hey all, engine of scrutiny is a rb20det swapped into a s14 chassis.

as of late its developed a slight miss at idle and under full boost round 7.6krpm it will cut out for a second and then contiune on.

revlimiter is set at 8.5, but when it hits at 7.6 its pretty rough and doesnt like it much at all......however fuel is not a problem as its about 11.8:1 round there.

ive gapped the plugs down to .6mm now and still no change, perhaps the coils have finaly gone south?

yah i figured its proly a coil going bad but if thats the case then im just gonna convert to wasted spark.

new coils off ebizzle for 1$usd and some sparkplug leads and some creative wring and all coil woes will be relived forever.

You are dreaming if you think that's the case. Plenty of guys have thought that, most are now back to the original coil on plug set up. The rest sold the car.

A faulty coil/coils do not display all of the symptoms you are describing. Cleaned the injectors lately? Cleaned the AFM lately? Changed the plugs lately? Checked the AAC valve?

:O cheers :)

I'm one of them.

I tried running 6 bosch coils and leads after the astounding results of a mate with a CA and then an SR. He could run 1.4 plug gaps and a/f ratios deep into the 10's with no miss (and this was still utilising the stock ignitor).

I could make about 5psi on my rb25 before blowing out the spark if i eased onto the throttle, if i planted the throttle it would just break down and miss instantly. It was wired exactly the same as on my friends SR, i even went and got 2 CA ignitors thinking the internals were bigger as the pins were bigger and ran 3 channels on each, no difference.

Went back to rooted stock coils and it was 200% better, got splitfires and it didn't miss anymore.

hehe, well i was hoping that it would atleast aleviate some problems......

so far in an effort to fix the problem ive removed the maf and given it a good cleaning with contact cleaner (i run blowthru), pulled the plugs out only to find that they are still clean and plenty of life left (gapped down from .8mm to .6mm) and i havent cleaned the injectors as of late........

the aac valve i swapped out a few months ago because i thought the one on my car was faulty, turned out to be an improperly set tps.......

i did clean and lubercate the aac while it was out of the car and it does work fine, idles up when its supposed to.

im gonna guess that i should run some injector cleaner thru my car and see if that helps?

its wholey possible ive gotten some fouled gas as gas shortages (read: gouging) may have caused some stations to put in some dodgy gas in place of premium........

    • I love the undertray, especially the flappy bit for easier access for serving I'm thinking of fabing up one at work for the MX5 while I still have access to the metal shop at work with a guillotine and press brake Whilst removing the plastic undertray on the MX5 isn't to hard, I love the idea of a 2 bolt flap as opposed to removing the whole thing
    • Great thank you for that. Yeah that is the bumper and spoiler it still has i just hadn't heard of it being referred to as a aero form bumper before. Really appreciate your help.
    • A little progress; I took the opportunity of an oil change to take a sample for oil analysis, will be interesting to see how it was treated for its first 125,000klm (I know how it has been treated since ) I went with 5w40 and will see what that does for oil pressure at higher revs. Also fitted the Z1 front undertray....a little more sturdy than the plastic factory one (although I suspect it won't stop a tree stump ) Nicest thing about it really is the 2 bolt "service panel"....a gift to the oil changer compared to removing 14 bolts holding the factory tray.
    • I think a scissor lift is better/faster in most cases, but I guess it does obstruct access to the centre of the car? BTW I weighed the quick jack. 3.5 tonne model is 50kg for each side. So yes, portable, but not with one finger
    • Not a huge update because still waiting for some fittings for the intake. But I did corner weigh the car, its enough to make a GTR driver cry at 1163kg (race ready except no fuel)  Sorry about the terrible pics but I think they are readable With 70kg driver
