I got a new Stereo Installed yesterday, too lazy to do it myself and have only just noticed that the drivers side mirror does not fold in. There isn't even any noise coming from it when i flick the switch for it :D

Could the guy who did the install have stuffed something up, the left mirror still folds in ok, there isn't seperate fuses for each mirror is there?

anyone had a similar experience, i had a similar prob in my silvia but it still folded in and made noise

Please help

Kris

Take it back to em and say " What the F#ck is goin on with this you bunch of C#nts!!!"

Usually gets the point across. I got my stereo installed ans when I got it back the lights on my climate control didn't work. There sometimes pretty rough.

Did they fit new speakers in the door? Sounds like they simply (accidentally) pulled the connector from the switch (I'm guessing the switch is on the door). But, yeah, suggest you get them to fix it.

yup, i'd open the door and check for loose connections if u have speakers installed. When i installed my face unit no similiar problems - i don't think the connection is even on that same circuit. Otherwise check fuses - don't forget there are some fuses in the boot as well and engine bay as well.

yeah i had a similar problem ... there is a plug which connects directly from the controls ... check if that is connected ... and then check the wiring all the way through ... u should find that its probably either not plugged in properly ... unlikely if one mirror is working ... or there is a loose connection somewhere ... but i'd take it back and make them do it ... so u get your moneys worth!!

Only the head unit was installed, it cost me heaps and cause i couldn't bring the price down they offered to install it for me, so i accepted, they came to my work during the day and did it.

It's weird cause i have removed and installed the stereo three times in my car prior to getting a"professional" job done and i have never had any problems, even when pulling the door trims off etc.. all he had to do was install the headunit so i don't know whats happened. It's only one fuse for the mirrors right?

He said he did skylines in the past, anyway i will give them a call today and let you's know, by the way the headunit is wicked it plays Mp3's and WMA, well worth it!

Thanks

Kris

oh - stupid me..i remember now... pull off the gearstick surround (clips)... remove dash assembly and its on that. They prolly just forgot to reconnect the mirror plug to the switch when they pulled it out. If it still doesn't work, wiggle it a bit and see whether it works. Alternatively may need to be resoldered if they jammed it on something accidentally.

btw: yes mp3 units rock!

I have a similar problem, but in my case the passenger side doesnt fold in - drivers side does!

Unless they are seperatly fused then I am guessing its a wiring issue. When I test drove the car i noticed a funny electrical buzzing on the passenger side and i said that needs to get fixed. I picked up the car and as there was no noise I thought it was fixed. Until I tried to fold the mirrors in of course.

BTW, both of mine are electrically adjustable [up/down/left/right] but only drivers mirror folds in! I will be getting the seller to fix this.

yeah i will try this tonight, whenever i pulled my dash apart, i never took any of the connections for the mirrors, etc.. off, i guess the guy installing it did,

Thanks all for your help.

Also don't you hate it when you park your skyline out the front and the 17 inch low profile tyre of your car gets slashed for no aparrant reason whatsoever ($250 out of pocket)and all the other cars out the front don't get touched :hellpisd:

I called the car stereo place and they said it's my word against theirs basically and that it couldn't be their fault, they said bring my car in so i suggested saturday, they then go you will need to drop it off because customers can't hang around. Thats bullshit, i don't think i will ever go there again, by the way if anyone wants a hint of who it is it is a place in Balcatta off Erindale road, don't want to bag businesses. I have spent heaps there in the past 2 years and this is how they treat me!.

Anyway I pulled my dash apart, and had a look, first thing the cigarette lighter was not connected, i then had a look at the connection on the switch for the folding of the mirror. It was fine and plugged in. I followed the two wires, yellow and blue down past the fuse box and in to a small black box. Off of this box was two wires, a yellow and a red, with fuse holders (old type 5 Amp) I removed both of these and checked them, they were ok, then I Flicked the switch with the fuses out, the left mirror still folded but the little black box made a funny noise, like it was struggling. I put both fuses back and then tried it, it made it's little switching sound but was fine and again only the left mirror folded.

I jiggled the wires and tried it, it didn't make any difference, the drivers side mirror still didn't fold in. I then took off the door panel and traced where the wires go, everything looked ok (it shouldn't have been out of place cause the door was not touched). I honestly don't know why, the last thing i will try on the weekend is unscrew the actual mirror and put a multimeter on the motors connections to determine whether it is the motor burnt out or the wiring.

All the fuses throughout the car are fine as well the wiring upon visual inspection, i didn't think that it would be the switch anyway cause if it was you would think both mirror would not work. Also the Drivers side left right up and down still works.

Well i don't know it's got me but i'm determined to find it!!

Sounds like you've checked it pretty thoroughly and like u say everything seems fine.

Sometimes the switch can be dual side thing. I had a problem on my old car with one headlight not working and it was the actual switch causing one not to work - after trying everything else i ended up having to take it to an autoelectrician. So often yes, one side can go when its just a switch problem.

