Tyre Size For Stock Rims?

hi guys , i have enquired a few tyre centers and have received some different answers between all of them. My question was , i have a 16*6.5 JJ 40 rims, basicaly the standard gtst rims, i was wondering if i could fit a width of 225 instead of a 205 tyres on it and what are the lowest profile i can go, 50 or 45. Some said i can , some said i cant. any suggestions ?

I have 225/50/16 B'Stone Potenza GIII's on my car, but they do hang noticably over the rims, the additional sidewall flex probably isn't ideal but i'm happy with the setup thus far.
