Hey all

Im just wondering if anyone here has installed an aftermarket oil pressue gauge to a GTR and if so how easy is it? (like is there an aftermarket gauge with sender that fits in the existing spot on the engine) I ask because my oil pressue has been random lately. in the mornings it is fine normal oil pressue at start up but after that its random i could drive all over canberra and it would be fine, turn the car off turn it back on and it will sit at 0 and sometimes creep just above, then sometimes it will be at zero for half the trip and then bounce back to normal, then i stop at the lights and it drops to 0 the red light never comes on. so im guessing it is the sender with this type of behavour, i want to see if there is something better than forking out 200+ for a new nissan sender.

any help would be great.

clean up the old one it maybe a bad connection somewhere. The install part is not that hard (have not installed on a nissan but there all pretty much the same) speak to the guys at a performace shop or autobarn or even auto pro.

Get someone to check it out NOW. You could be on your way to doing the big end and getting an expensive engine rebuild.

I found out too late as it did not play up on me. Apparently b4 I bought mine the previous owner thought he had a dicky gauge or connection.

It was indicating a problem, prolly the oil pump and now - well we know what happend to mine ;(

Thats the massive problem with R32 GTR's, theyre literally a time bomb waiting to go off until you inspect and/or replace the oil pump.

It could just be a dud gauge, it could be signs the oil pump is starting to wear. Best bet is to install a mechanic oil gauge and check it out. If the pressure is low/fluctuating with the new mechanical gauge, time to pull that engine out and get it replaced.

I'll echo the comments below, especially if its an early model GTR...

Yeah im worried about it i can only hope its something simple and if its not then i hope no damage has been done. its always had some form of pressure cause the little red light has never come on, which is the one this that is aparently not faulty with the whole oil setup on these cars.

I have it booked in for wedsday next week to have everything checked out.

Does the engine actually have to come out to replace the oil pump?

Well nothing really.

They changed the oil just in case but it made no difference. and it would have taken 3 hours to fix a machanical one and that was too long for it only going in there to check.

My machanic made me feel a little better because he has build one of these up for his boat and is having the same issue. the only thing is his engine is brand new we are talking the only old component is the block everything else is aftermarket and brand new and he has the same oil pressue as mine he said it looked like the stock gauge was correct basically i was told as long as the read light doesnt not come on at idle the engine will be fine. i forgot what it is switched at its like if it drops to below 10psi oil pressure or something the light will come on. and since the stock gauge isnt in psi 15psi looks like 0 anyway. so hopefully it is all good the pressue has been showing better recently with the different oil in it. Basically i was told it should be fine.

This sounds like the classic Nissan problem of crappy oil pressure senders. I have 3 Nissans 300zxtt,patroland r33GTR. The same problem on the first 2 none yet for the GTR. If the guage fluctuations are random then I would look at the sender. If it was mechanical eg the pump it is unlikely to be random but rather consistantly low at low rpm or low pressure at high rpm. I have used VDO senders in the Z and it worked fine. Try a new sender before you go off and hang yourself over the cost of an engine rebuild. Part of the 32 problem is a small diameter oil pump drive on the crank. Problem was solved with the 33's. Good luck.
