I'm in ACT, looking at R33's, preferably series 2 (I want ABS and preferably at least one air bag).

If you go to to drive.com.au and put in nissan/skyline/sydney and look at the results, there are many cars on offer from a dealer called Japlink.com.au (you have to pess the "show dealer info" on the bottom right to see them. They are typically 96 onwards, near original condition, between 50-90 thou kms on the clock and range in price from 18-24K.

Now my question is: I've heard of odometers being wound back. Been talking to a friend and he reckons the more recent imports (eg 96 on) are more likely to have been wound back than ones from 95 and earlier.

Considering that the NEWEST R33 Skyline I can find from a dealer in Canberra is a 96, done 123 thou kms (not sure about the options), and is going for 23K... what does that mean? I'm probably gonna go look at the latter this weekend, but there's no way in hell I'd pay that much.. unless it's FULL optioned, i'm talking the LOT, and in great condition.. but I doubt it, because a lot of them in Canberra are not only more expensive than Sydney, but less features, more kms and older cars.

It's not even: "this 96 R33 in Sydney with X features and Y kms costs 19K in Sydney and 25K in Canberra",

its more like: "this 96 R33 in Sydney with X features and Y kms costs 19K in Sydney and a 94 R33 in Canberra with X-4 number of features and Y+40 thou kms costs 25K."

What GIVES? Are all the Sydney ones wound back? I'd find it hard to believe they all are? They all look like good condition from the photos I can see online. Or are Canberra dealers all charging way too much?

And just in case these Japlink cars are for real, has anyone had experience with them? I know ppl don't like paying out shops etc on here, so if you've had good experience, say so, and if bad, just say "I've dealt with them ..." or something equally as obvious, so I get the point. No details needed! Surely that's acceptable to everyone's morals/standpoint. I'd like to know as I'm gonna make the trip to go look and don't want to waste time at places that are renowned as dodgy.

Hope to sort out my confusion... thanks in advance.

I mean hell, I live 10 minutes drive from work (Belconnen to Civic for those who know Canberra) and I do buggerall on the weekends and I travelled 15 thou kms last year. Some of these cars at dealers in Sydney supposedly did 55000 / 9 = 6111kms a year... I know Japan is a small place but.... as if. Pls tell me if I'm wrong.

Dude, 95% of all imported skylines are wound back in Japan.

Ignore the km's completely.  Look for wear on the steering wheel, drivers seat, handbrake, floor mat etc.

As he said. Ignore kms, no matter what year it is, they are all wound back

Yeah just ignore them. But sometimes its hard to tell. My car has 140,000Km on it right now (96 R33 Sereis 2). I do believe that this does seem genuine, but who knows. Also my steering wheel has practically no wear on it, maybe just a little scratch.

Yep all wound back. The one you saw in Canberra has probably been in Australia for a while so it has some genuine klm on it as well :D

I got mine with 44,000klm and sold it 4 years later with about 110,000klm. And had exactly the same problem, people quite reightly expect to be able to trust the klm and did not want to pay for what seemed to be high klm compared to the rest of the market

as ive recently learnt, most of the 1's with low kms (ie 33,000kms on a series 2 R33) with log books, is probably genuine, but probably because it was sitting in the shop after an accident waiting to be repaired for ages!

    • Seemed to be good when Jeff owned it but they did a shit job on my car, probably worth a think before spending 10's of thousands of dollars where they might be cutting corners
    • Starting with issues 1 - 5, we have already run into a problem...!  Issue #4 contained 2x front brake calipers, instead of 1 caliper and 1x steering knuckle. Will have to call DeAgostini on Monday to sort it out. Anyway here's some photos.  Issue #1 is the front bumper, headlights and number plate. Issue #2 is the front wheel (with "We produced with spartan air." text on the centre cap!) and tyre, the front lip spoiler and cylinder head cover with ignition coils under the centre cover... which will never be seen again. Issue #3 is the bonnet and cylinder head. Issue #4 is the front strut, brake disc (with laser etched metal discs) and brake caliper. I stopped here because of the issue with the missing steering knuckle.  Next update will be #5 - #10 in a few weeks.
    • DeAgostini is one of a few companies that release quite large (the largest commonly available size actually) 1/8 scale models in a series of weekly issues over 100 - 110 instalments.  They release different models for different markets and DeAgostini Japan have release the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo last month. I've made two of these 1/8 scale sized cars (one an R35 GT-R from 2012 - 2014, the other I'm just about halfway through, a BNR34 Skyline GT-R from the 2Fast 2Furious movie) so when this R32 was announced there was no way I could ignore it as it's my favourite out of all Nissans.  Each issue costs around $20 so it costs about $2.2K when completed. I suppose it is very expensive for what it is, but the quality and details are really very good, and there are many "gimmicks" like fully functioning exterior and interior lights operated with a remote control, working steering, all doors/bonnet/boot/fuel lid open and close, the side mirrors fold in and it even has a speaker for the engine revving sounds when you turn the lights on.  Each issue comes with a magazine that tells the story of the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo from the first design stages of the BNR32 to Group A homologation and the various racing version that were run in the Japanese Group A and JGTC, and Australian Group A.  So I plan to update the build in this thread 5 issues at a time.  https://deagostini.jp/r32/?srsltid=AfmBOooKjxDc4EUK2rmXqMBPgyHfFJ24s4oEPJBNpnF-lFlsRoW0PE6P
