Hey guys.

I am buying a GTR engine, and was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences between the r32 gtr engine and r33 gtr engine. Apart form the age difference is there any difference? Any physical changes? power or anything at all? Ohh and sorry but 1 last thing, do the v-specs have any more power thasn the standard engine in the r33 range? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Cheers Mark

Ok. Whatever i post, im getting it from the latest GTR special Issue of HPI. just want to clear that up now.

The V-spec (in the 33 at least) has the active diff and different ATTESA system. Doesnt say anything about power. But there was an N1 special which did have upgraded turbos, suspension tweaks better water and oil pumps. only a few hundred were made.

Both the 32 and 33 have 206kw@6800

torque: 32 = 353Nm@4400

33 = 368Nm@4400

redline: 32 = 7500/8000

33 = 8000

i personally dont know much about the differences, its all from HPI. This is what it says, and they know more than me as its their job, so it looks good.

enjoy

r33 engine has the larger crank drive for the oil pump, this makes oil pumps last alot longer as the engagement is alot sturdier. Everything else engine wise is the same from an internals point of view. r33 has pull clutch unlike th r32 which is push. Power wise the engines are the same.

yeah thats what i've read, the crank is a bit different for the oil pump. the pull/push type clutch is to do with the gearbox not really the engine...

but i have read that later R32 GTR engines changed to the pull type clutch? and probably the newer R33 crank.

yeah the latest r32s had the pull clutch.

The only real difference is the oil pump drive is larger on the 33 and you can always get the 32 crank modified to work the same way.

Re the water pump I had the same problem, the 33 water pump has an additional hole (slotted) that I needed to weld up, so the must be an extra bolt hole in the 33 block.

Otherwise all identical, nothing that affects power output.

I also saw that HPI article and I have never read such a load of garbage. Imagine comparing a 5yo to a 10yo to a 15yo engine by running them on a dyno, then claiming the newest engines are the best.

Crack the engine open you will find its all the same inside....which means a well re-built 32 engine will outperform a second hand 34 engine every day.

Late model 32's have the 33 crank , how do i know ? The 32 engines have different oil pick up strainer , its different where it mounts on the block . The 32 has a groove and it uses an 0 ring as a seal , the 33 is flat and it uses a gasket . I have had an engine with the earlier strainer , 32 water pump and the 33 crank and it wasnt changed i'm sure on that as the engine was original .

Duncan , i'm not so sure that the cil head is the same ( not saying its not though ) and the dumps are different . Overall though there is not much difference in all the rb 26's , the main reason for making more power in the 33 + 34 is the tune and more boost .

You are correct on the hpi crap , they say that the 34 turbos are steel wheeled as well , how would they know ?

Some guy was arguing with me about the 34 turbos , he said it was a well documented fact that they are steel wheeled because hpi said so , some people believe everything they read .

hey guys,

first of all thank you for your info. I was greatly appreciated. I have just bought today a R33 GTR V-Spec engine which is supposedly out of a 98' model. I don't know how to makje sure it's v-spec or if it's really 98 or a r32 model. Anyone know how i can find this out? it is out of a half cut.

Ohh and what motul ol do ppl use in these motors? Whats best?

thank you all for ur help.

Well they do have a steel intake wheels and ceramic exhaust wheels. My room mate bought a set off a friend of mine when he changed to 2530s on his 2001 Vspec II, as his 32 GTR spat its turbos.

yep all GTRs have steel impellor/ceramic exhaust turbos, except the N1 versions :D

wrxhoon I would be *very* interested to know if there were any head differences, I have never had 2 together at the same time. Thanks for the other differences you found, that is interesting....but of course none of them would affect the performance of the motor.

Yes there were differences in engine externals between 32, 33 and 34 but we are talking engine differences. External differences included turbos, dumps, exhausts, ECU tune, boost

You are right Duncan on the turbo bit but nur-specs have steel wheeled turbos as well .

I have had 32 +33 cil heads off the car but not side by side so i can only go on i have heard , thats why i said i'm not sure if they are the same or not . I never had a 34 head off the car so i cant say on that for sure .
