Now, personally, when i purchase a new performance part for any car, that is not really needed to keep the car running, or not even a maintanance thing, i think, i know this is a waste of money. But, im buying it, and putting it on anyways.

When you look at it in the perspective of spending big $$$ on a car, there is never any way in hell that your going to get it back, hardly any of it infact.

But as an actual car enthusiast and not a hoon, i get pleasure from even just cruising around happily in my car, knowing that it has the power there if i want it. I would actually prefer a nice cruise on a nice night to going out to a party or a club.

And for that reason, i will always spend $$$ on any of the cars i get. Unless its purely for the family, and when that does happen, i see myself with a hobby car in the garage happily tinkering away with it, hopefully with a mate alongside.

In the long run, i know i would be better off not spending money on cars.

But as i say to people, i dont do it for the investment, i do it because its something i enjoy doing. My goal for my r33 aint a big one, get a decent power figure, get it running into the 12's and hopefully get my cams license and race it around the track.

And to all those people who just dont understand me spending money on my car ... You go buy those stamps that will still be worth 50 cents in ten years time, go you !!!

I dont see it as a waste, until when it comes time to sell it lol

Still, by that time it would have given me years of driving pleasure, and I'm much more satisfied driving a car that I actually want to drive.

I reckon its fine, as long as you're not struggling to pay for the mortgage or because of the car.

I also think you have to put the base car into consideration when spending money on it, like for example I always cringe when I $500 geminis with $2000 rims

sometimes those $500 gemmies that have massive rims have 13bt's sitting in the engine bays also, seen a couple around ... although yeah.

That can come down to taste tho.

If some one likes a gemmy, good luck to them i say.

but yes the reselling thing mite get you down ... but as you said, the driving pleasure you get out of the car, and the fact that you dont find driving a chore, u find it more fun (minus peak hour traffic) then its all worthwhile !!!

it comes down as a hobby, an expensive one at that, lol ...

but everyone spends their money differently

yup, agreed. it's pretty depressing to see people like david lee spend so much money on the car and have to compromise on the sell price when the time comes.

i spent a long time searching for my car because i planned to be in it for the long run. that's how i plan on avoiding the big loss. got me an original car - and when i modify to go fast i'll be keeping all the stock parts i take off.

i was the only stocker at vic show n shine :)

I was going to say its only wise to pour all your money into a car as long as you dont have any debts hanging over you, but realised that in saying that, i would be a hyprocrite. I'm a struggling student, who finds it hard to buy a lunch even, as most of the money goes into the car.

Okay here's my story........

I am 19 (20 on the 25th), a third year apprentice, I have a stockish 95 Skyline gts-t. I have $1500 in my bank account right now. I have a car I am getting ready to sell for $4000. My brother also owes me $2500 that I will be getting back soon because he's selling his kick-ass stereo system. I could take this, but the RB25 is enough music for me.

That makes a running total of $8000 that I pretty much have available to me. In 4 weeks I will be turning 4th year, meaning an extra couple of hundred in my pay.

I have had 4 weeks off in 3 years, and didn't really have a break from school. I worked it out today that I have $4500 in holiday pay, so whatever I don't use when I finish in November next year will be paid out to me. Now with that 8k+, it could be quite easy for me to pay a fair bit off the car or look into getting a house, but I want to travel around with my work so I won't be doing that. In January I am taking 3 or 4 weeks off, heading up to Broome for a holiday, and my car is going into a workshop for around 5k worth of work, regardless of if I sell my car or not, which shows you how well I can save money. BTW, working on weekends makes most of this possible. :)

Some will see this as a waste, but I don't because with my situation & plan I am fine with this. The way I can see it is if you can't afford it don't do it. I have never been in debt, and I hope I am never under financial pressure.

My long term plan/goal/dream is to finish my apprenticeship, either stay in Perth or head east for about a year, then I am off overseas for as long as possible. Wherever my car can come with me, I'm pretty sure Canada is okay with Skylines, that would be first choice. That is from November next year. And I think being 21, a qualified tradesman, having a car in excess of 300rwhp & still having money to play with is pretty damn good.

Damn I need a drink now after that lol

Having had my car for over a year now and taking it from stock to over 200kw was/is exciting in more ways than one. Theres the satisfaction of knowing that with the press of the pedal I can GO without worrying about it. Thens theres the great feeling that I know exactly why it is going so good, whats been done to make it go so well, and if I want I can get even more out of it.

Until recently I really didnt appreciate how great a drive these cars are, as it was my daily driver, I had become lulled to driving experience that is the skyline, but that changed when I was given a company ute (its a Nissaan), now every so often I get home and just have to take it out for drive, the sheer driving pleasure is second to none and if I can find ways to improve on it, well godamit I will. :)

i think if you love the car then spending money on it just becomes a hobby, and therefore isnt a waste. if you feel you are just "wasting" money on you skyline, silvia, stagea watever performance car you drivin round in, then maybe your drivin the wrong car. :)

it is a waste but whatever floats your boat i guess...

the problem i see is you spend money on the components, then again to get them fitted and working, then fairly regularly to upgrade or repair all the other little things that go wrong or can't cut it when you bump the power up significantly only to make the car less attractive to the majority of potential buyers when it comes time to sell. heavily modified cars only really appeal to a small segment of the population and even then a lot of tinkerers seem to prefer to start with a stock car too.

Rather than spend money on my car i would rather get another toy... like a sportsbike
