13.4 second 1/4 for your 'stockish' R33. (A how to guide).

Recommended Posts

G'day

I ran a 13.9 with a stock standard skyline and 12 pound of boost. no weight reduction, no exhaust, and $15 205's which REALLY didnt cut it. oh, and VISHES, running street tyre pressure is absolutely crazy. my first run i was, and was spinning third gear quite uncontrollably. does anyone know a site i can upload videos? i have the 13.9 and the 15.1 (stock tyre pressure) on video and time slips. changing tyre pressures will give you large increases in traction. also, another problem is smoking the tyre to much on the line. i have talked to many drag racing professionals that believe with street tyres, its wiser to merely 'clean' them on the burnout pad before staging. let me know wat u think, cheers :P

Hey new to forums.

Car aint a skyline but here goes.

12'7@108mph 1.9 60"

Mods are full zorst, fmic, .9bar, safc2 and filter. Stock motor, turbs and computer apart from safc. RB25

Car is commodore and weighs jus over 1400kg's

How can it be a stock turbo if its a commondore?

guys, i jsut went out and baught a Blitz DualDriven Supersound blow off valve, and since i got it on, boosting thru gear changes has reduced the lag phenominally, when u say u have backfiring yada, half the reason is because u have set tehm too restrictive/loose...

set them up right, and u will have no worries what so ever, atm im getting back fires thru shifting but thats because i loosened up the BOV:D

in a whole wid the BOV its so much "smoother" but the problem with it , is that it feels the car is slower, when infact its not, its just alot cleaner thru the cdhanges, so its not so jerky as to make u feel the car is going super fast....

the aftermarket BOV can not and does not reduce lag over a correctly operating factory one on a stock turbo.

What 'feels fast' and what is fast are often two different things.

The great thing about skylines is that you don't need to spend $100 + on a new BOV to make them do fast times.

nismogtsx,

My carbon canister looks connected, and is at the fuel tank end, the manifold leak..er pipe side I have blocked and rejoined the pipes so they look factory.

smallish open (to canister) holes to your manifold good for performance?

Nope!

how do i disconnect the carbon canister? i dont even know where it is?

Hi,

Just wondering at what RPM you guys are launching your cars.. I've got a SII R33 RB25DET with 3" inch turbo back exhaust, FMIC, 12psi boost standard rims and tyres and I dont think i can even run low 14's. I've tried running approx. 1/4 mile (informal) run and only get 14.5's to 14-8's. I launch at 2500 - 3000rpm with very minimal wheelspin. Flat shift etc. I can beat most mildly standard R33 skylines very easily in the area I live in so they must be doing at least mid 15's.

So can someone who's got an actual timeslip of their time they've run, with a list of mods (remember this is supposed to be stockish)pm me...

Lastly any help on the launching would be good. Thanks.

Steve

scooby_steve,

Have a look at your 60ft times and then check out your terminal speed.

If you have a 60ft of say 2.2 or better and a terminal of 100mph / 160kmh then that is good enough for a 13 second pass.

If you are still in the 90's for mph and have a 60ft of 2.3 or greater that will tell you something about your present time slips.

There is a 'drag' section under the motorsport part of the forums which would be good for you to place a thread under too.

Hi,

I've done one run with a G-tech and i did a 14.5 at 162kph (as stated by the G-tech)... I didnt have a look at my 60ft time though... There was a little wheel spin but was moving pretty well ie, not sitting in the same spot and spinning... what am i doing wrong? I've bought myself a cheap, must be first model G-techs, to practice on so maybe i can better my times.

thanks guys

.

Scooby_steve,

As you are probably aware the g-tech is simply not comparable to a real drag strip. If you have been to one you know what I mean. The title of this thread reffers to a real drag strip time. You will find the surface on a drag strip quite a bit different to a road surface. In particular you will find there is a finer line of traction to aim at vs a normal road. You need to hit the bullseye between bog down and wheelspin. G-techs will tend to give you a much better time than you will get on a drag strip.

Hey rev210,

i recently attented the NDSOC Drag Day at heathcote and the best time i could do was a 14.07@97mph. My 60' time was 2.1 also.

My current mods are exhaust from frontpipe back (no dump), bleed valve set at 12psi (some cheap brand and may not be reaching desired boost in 3rd and 4th gear), GTR intercooler, Pod filter (no sheild), and the tyres are HANKOOK K104's 265/35/18 at 36 or 37psi (i know its very high).

What do u think my problem is as to why i can't get into the 13's? Also what would u expect a car with my mods to achieve?

Sorry for all of the questions, u probably get a lot of people asking but u seem like u know what u are talking about so i thought u would be a good person to ask.

Thanks, Mike

:D

Hi,

Rev210 I much appreciate your help..I'd love to get to a drag strip but there just aint one near me and I dont feel like driving 4hrs to one (closest one).

So from you've said, I should be pulling roughly bout 15's?. I know a mate who's got consistent 13.4 - 13.5 sec pass (official time from a drag strip, papers and all) and he ran on a G-tech and could only get 13.8's (same setup etc).

Lastly, any launch tips for the time when I get on a proper track? PLEASE? RPM, tyre pressure etc would be great. Thanks again.

Steve

HKS-R33,

You have a fairly low terminal speed. This is most likely a lack of power to make a 13 since your 60ft is pretty good. You are doing the right thing off the line but, perhaps because your Pod filter has no heat sheild you are sucking in lovely hot engine bay air instead of ambient temp stuff, making your power die off.

My old R33 gtst had an exhaust and pineapples only (everything else stock) and ran 13.8's pretty easy on 205's. Get a heat sheild and see how you go.

