FTO : poor man's Integra Type R

Good : handling, NA power with use of the MIVEC technology, handles very well

I reckon they are pretty cool. There are I think 3 different versions: a GR (has a 1.6L Colt engine, shite), a GPX (2L engine) and a GP Type R (with a 2L MIVEC engine, hells jeah!). I've heard they are pretty reliable. Can't say I've heard of a 4 wheel drive twin turbo version, but some people do turbo charge them.

Eh, I know heaps of people who have FTO's. I have nothing but praise for them really....just make sure you get a manual. Also, try www.ftoaustralia.com B)

Ok so you were after opinions on the FTO, put simply they look gay, got no power (even the mivec has shit all torque) which = goes nowhere and will get munched by a stock vs commo.

There also overpriced for what they are your better of getting a 32 or 33 gtst, they will rip it in every way, especially pulling the chicks B)

Mate you have got to be kidding me right? :( To some they may look gay, but to me and most others I know, they are hot as.

hmmm....lets see

GPX has 150kw and yes it only has 200nm of torque, but dude, 0-100 in 7 flat...Munched by a commo? We are talking executive and acclaims etc? Mate, if they can munch a GPX FTO, I will buy one. Based on oppinions of chicks I no, they definatly rate FTO's higher than Skylines. Because Skylines are everywhere, where as FTO's, they are a bit more rare...

Just my 2c

It's a bit of a hairdressers car.

All it needs is a convertible version. :(

Wasn't there a four-wheel drive twin turbo version? That would be the only one I would drive.

I think you're mistaking the FTO for the GTO. The GTO is a completely different car.

Mate had a Mivec one in the UK for a couple of years back in 98-00. Was in dark blue and completely standard.

As others have said. Sound awesome, they sound like they rev very highly. No head room in the back, I ended up with my eye in the high level brake light several times on the way home from nights out.

His had a double DIN head unit that could only pick up Japanese radio so CD's were all he used. 200bhp from the factory is quick enough for a N/A.

Couple of things I personally didnt like. Windows on the side are so high up you cannot rest your arm on the edge of the door and the steering wheel as you can in most cars. Huge orange indicators on the side look tacky. Lacquer on the wheels doesnt last long.

I would definately own one and nothing hair dresser like about them, thats left to the mazda range :)

A lot of the FTO's image problems are because they are front wheel drive (shock! horror!), non-turbo and they were predominantly sold as automatics. This gave it a hairdresser image. If none of these are a problem (keeping in mind manuals are around if you search hard enough) then it should keep you happy.

I like the FTO. I've come close a couple of times to buying one. For what it is (a hot looking FWD hatchback) it does a very good job.

The "poor man's Integra" is unfair. The only reason its "poor" is because its a grey import, so the car is second hand and doesn't have the OEM markup that comes with a locally delivered model. If ITRs were only available as grey imports as well, they'd probably get referred to the "boring brother of the FTO".

In Japan, the GP Version R goes toe to toe with its similarly "limited edition" rival, the Integra Type-R. The GPX does a great job against the Integra VTiR, and the GP would also have a good showing against the GSi (bear in mind that the FTO was built in the DC2 days when comparing models).

The cars handle well, for a front driver of that age. Its "setup" is similar to the DC2R (lightweight FWD coupe, revvy engine, LSD) and I believe it has won a Japan Car of the Year award.

I reckon they're ok.

I was tossing up between that and the Skyline when i bought.

Ended up getting the Skyline in the end with no regrets.

But the insurance on the FTO is HEAPS cheaper.

Go test drive one, i did.

As previously said, MIVEC is a must, then you can get the APEXi mivec controller. APEXi stuff is soooo cool

I test drove..FTO, 300zx TT, 300zx non-t (soo bad) and the Skyline R33 turbo and non-turbo.

Hmmmmm Skyliiiinnnnee (Homer sytle)

I have both a 32 GTR and MY2000 Manual Version R FTO at my disposal.

The FTO Ver R is the one that competes with the Integra Type R and IMHO whips it for looks, sound, modern interior, LSD, NO ABS, fr and rr strut braces etc......although not screwed together quite as well.

The FTO is better:

For attracting attention to those who dont know

Fuel consumption

Sound!!!

Seats

The GTR is better:

Grunt

Street cred to those who know.

Its a skyline

As a daily I prefer the FTO.

    • Haha yea it's a bit of a weird setup at the moment, just wanted to make sure I sorted out any headaches before dyno day. At the moment I've changed the exhaust manifold, turbo and downpipe, 460lph fuel pump and rising rate reg as well as the previously mentioned headstuds and gasket. The nistune was already mapped for the car as it was and drove around for a few months no worries. The plan is to run flex fuel hence the big pump, which I've wired direct to the battery through a relay to avoid voltage issues.
    • Um. Was the ECU the same as the one previously there? I know R33's needed R32 GTST ECU's or other tomfoolery to run Nistune. This is such a wild setup. Most people would plumb in the turbo then not drive the car (i.e tow it to a tuner). What's actually changed since it last ran?
    • I'm a bit stuck with this one fellas, I recently decided to undertake a turbo conversion on my GTS-4, ended up pulling the motor to replace all the seals and do an mls head gasket and arp head studs while I was at it. Everything has gone according to plan, no oil or coolant leaks, compression checked out, and decided to give it a test before I book it in for a tune As it stands right now, the turbo only has oil lines plumbed so that I don't put boost into my untuned engine, and I'm using the factory GTS-T crossover pipe with a maf and poddy as a temporary intake. The car starts with relative ease and idles amazingly, however as the title suggests it really doesn't want to rev up, runs very smooth but almost feels choked out and unresponsive to the throttle, almost like it's running lean or something? I've triple checked my vacuum lines and timing with a timing light, injectors haven't been touched as of yet to avoid flooding the engine and worked perfectly beforehand, new plugs and coilpacks, I've even unbolted the cat just to see if it spontaneously collapsed, no dice The car currently has a nistune r32 gtst ecu installed so I have no way to check for fault codes. At this point I'm a bit stumped. Is this normal behaviour for a car with a turbo bolted onto the exhaust going nowhere? I'd imagine the turbo wouldn't cause this much restriction in the exhaust without the boost going through the intake. Any ideas? If necessary I can link a video of how it responds to full throttle while in neutral.
