My mates r33 doesn't have one

Your car is more than likely equipped with a Series 1 motor. Your motor has the ignitor bolted on top of the coil pack cover and connects to the coil pack look.

You mates car has the Series 2 motor in which the ignitor is inbuilt in the ECU and doesn't run an ignitor on top of the engine.

Series 2 and Series 1 ECU ignition is the same, the ignitor is built into the coils on a series 2 not the ECU.
