A range of other features make shooting more fun. Five Colour options comprising Standard colour, Vivid colour, Black-and-white, Sepia, and Cyanotype can be used to achieve creative results. A handy AF-assist illuminator function makes it easier to achieve sharp focus when shooting in poor light. A useful Blur Warning function alerts users of shots compromised by camera shake, giving them the choice to record them or not.

The Coolpix 5100 is also compatible with a wide range of rechargeable and disposable batteries, including inexpensive, readily available alkaline batteries. There's also an AC adapter available as an optional accessory. Like all Nikon Coolpix cameras, the camera is supplied with a multi-voltage charger; with the 5100 are also two rechargeable nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries. The new-generation power circuitry in the Coolpix 5100 enables more than 250 shots in normal use between charges - a truly convenient cost-saving, go-anywhere power solution.

For underwater applications, or where harsh environments complicate the care of the camera, the Coolpix 5100 can be secured in the optional accessory housing WP-CP1. This allows full operational control of the camera down to depths of 40 metres.
