G'day, i was just wondering about crane cams hi-6 CDI ignition. I have an rb25/30 with an autronic, gt3540 (1.06) and i dont want to use the standard coils because of the problems they have. I am aiming for 350-400rwkw. What i am wondering is how the crane cams ignition is setup because it only has one coil when there were 6 originally? Anyone used this?

You really need to get a multi channel to suit coil on plug ignition as your ecu is outputting the ignition triggers rather than a single coil with distributor type ignition.

Autrtonic have a multi channel CDI that can be used with external coils as well as MSD and Motec and the HKS twin power units.

I have the Autronics SMC runnning in my car atm.

I am just in the process of purchasing a CDI unit after some good advice.

I'm going for the Autronic 500R CDI unit which are a top of the line product but the HKS item is not a bad item as well.

You can use your standard coils but they were not design for CDI setup and can overheat very quickly.

Many people purchase the Mercury Outboard Coils, MSD, M&W, Bosch coils as they are cheap and complatible with CDI setup.

If you have an Autronics ECU, I recommend going with the Autronics 500R CDI unit.

I don't know about this Crane product but I know alot of people have big problems when trying to setup a CDI setup so going the proven way works for me.

Thanks for the info. Have you got any idea on the costs of these coils? particularly the mercury ones and of the 500r CDI itself?

Got a price on the Autronics 500R CDI $888.80 which has GST included plus $15.00 for delivery.

The Mercury Units are $35.00 each but priced from the US

Got prices for the Autronics CDI from a few different placed but the price above was the best - placing the order tomorrow.

Hi mate-I'm running a Crane Hi-6 and PS-92 coil on my 1FZ-FE with GT42. I'm also using an Autronic SMC. I've had absolutely no dramas with the system, and am running 390rwkw at the moment.

The problem I can see is the fact you are running multi coil. The unit I have is only suitable for an electronic dizzy configuration. I suspect you will be limited to a multicoil set-up.

Cheers