Scooby_steve,

Bummer you aren't near a drag strip. G-tech's are ordinarily on the side of faster street times but, at the end of the day higher or lower it's not equal. It's probably the best tool you have however to prepare you for the track since you can practice various launches and tyre pressures.

Tyre pressure wise 20psi is usually quite effective for most street compound tryes. I'd say the launches rpm wise you do on the road will need a little more refining once you hit the strip but, it's the best starting point.

well i haven't got a skyline, but in my chaser i ran a 14.06 @103mph with a 2.38 60ft time running standard SMIC and running 8.5psi (9.5 on the spike). I just couldn't get off the line even with the auto as i had bald tyre :)

I'm having a guess with a 1.8-1.9 60Ft mark with the same mph i would be in the mid 13's

Well after reading this thread, im fairly convinced this is the way to go, but im interested in cost, as I couldn’t see it anywhere. This is my guess at costs, can someone tell me if I’m on the mark?

$70 .* K&N panel filter inside stock airbox

$700* 3inch FGK cat-back exhaust (very quiet and probably more restrictive than some exhausts)

$200* 3 inch stainless dump pipe off the turbo 'wrapped' with DEI thermal tape to the cat. This dump does not have a sepparate wastegate screamer or feed pipe.

$150* Diff Cradle kit or 'pineapples' , the Whiteline kit No. KCA349.

$600* Ogura Lightwieght flywheel 4.8kgs.

$500* Ceramic puck sprung clutch and stock pressure plate

$20 .* Wrapped turbo to intercooler pipe (DEI thermal tape).

Free * Removed panel behind stock intercooler.

Free * Timing set around 20+degrees advance.

Free * disable the carbon canister fume feeds to the intake.

$100* Turbo smart bleed valve (cheap one) set to 10psi boost

On Car* Simex 205/50 16 inch rear tyres. let them down to 19psi.

$30 .* NGK coppers ...6ES gapped to 0.7mm

$2370 Total Cost???

Now im guessing most of those would be NOT fitted, and not having time/tools to do it, I would guess around $200 for clutch fitting, $50 for pinapples and $150 for exhaust, bringing total to approx $2800?

Thanks

Lee

Hey all i just signed up, i bought myself an r33 gtst (LOVE IT)

i have a problem i was wondering i could get some advice on! since i bought the car it will only run upto 5 pound boost or less. I tampered with the plumbing and managed to overboost the car. I have changed it bk since. i am going to wire the solenoid 2 moro to give constant 7 to 8 pound boost and see if it acually works, gets it upto my desired boost level.

any help would be awesome!

So i have a aftermarket blowoff valve(with a plum back) already fitted to my r33 .3 inch exhaust with a dump pipe no if i change the blowoof valve back to a stock one am i going to notice any differance or shall i just leave it the way it is?

Got my car on the dyno the other day and it was making 173kw on 12psi and 181kw on 13psi. I thought this kind of power was ok for the mods i have. So rev210, u got any ideas as to why my terminal speed is slow?

My boost was actually bleeding from 12psi down to 9psi?

Could this have been the reason?

I recently got a new boost controller from simark87, and it seems to be holding better.

Sorry bout the stupid questions, its just that im going down to the drag strip in the next couple of weeks and dont wanna be stuck in the 14's again.

P.S: Check my post further up for mods and time etc.

Thanks for ur help

Mike

What kind of ECU are you using? What are your Air/Fuel ratios like?

    • Hey all, not sure how active SAU is anymore but will ask away anyways. Just wanted to get some experience on the 2008 model GTR CBA model.  I've hit that age in my life (43) where I'm like fk it time to get my dream (midlife crisis) car. Looking at importing one in and seeing if these can be reliable if the main flaws are fixed up. Plan is to keep money aside to do the following straight off the bat to future proof it: * install a stage 1 rebuilt trans with all new bits and pieces.  * install a new Bellhousing from the later model GTRs. Or potentially an upgraded stronger version like MAD or ATR. Besides the above two things and typical maintenance items anything else you'd recommend doing.   Been speaking to a few people and the engine on these are very reliable apparently. But keen on the view of the community here. Hoping to find a nice grade 4.5 with low mileage in Grey. I'd go black but swirls too easy. Look forward to your responses and feedback. Cheers
    • Do Alan and Keith work on Skylines now? I remember buying stuff from them when I owned my Ralliart Lancer a few moons ago. Definitely genuine guys and be excellent if they dealt with the skyline platform as well.
    • Hey all, I'm Gaston from Sydney's West.  I was a member on here when I was a younger lad and owned a mint R33 GTS-T. Ended up selling it and getting married having kids (yadda yadda) we all know how the story goes. Now I'm back with the intention to get my midlife crisis (dream) car ... a R35 GTR.  You'll see me about asking questions and searching the forums. Good to be back and can't wait to get back an Import again.
    • I have to put something here in order to post the photos. From what I could gather there's more enthusiasm for modified cars now than there has been for years. There were probably more younger people there than older (me included lol) which was a good sign.  It did seem like the record least amount of representation of the 90's era hero cars on display though. Like maybe one or two examples of S-chassis Nissans, and maybe 3 or 4 R-chassis. By comparison there were a lot of Civics from that era but in all there were about 10 - 12 EG/EK Civic Type R.  Euro exotics are always there in large numbers, led by Liberty Walk...... say what you will about kids using markers to scribble on a Ferrari F40, it did seem like a stunt to infuriate Ferrari enthusiasts, or Ferrari itself. I wonder if there's something more to it. Either way LBWK have done some heinous things to a Lamborghini Miura this time. They should stop now.
    • Engines and drivelines are not war stoppers for me mate, busted arse bodies and un-obtainium parts and panels are though Both cheap Brumbies I looked at had trashed tubs and a fair bit of rust
