I got my hands on a set of HKS cam gear, just wondering how to install them??

By the way this is for an RB25det series II R33

I took off the cover but the gear on the left has a metal cover on top of it, while trying to take off the the cover I found that there is a spring underneath, so i just put back together.

So if anyone has done this before it'll be great if you can give some hints. or is best if I get a mechanic to install them??

Personally I wouldn't do this yourself, you will most likely stuff it up and your timing will be way out. If you have a set then remember that by putting the cam gear on the inlet cam you will loose your NVCS(variable cam timing). This is not a huge issue if you are doing cams at the same time, but I wouldn't bother if you leaving factory cams in.

I would suggest that you simply do the exhaust cam gear, get it done on a dyno, you should get an extra 5kW out with this alone.

The exhaust cam gear is the one with the CAS(crank angle sensor), should be on the right as you look at the engine. If you read the info on all aftermarket cam gears it says that you will loose the NVCS. I think that they are supposed to be used in conjunction with cams, and when you have more agressive cams then you don't want the NVCS.

You can change the cams yourself IF you know what you're doing but I do not recommend tuning them yourself. If you change the timing too much you might easily end up with a blown engine. Tuning of cam gears should only be done on a dyno..

And yeh IN and EX cam gears for HKS are identical and they're also the same as the RB26 cams.

Yeah, just do the exhaust gear. The car will run like a dog if you take the VCT off and keep the factory cam.

You can give me the other HKS cam gear if you want :spank::)

The general consesus on the RB25DET with factory turbo blah blah blah, is to run 4 degrees (crank) retard on the exhaust cam. But it could vary from car to car depending on your mods I suppose.

Optimum is around 4 deg retard for the exhaust cam, if your after top-end power. Remember that top-end isn't every thing, a good tuner can give you a fatter power curve and a bit more top-end, the wider the power curve the more usable power you have.

I agree...

Go the exhaust side only....

HKS cam gears when tuned properly can give an awsome power curve... Its all about the felling of puttin g the foot down and having a 1 second lag before instant power and then all the way to 8000rpm then a quick stab of the clutch and select 2nd and bang your away... Yeah baby... (I got wet pants now)

If your after cam gears then HKS ones retail at around $250-$270. There are also a number of other manufactures who have them available, such as Toda and OS Giken, some a little cheaper, others more expensive. They can also be bought through Nengun.

For most people, unless you doing cams, then the exhaust cam is fine, and when tuned properly can give noticable gains in power and torque. I believe that the RB26 and RB25 cam gears are identical.

well, i'll be doing only the exhaust cam gear so i'll have one left over so if anyone wants to buy one as the exhaust gear and inlet gear are exactly the same drop me a pm. also the gears are identical for the rb25, rb26 and from memory rb20

    • They see me rollin' they hatin'....... Took me most of the day to make the necessary mods to the mounts to make them fit the car.  Fortunately I was able to just use the mounts that came with the rotisserie. The rear ones are really secure, the front I feel i might reinforce a bit more as it doesn't seem like enough attachment to the vehicle. I'm sure it's fine but better to be safe than (extremely...) sorry.  I drilled and tapped thread into additional M12 holes to each car mount where it attaches to the rotisserie as an extra fail-safe. Without them the side to side movement is just restricted by the allen head pinch bolts, nothing actually goes though the beam. Does now! I still need to adjust the rotisserie to get the car centred in terms of centre of gravity. If it's too high or too low relative to the rotational centre line of the car, it will be like a turtle and roll onto its back or as it currently sits, I dont think I'd be able to rotate it as it sits as it needs to lift the whole car up as it rotates. Ain't happening... I'm going to be nervous as hell the first time I go to spin it on its side...
    • Oh yes done this when the window started flopping around.  Turns out the guides that run along the rail chanel had crumbed way. Took off the door card and pulled out the window mech, then the window, which you have to pull out through the top. As said unbolt the guide rail and don't spend 30 minutes getting frustrated trying to find a way to slide it out upwards cause that don't frigging work. Drop it down and out through the door hole. All I did to repair it was slice some 10mm clear plastic tube, vertically, then screw it to the guide rail both sides. This tubing rolls inward on both sides and leaves a gap wide enough to hold the window. To finish all I did was lube the plastic tube with olive oil and Bob's your uncle . . . well if he has the operation he can be your Aunt ! !  10 bucks in plastic tube and another 5 minute job done again . . . . YEH BULLSH#T ! My love for Skylines knows no bounds !
    • So was there a solution to this problem? I’m having this issue now.
    • not expensive, just irreplaceable if you don't go sub 60 at wakie in that thing people will start talking
    • I haven't replaced that, but I have had the doors apart on the r32 a couple of times The door skin will be held on by a combination of clips and bolts, just take it slowly and make sure all the sneaky hidden bolts are out Once the skin is off you should be able to pop that piece off pretty easily, looks like there are only 2 bolts holding it on
