan must have expected something to go there!

I'll take another photo tommorrow of that..

Ian

Well brace yourselfs..............

Called up a couple of places and best price was ~$750 fully installed. Was kinda shocked and was really busy at work, so didnt ask for a price for just the unit but. That price is for manual and with the RF controller........

Wont be getting cruise control for a while for me :D

Hmm lucky mine came with it already installed!

I find the system to be quite ok, infact, its pretty damn accurate/good from the other four cruise controls i have used

http://www.autron.com.au/newweb/index1280.htm

The only single gripe i have with it. If i am cruising and i put the gearstick from D to N, the engine revs up unless i press the brakes. Apart from that, meh. With the manual coming, i dont see myself shifting while i cruise anyway.

    • Somehow Vertimass/Oak Ridge National Labs has figured out a catalyst that can convert ethanol into C9-C10 hydrocarbons in basically a single step without ending up with a bunch of ethylene or similar waste products: https://patents.google.com/patent/WO2023224867A1/en I still don't think anything like this will keep us from needing to transition to EVs regardless along with all kinds of other electrification, but things like this will go a long way towards alleviating the problem of how to electrify things like planes. Renewable diesel is seemingly an easier problem as well, Chevron is already running refineries for the stuff and the primary feedstock is tallow and other waste fats from agriculture.
    • Ok so I have sorted everything with my uniclutch and  i can offer up a bit of feedback and some things that might help others.    I found problems with factory damper line. Weird shit and had trouble with peddle adjustment    I used this https://au.gktech.com/products/r33-gts-t-skyline-braided-clutch-line?_pos=2&_sid=22b01b9b9&_ss=r Also when adjusting peddle leave a bit of play. You can get into a over stroke condition easy.. Make sure you can push the slave forward after adjusting to confirm fluid can return to master then you will need to pump it up heaps…..not sure why but that’s how it is.    last thing the splined adapter is machined perfectly. If your input shaft is old like mine was I would put a bit of valve grinding paste on it and stroke it like a 15 year old. Just to give it a tad more clearance and to better match it to the spline.    reason is on a near flat shift I have had situation where the peddle returns a millisecond after you lift from the clutch. No slip or anything but I reckon this is due to tolerance on the spline being way tighter than stock clutch and binding for a sec. I think this will go away but also my spline was old. Box is old so I guess I should have checked better. It’s a super neat fit.    it feels light as and holds awesome without any noise

    • Was that Australia Delivered Duncan? Does it have siren etc?   I used to have remote start on an old 32 two decades ago, it was a cool feature. I used to wake up early in winter for work. Start it and by the time i was out the door a few minutes later the engine was warmed up and the heaters had the car toasty. It was great.    I don’t mine the ambience lighting.  I drive a western star and it has footwell lights and ambient lighting and it’s great! From the pics of seen of them installed in a skyline I think it’s a nice touch
