Heya all,

I've been toying with the idea of getting a stock rear bar (R32), and having the 'SKYLINE' part of it light up at night...

I went to a custom bodykit manufacturer, and he reckons I could use a belt sander to shave the letters off from the inside, because of the indentation on the letters. Alternatively, if that doesn't work, then I might have to sit down with a die grinder and do it all VERY carefully! If i slip up just once, it will ruin the whole thing ;)

Then I would need to put a perspex sheet behind it, and seal it so its watertight. Then just run a couple of globes from the rear lights to it, so it comes on with the lights. If I angle the lights right, it should light up the entire sheet of perspex, if you all know how perspex reacts to light :D

Kind of hard to explain what I'm getting at, but if you use your imagination, I think it will be a worthwhile mod - would also give all of these used R32 rear bars a new lease on life! :D Can put all sorts of colours through it, or even use a multi-coloured neon with colour selector in the cabin.

It's bound to set one 32 apart from another, and that's what it's all about, in an age dominated by BN kits and Vertex bars. B)

I've got a few other crazy ideas on mucking around with 32s, if anyone cares to hear 'em...

Adrian.

welcome to 2002 :P

The part that lights up is a factory option that came on R32's from certain dealers in japan. It lights up slightly blue due to the EL sheet it uses. You can pull the EL sheet out (as it usually craps itself after a few years) and replace it with surface mount style LED's.

yeah my 33's got that. lights up a bluey green color..... like so.....

and yes the cops will harass you about it, coz they did with me and thats the reason why the wire is now disconnected so it doesnt light up anymore. ;)

i couldnt see anyway of f*kin around with the lighting tho, but in the day looks good as you can acutally read it

Dammit! I thought I had thought up of something original! Oh well, I've got a few other crazy ideas for modding the 32 unlike anyone else's I've ever seen. Might have to keep them secret until I do it all... B)

Planning on pretty much doing a full-custom bodykit and interior, but I won't spoil the broth and spill the beans at the minute. You'll all just have to wait! :)

On what grounds did they harrass you about it for??  Sounds like a load of crap to me, i can't see anything that they could possibly pick on it for...

yeah I've never had any issues with mine, as when I'm driving normally it dosen't do the knight rider thing, it just acts like a regular brake repeater and all 7 characters light up. Pretty much like a high mount brake light.

On what grounds did they harrass you about it for??  Sounds like a load of crap to me, i can't see anything that they could possibly pick on it for...

Any light on the back of your car needs to be red, or it can be considered defective. The same goes for the sides which have to be orange and the front has to be white.

That said I have seen a cop defect a car for having Altezza style rear lights. The guy pleaded with the cop that there was nothing wrong with it. The cop said and I quote "I'm a police officer and I say its defective so its defective."

So really they can get you anyway they want. I guess its easier to get it cleared than take it to court, which means cops can defect just about anything thats not standard.

altezza lights are almost always illegal. thats why they say "for off road use only" when you buy them.

factory mazda 1's are obviosuly going to be fine

Ok. I was told different. Like I said I had always thought that as long as you had red on back etc. you were fine. Especially since Altezza lights do exactly the same thing as normal lights.

altezza lights are defective if they don't have red reflectors on them. Most ricer opt not to get reflectors as they're not JDM tyte enough with em on.

I guess my rear "SKYLINE" lights up red with the brakes, so that's why I don't get hassled about it.

yeah and mine lights up like a bluey green color like in the pic.

the reason was, coz its an "aftermarket lighting feature" pretty much using the same grounds to harrass you the same way as if you had underbody neons. thats the reason i got, and yes i think its a load of shit, and am thinking i should just hook it back up again and not care, coz i didnt get fined, just asked "nicely" to have it disconnected.

and dezz yeah i will say that if i get asked about it again when i hook it back up :(:)

    • A locally delivered Infiniti have remote start installed but don't come with the remote start key. You need a new remote start key and they just need it programed. And this is different to making/programing a new key that just starts the car.
    • Cheers, and cheers for sharing so much of the build and also sharing the glimpse of what turns out to bring a lot of us poor decision makers together haha.  I do recommend learning more about how to manage it, if not considering getting a  formal diagnosis.  The discussion with the psychiatrist I got my diagnosis through was quite eye opening, things I'd not even considered to be ADHD related and hadn't mentioned were things she asked about out of the blue and were common themes with people with my flavour of ADHD.   It's not a label for people who are hyperactive and ill-attentive, there's more to it than that and some of it can be much more challenging or damaging - though there are of course two sides to the thing, and a lot of the stuff we have to go through and work on to live with it make us effectively "better" at other things as well. Aside from the fact that there is some argument I could have a bit of ASD seasoning in there (came up during the diagnosis, and neurodiverse things seem to not stay as a cookie cut) I suspect you need to learn more about ADHD if you are puzzled about how hyperfocus could possibly apply.  I *do* personally use "superpower" with quotes deliberately, but it's 100% an ADHD thing due to the exact reason that lack of focus is also an ADHD thing... Loosely speaking the inattentive side of ADHD isn't the inability to focus, it's the inability to control where the focus goes.  Not being able to sleep because brain is more interested in thinking about a stupid thing I said to a girl I liked 30 years ago, not being able to focus on work because my brain is more keen on putting together the torque management strategy we're going to try out with a drag car next weekend, not being able to focus on a conversation with someone I WANT to listen to and respect because there is a flickering light in my peripheral vision.    If I could just stop work and build the torque management setup right there and then I'd not hear anything else until it was done.
    • Maybe you should do some more reading.  Google positive effects of ADHD and you'll get your answers.  One of my personal downsides of ADHD has been talking before I think.   Maybe you have it too?
    • Excuse me for butting in....but which part of ADHD can be considered a superpower? I would have though it far more likely that some ASD comorbidity is more likely to be contributing to an ability to hyperfocus on something. ADHD being aimed somewhat in the other direction. My shed looks like your shed. My whiteboard list of unfinished projects has entries going back 15 years. I know what you're talking about - I just struggle to connect ADHD to the results being discussed.
    • Thanks for reaching out!  It's a blessing and a curse at the same time.  I'm undiagnosed but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it in me... I have more half started projects laying around my house, shed, garden, etc taking up space and money, destroying aesthetics than if I added up all of my mates projects together. But, ADHD gives me the ability to hyper focus on things that no mere mortal could even  comprehend.  A recent pool build is an example of that....  I dont know anyone else that would be dumb enough and focused enough to take on then complete something of that magnitude. I call ADHD a superpower but it can equally be completely destructive if not controlled and focusedon the right places. Addiction is a major concern to ADHD people and thankfully my addictions have been no worse than projects, XBOX, chocolate and being an arsehole! It's often hereditary and my 13 year old son is currently learning how to drive it at the moment. Keep lurking! If i can finally finish this bloody thing at some point it will be a win for all of us ADHD'ers! 🤪
