mine had a use by date of 1997 as well. Worked perfectly fine in 2002. Unfortunately my friend (who I gave it to as I had no use for it) was driving down a road with it lit, and in a moment of brilliance decided to throw it, execept it somehow bounced on the edge of the window and landed under his seat, smoking the entire car out, and giving his carpet a nice pink hue that took hours to get out.

I believe they are compulsory in Jap cars in case they break down on a bullet train track. Crack a flare and so it gives time for the train to slow down. The speed they go, they need a bit of time...

or if it's not breaking down on a track, it might be if you see the bullet train track is obstructed, you need to light your flare...

i think that's why jap cars have to have them...

my brackets are removed and placed in the glove box..I kept wondering what the heck that was...lol...good thing I read this forum...

aww man I should get those flares as well...do they sell flares in army surpluss stores here? ...huum
