Just came back from the RTA...Ok so heres my story. My Nissan Stagea, currently in Japan, but will be here start of December or thereabouts....

So heres me getting all excited, also being egged on by my folks....

"We want to get you some number plates, what would you like? "

So in the end, I decide to get TUF-25L Silver/Black....

Right, so the letter from the RTA arrives in my mailbox to go and pick up the plates...

"Hello"

"Hi, Im here to pick up some number plates"

"Do you have your letter..?"

"Yes"

"Will you be registering them with your car today?"

"Ummm...no, the car is in Japan, but will be here about December"

"Oh ok, I'm sorry to tell you that we cannot issue you with the plates untill the car is ready to be registered...Please note, that if the plates are not picked up within a month, they will be destroyed..."

" :O You have got to be kidding right?"

"No, I'm sorry sir, but those are the rules, you can opt to pay $140 dollers for us to hold the plates untill you need them, for up to 12 monthes..."

:P

So, long story short, I payed the damn $140 so they can hold my plates 2 Monthes! Bloody rediculous..... :D I hate the RTA

*end rant*

Anyone else hate the RTA?

Um actually you`ll find that when you go pick up your plates to register it they will deduct the left over amount from your rego fees. So your not really paying $140 for 2 months.

unless the rules have changed of that $140 only $20 is for one years storage fee, the rest is just the annual fee on the plates you would have had to pay anyway. But yes amongst other things....they do suck

cause they are charging stupid amounts of money for plates now and also charging annual fees for premium plates when you didnt have to before.

I think the RTA is starting to go too far with things like this. firstly the point system has been completely screwed. you can't flick a booger out your window without losing half your licence. licence plate costs have gone through the roof with this stupid 'per year' fee for them, and rego costs general are way too high compared to the rest of the country. They're some of the reasons i'm changing over to ACT rego next year, everything is cheaper (except rego)

hey, if i transfer personalised plates between family members do i cop the 100annual fee ? i've done a transfer once this yr, but i've yet to receive an invoice asking for 100 dollars and RTA didnt mention anything about it. hrmmm, im gonna do another transfer next yr and hopefully i dont need to pay anything.

can any1 confirm this ?

It's actually fitty to hold the plates and ninety for the personal bit...nevertheless...RTA blows

That's right - 90 for the plates and 50 to hold them until you get your car. I wasn't about to pay them $50 for the "privilege" of holding my plates, so I chucked them on the car I'm driving at the moment, which is soon to be handed to my sister, meaning I won't have to pay to transfer onto my new car...

Here's the link to the RTA mention of fees, etc.

Cheers,

Nick T.
