Shaft Play

i have just bought a rb25 turbo for my maxima it has a little shaft play, what are the disadventages of having shaft play and why..?

all turbos have a little shaft play regardless of age

its perfectly normal as the cartridge has no oil in there.

you seem to know alot, im gettin an intercooler fitted i just dont know what size i want. its 2L 6 cyl and it now has an rb25 turbo on it.. what do you think would be best for my car

is that jus the intercooler, i wont need piping it will have to be customized, its an import ill never find pipin for it.. where is the easiest place to get it from

the for sale section on the forums mate is a great place to start looking.

its highly active so checking each day for 2 weeks usually does pretty well

and yeah, thats only the core price, no piping unless your lucky.

There are lots of other coolers in the FS section also that might grab your eye

All turbos will have a tiny bit of up/down shaft play, but they shouldn't have any forwards/backwards movement (viewed from front). Well, technically they do on all axes, but as soon as you can feel the forwards/backwards movement with your hands, it's reached a point where it's starting to wear out and will probably need replacing or rebuilding soon.

all the plain bearing turbo's i have used have all had fair movement in them.

the rb20, rb25 and vg30 ball bearing turbo's i have used have what i would call next to no movement in them at all, and they have all run flawlessly.

from saying the above if i got any of the above turbos and they had clear movement in them i would be weary of condition.

the ball bearing turbo's spin so smoothly and easy, like silk, whilst the plain bearing turbo's are not as smooth, and not as easy to spin, when compared to their ball bearing counterparts.

but all the above is only from my personal observations.
