Ok after replacing the battery for the second time in the two years ive owned the line.....im just wondering if there is any places I can check or look for that would drain the batteries so quickly.

I do not have a sound system so no amp etc.....and I just got your basic alarm system with immobiliser and motion sensors.

Also what is the recommended voltage/size of battery for skylines ?

Finally last question is...can the batter voltage affect the car in any way ?

I think maybe im just being paranoid but the car doesnt seem to "start" as easily compared to the previous battery.

any help would be appreciated..

thanks guys..

hey thomas,

was the alarm installed when you bought the car??

i have a problem with my battery and the alarm is the cause...

goes dead in 2 days if the car isnt started

i got it tested at a normal auto electrician (my dads work)

found the prob in 10mins

I have the same problem

Standard Battery started wearing down quickly got down to only lasting 24hrs without the car being started. then bought a new big one which i left for 9 days when i flew home last hols and it went flat after 8 days..bit worried this new one will wear out quickly too.

I have a Viper alarm not sure if the really bright LED would drain the battery or not...its only an LED so i wouldnt expect it to be drawing much.

The alternator is fine and it charges to full capacity when im driving...i have an amp and sub which might not help...

any ideas how i can fix the prob?

I cant listen to the stereo without the battery draining and i noticed the driving lights such the power too....

Not sure if it is related but i get noise and interference through the speakers in tune with the revs (e.g. high pitch whine that gets higher as the revs increase) bloody annoying and only really noticable when the lights are on e.g. at night i have to listen to the stereo bloody loud or not on at all...

Would a capacitor help to smooth out the voltage into my amp? hence reduce the whine?

Sorry about the essay...having lots of probs with the car....

having a lot of problems on my GTT as well at the moment regarding the battery... it could be alternator, but car has only done 40000 kms so i doubt it. Grounded the wire from battry to chasis/coilover bolt. Still problems, the battery simply does not charge and if i dont tstart the car up the first time, it will not start up afterwards

The alarm drains a surprising large amount of power.. it's not the LED - it's the constant signal it's emitting to all the sensors, sonic detectors.. everything that it's monitoring..

Moving past that though - Most batteries will die after a couple of weeks without the car being started, it might just lose to much charge to crank over the engine. Also it's not about the voltage so much as cranking amps is what is required to get the engine kicking over..

Cheers mate

Pretty sure its not the boot light though, u can see the light through the little vents in the rear parcel shelf when its on and i dont see that when the boot is closed.

I have to leave my car for a couple of weeks when i go on hols to qld, i dunno how to stop the battery from draining and setting the alarm off, the gf's neighbours were pretty pissed last time i went away and the alarm went off...

Weird that you all say that... Im still using a fairly small battery in my car. Running 2 amps, and a flashpoint alarm. The alarm has 3 immobilisers plus the little key thing in the dash where u can turn it on and off without using the remote. I'd say that uses a bit more power than ur standard alarms. Also have my gauges hooked up, not sure if they use power to keep memory settings etc.

I've had my battery for over a year and never had any probs. I went away to NZ for 11 days, came back and cranked over no sweat. In theory the amp shouldnt use any real power till your deck sends it the signal. Maybe i got a magic battery?

In regards to the interference as the revs go up, its to do with your earthing. Check your earthing on your car, maybe move it to a different spot and you'll be sweet. The series 2 r33 has a nice little bit of metal down behind the ash tray behind where ur deck would sit with a hole through it . Perfect for earthing with a screw and a nut...

    • That is correct. I'm using a modified ABS ring and a ZF speed sensor on my rear diff for speed input. I'm running a Haltech ecu.
    • Been busy with the newborn. We originally thought we were going to go for a third, but we're good with two lol. He's starting to actually sleep now so I've had some energy to work on the car. It's been parked away in the garage since late November due to winter.  I went ahead and redid all my head oil drains. I originally had my front and rear head drain going into the same pipe but have since split them up. I also added an Ethanol content sensor to get ready to run E85 this summer. Tossed it on my return line. Sensor sits nicely under my intake manifold.    I also have a lot of parts that came in for my rear end. I'll be swapping over to a 3.3 final drive and doing the GK teck anti squat mod. While the rear subframe is off, I'll also change every bushing. We're planning on buying another house soon with the condition that I get at a minimum a 2 door garage, so I'll wait to have more room for this. Now onto the strange things that recently happened... After changing the lower rad hose (It had been sitting in my cabinet for well over a year and was the last hose I had to replace), I let the car idle in the garage to bleed my coolant. After running for a few minutes, it started missing. Got much worst within a minute or two and then stalled and would not restart. My crank sensor decided to crap itself. No damage, no explanation, just died. I went ahead and replaced it with another ZF sensor but the heavier duty stainless model with a shield. Tossed that in and started right up. Has anyone else seen this? I hate when things fail without cause. Luckily this was a blessing in disguise... This lead me to recheck my timing. It seems I may have had a beer or two the last time I had set my TDC angle as I was off exactly 5 degrees... I miscounted a line haha. I was running 5 degrees less then commanded. It's a little embarrassing but helps explain why my dyno operator seemed to think I should be making more then 478rwkws.

    • Nah no bearings, just slip fit.  Would be a reasonably challenging but not impossible job to modify it to run bearings but I'm hoping that's not necessary as I may have well built one myself if I end up spending hours modifying it!
    • Brumbys with good shells are bloody expensive, I've looked at 2 "cheaper" cars, and walked away from both,  plus after some research spare parts are fairly sparce I'm starting to think that I missed the boat on finding a clean one that is straight (ish) and without alot rust I'm starting to think about a old Hilux as panels and other parts are much more available as they sold tens of thousands of them I use to be indecisive but now I'm not sure