I'd check the mirror motor like you said.

Final step is just to take it to an autoelec and see whether they can solve the problem (they'll prolly charge $200 or so). Not cheap but if it is important for you to get it fixed, maybe worth it if u have tried everything you can think of.

Good luck to you man, but you shouldn't have to go look for it!!! They are supposed to be PROFESSIONALS, but all professionals are farken sh1t kickers!!!!!

I don't trust ANY so called professional to touch my car, unless I don't have the time, or the tools! If I were you, I would take note of how long it takes you to find the problem. Then rip a quote out of your arse, as any so called professional would, add 20% wank factor to it (again as they would), and you then know what kind of damage you should do to his business. (Smashing windows, walls, etc..) Also leave a note saying: "You should have just fixed the stuff up you made"

(But I am easily angered and don't always think straight when things p1ss me off)

I had a mechanic who is now out of business stuff my car up, then charge me for his stuff up! So I rooted his place of business by writing what I thought of his workshop with used engine oil, all over the ground outside his workshop!

An alternative approach to use, which has ALWAYS worked for my sister (she can be a real bitch), is to walk right into the shop, and say OUT LOAD AND CLEAR, for all customers to hear, exactly what happened, and ask them what they plan to do about it! If they still say it's our word against yours, and that you cant prove it, then ignore that comment, and keep repeating yourself saying the customer is always right, why would I lie about this.. this is unacceptable... I will take legal action (even if you wont, threaten them in a very demanding voice)! PERSISTENCE! Don't stop until you get what you want!!!!! The trick is to be extremely arrogant, rude, LOAD and persistent!

Why my sister even got her insurance company to buy 2 hubcaps, without her even paying excess?!?!?!?! I don't know how she did it, but she did!

Walking into the shop and yelling at them could do wonders...do it early morning when customers are in there

Hmmmm - but in this case, to be honest, it may be nothing to do with them. Often things do go wrong when u take something out. Sure it shouldn't but electricals can be touchy, move something and anybody can end up putting the final nail in a part that is on its way out. Can't always blame a place for something all the time.

But for stereo stuff, i'd spend the effort learning yourself. Not only do you learn how to pull your car apart, you also learn all sorts of stuff in case something goes wrong. Only once did i let somebody install a system in my car, and after that i just thought, **** it, you don't need to be a pro to do this stuff. For small stuff, its worth doing yourself

This sounds to me like a bad earth to the mirror relay,

The other place to look is behind the glove box there is a small computer located up there, I have found that if one un-plugs this computer quite alot of things stop working. Such as the 20kph door lock, that beep under the dash, the windows dont go up or down and the mirrors don't work (to name a few) it may be when hunting for power or whatever they chopped a wire to this computer.

i just took the door panel off, put a multimeter to the two wires that control the motor, with the ignition in the on position and got a reading when in the outward position of approx 12 volts. I switched the switch to the inward position and got a reading of approx -12 volts. I think the motor has had it, will double check this, but if it is i might as well get a whole new mirror :(

Anyone know in WA where i could find one?

Just tried the mirror on the left hand side and it didn't work, so this confirms it to be the motor in the mirror, :uh-huh: at least i know now. I'm not to sure if it was the car stereo places fault this might all be a coincidence

If this is the case then it may be the contacts in the mirror then, as power is put to the mirror the mirror folds out or in, when it gets to the end of its travel the switch contacts get opened.

Have you yet pulled the mirror apart? there is also a heater in there to melt ice tho this may of been one of those skyline options so the heater may not be on all models,

I cant see any reason why you couldnt take the mirror apart and clean the contacts as I feel it is unlikely that the mirror folding motor is burnt out.

My passanger mirror somtimes sticks open but if I give it a tap it then folds. tho before the tap the motor wasn't even trying to move.

see how ya go with it.

check the white plug that connects the wires from the door to the main body. I mean the one which the grommet runs into. You have to unscrew it. They would have put the new stereo wires through there and may have accidently wrecked another wire in the process.

sorry if this has already been suggested, i haven't read the rest of the thread....

Dude, check the resistance of the motor with your multimeter. If it's open circuit, then the motor's definitely had it. You might want to take the motor apart and have a look though if that is practical. If the coils are not burnt (again, verify with multimeter), you may be able to restore it with a little cleaning and greasing.

