removing silicon coating off dash palastics

The coating on my dash pastics are peeling in spots and I was thinking of removing the coating and spraying the plastic in silver. has anyone had luck with it. any ideas will help me out!

tryed it and the plastic begins to melt and go white, it also doesn't remove it all...............and it does take ages! any more ideas?????

how about removing silicon on metal and fibreglass??? heat it up and use an eraser???

I us a silicon & tar remover... usualy found in the car polish section in automotive shops

how long did it take to remove it all from the plastic?

I am interested on this subject too.

I have stripped and painted the centre console (gear stick surround) but am dreading doing the rest.

The rubber coating is a pain to get off. I physically had to rub with my fingers, the stuff is like a scratchy.

I did not want to scratch the plastic underneath.

So any ideas would be great..

I have repainted my entire dash and gear stick surround. I had never done anything like that before, but one of my friends showed me what to do. If I did it anyone can.

I used Acrylic Paint Thinner to remove the existing paint/silicon on the dash. Just wiped it on with a rag left it for a few minutes and scratched it all off another rag. You can't really damage the plastic underneath easily if you do it this way.

After all plastic had been cleaned we used a plastic primer for the under coat, then normal black spray paint and a clear top coat. All looks really good, better then the old dash…

I'm going the other way and covering up the problem - with carbon fibre appliques. IMO it looks boring as stock and just looks crappier with age.
