A mate of mine has a GTIR with an apexi safc2 fitted the knock reading on it keeps going up and down from 6 up to 12

does anyone know a far bit about these and what this actually means??

as in it always goes to either 6 or 12 and back and forth it occasioanlly it reads values like those? are you sure its wired to the correct wire? has it ever worked? the knock sensor is merely a microphone measuring a frequency inside the engine, when it picks up a certain frequency (that is most likely a knock) it measure it as a knock level on the knock sensor.

its not guaranteed to be a true "knock" as its only a microphone listening for a certain frequency

Yeah on alot of cars I've seen, the knock can actually register a reading at idle. Its nothing. Real knock on the SAFC is when you start to get values well over 50. You might just need to recalibrate the knock base reading...