    • Hey was wondering if you ended up installing the R33 GTR speed sensor - I found one too and wanted to confirm it's a direct swap into the R34 6 speed?
    • After 23 years of owning a Skyline, finally had the latch go.  Followed this guide,  works like a dream again. Great Guide 👍
    • Hi all,   I’ve got the biggest lot of problems with my R33 GTS-T   It was a freshly rebuilt 25th anniversary RB25DET (plastic cas, neo cams) probably 6 years ago now   The engine was running so well but I fkd up badly and trusted someone I’d known for 10 years that was well known around Plazmaman for his welding and fab work. I added a lovely photo of some of his previous work. Not sure why my car was worked on by whoever did this shit     I’m normally someone who would never open myself up to something like this, I still can’t believe I did it. Trusting him literally fkd it all up for me. Everything has been a struggle, like it’s almost been 6 years that’s how much I’ve just on and off been trying to work it all out.    All I wanted was a car that danced down low, like full boost from around 3~3500rpm to redline, don’t really care what power it puts down (if it ever does) but I just wanted it to be quick to get on it.    He recommended the turbo to get, I picked Hypergear but he told me to get the front 4” with a T4 and 0.68 rear housing.    I was expecting all these beautiful welds, tidy fab work and paid for it to be ready to go to a tuner when I got it back.    I got a car back that was an absolute mess, I actually couldn’t believe it was my car anymore. I don’t think you could even call what he did welds, they’re disgusting.    So I stripped everything he touched off it and with every bolt I loosened it just got worse and worse.    I covered it and literally built and finished another car in the meantime but now it’s getting to the point where I really want my Skyline back.   Its a struggle because I paid him to do all this shit because I didn’t know how to and now I’ve had to try and figure it all out omg    Please excuse the bird shit horrible welds, I’ve got my show pony car and am so beyond dealing with this car I don’t even really care at this point.    If someone told me about what he did to my car I wouldn’t have believed them but it happened to me. It was unbelievable. He went missing, my car went missing, it came back missing parts, the straight af chassis rails bore the scars of being dragged up a trailer backwards, even the sandwich plate was bent. Everything was leaking and open to whatever fell into it, rounded off/ missing bolts, power steering oil and coolant everywhere, no gaskets, parts stolen off it, even managed to damage the sump pan.   Promised me he’d finish the car, knew what it meant to me, I paid him thousands and thousands just for him to trash it. He told me he was fully licensed and insured, come to find out he’d cancelled his ABN, so obviously no insurance. I had laid up insurance on the car and would’ve been covered but I was scared they would’ve written it off or because the business was no longer trading I’d still be liable.    He was supposed to:  New fully custom mild steam pipe exhaust manifold with turbo location moved from factory position to high forward mount. (I don’t know if it is a mild steam pipe, I’ve got a funny feeling the waste gate isn’t in a very good position and I don’t think the outlets off each cylinder are equal) 4” custom stainless steel dump with external gate (he re-plumbed it) Cut and shut OEM intake manifold with throttle reposition (I ended up doing the throttle reposition) Box in pod filter (left out) New 100cel catalytic converter (pretty sure it’s there but unsure if it’s 100cel) Front mount intercooler piping fabricated to suit (all smashed up and rusty holes where he was supposed to make it look standard where fmic piping passes through. I don’t even think my front bar is going to fit 🙄) Custom 5” intake pipe from pod to turbo (didn’t come with it so had to do something to make it work with the Z32 afm)   Engine: Full cylinder head service & machining  Brand new valves Precision upgraded spring kit Engine block honed New bearings  New piston rings  New ARP conrod bolt kit New ARP head studs Cometic head gasket VRS kit   ATR43SS2 ball bearing turbo 0.68 rear housing  Turbosmart 45mm external wastegate (got delivered to the fab bloke, I’ve got no idea what spring is in it, I’m assuming the one that came pre installed) Walbro 260 fuel pump  Nismo 740cc injectors (tested to 880) Spitfire coil packs GCG FMIC RB25DET manual 5 speed 4:11 rear diff   I’ve got an Apexi Power FC in it atm, I was hoping to just get it to operating temp to make sure everything was okay before towing to a tuner but it’s over-fuelling too much. I don’t think that’s going to happen so i think I’m going to get either a Link G4 or Haltech for it. What do you guys recommend? I can’t work out the power FC so just gonna give up on that one     It’s got an exhaust leak coming from somewhere I can’t see 🙄    The fuel pressure was steady but now it like drops from 40 to 20psi randomly (noticed this yesterday)    I’ll attach pics of the shit he put on my car and the engine bay now as it sits    I really just need some help, I need a tuner in Sydney I can trust, I’d like to be with the car while it’s being tuned if possible, I know it looks terrible but unfortunately I’ve just got to put up with it for now and fix the cosmetic stuff later   Do you guys think the manifolds are going to be okay? Or do I throw the exhaust manifold and try again?   I don’t even think these combinations are going to work tbh   I know everything I fitted was rated to be able to take at least 400kW but most rated higher    If you’ve gotten this far I really really appreciate it 🙏 I don’t mind if you trash me or the car, I made a rookie error and f**k I’ve paid for it. As you’ll see 🙄
    • From everything I’ve heard you’ll be waiting a long time for  the parts to arrive
    • Have you looked at the workshop manual?
