hi i rooted the torque converter in my auto box in my 32 the other day and decided that it was time for a manual, so i brought a half cut. i also got given 6 liters of hot house green auto paint and four litres of clear. then i got to thinking, i have an old merc 280sl 1967 model down in the shed and then it struck me PROJECT!!!!. So im going to put the spare rb20 in the merc with the auto box and a new torque converter then paint it hot house green. if anyone has any sujjestions ideas or comments on the convertion painting or anything related (like you think its a gay idea and i should find something better to do with my time) your posts would be much apreciated.

Hey fReak32,what sort of literage of paint is required to paint the whole car?

What kind of paint is it,and what kind of gun do you use for the job.:D

I am trying to collect some information of painting because i am going to try my hand at it.

It would be a good conversion with the paint to match.Ive seen an old merc with a 13b turbo rotary engine in it.Yours will be that much more different. You could even get an article going on here or in a magazine at the completion as being ''probably'' the first RB20det merc in the country if not the world. you should be able to paint a car with about five ltrs. i use acrylic laquer as its much more forgiving than 2 pack, with acrylic you will need the paint and about the same again of clear gloss then you need primer surfacer. i use a scorpion gravityfed gun and i have used cheap guns before and not been able to tell any diference, although i am only a hobbiest painter, not a pro.

Its school holidays, obviously, so ignore the above.

Go easy mate, it was a joke! Steele and I are friends he really just wanted a reply to his thread. :D

I guess the reason he chose the RB20DET is because he has a spare one laying around, the paint was free.. Should turn out to be a cheap conversion in the end!

Sounds good.

def post pics! the engine conversion will be awesom. No need for rb25 or 30, compare the power of the rb20 to the stock 2.8 and you'll see the rb will be great.

the ol pagoda roof 280 6cyl makes ~170hp compared to the ~215hp RB20det (not to mention easy mods from exhaust etc). The merc weighs not much more than a 32 skyline also.

not sure about the hot house green tho! get the engine in it and running before you go painting it green!
