i know this has been discussed before, but my enginee is making a tapping noise from idle to 4krev its always there i am currently looking at getting a screwdriver and listening to the diffrent parts of the engine. its either injectors or tappets....

could cleaning the injecters fix the problem if it is injector related.....

i bought the car and it didn't make that much noise but now after the first oil change its always there and anoying... any ideas how to fix the problem

my rb25 developed this noise after about 80,000k's of use. i was told by several work shops that its fine. engine @ 130,000 and still going fine on same injectors. they used to be silent as then one day noticed they make tapping noise

I've got the same sound in my R32 RB26

So do you guys think that it's the tappets or the fuel injectors.

I tried listening with the stethoscope thingy and couldn't tell where it was coming from.

If it is the tappets and it doesn't get louder do you think that it'll be alright.

Is there any sure way to tell. I'm thinking about throwing in some thicker oil to see if it goes away, otherwise how would I tell which it is?

Is it more of a ticking sound rather than a rattle?

I've noticed that my last 2 sets of single pintle 550 injectors were pretty noisey and that was a ticking/clicking sound.

The last set of buggered lifters i heard were more of a rattle that got significantly louder with revs. There's a big difference in the sound. What sort of car are we talking about here as an rb doesn't have tappets.

Right right, Lifters, I don't know what I was thinking.

Which reminds me, I have yet to put a load on the engine, so the lifters might not be tight yet. The motor probably sat for at least a year so I'll have to see what happens once I get it out on the road.

Yes, it's definately a ticking / tapping sound. The frequency increases with rpms, but doesn't get any louder. Do the stock injectors make some noise themselves, I mean 440 is a pretty good size injector.

  • 1 month later...

not sure mate my rb26 has 550cc injectors and it makes a similar noise to what u r discribing and fairly loud to, also a slight noise from the lifters in my car but can hardly hear it ova the injector noise

    • Hello! I'm new here, I have an R33 GTST that is currently being finished up! Last year was pretty rough, blew two stock turbos so I decided to build the car. Has been down since November, but I get it back next weekend!
    • Hello, I believe my car was imported to America in the 2000s by Kaizo Industries. Would anyone be able to help me find more info on them? I've only found all the basic stuff like that paul walker bnr34, them being shutdown by feds, just stuff like that. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!
    • I am using Motec M150.  I am not working on the car myself actually.  My workshop is giving all these info, they are quite reputable in the industry and are very familiar with Motec and RBs and have done a few big setups with VCam and single turbo on RBs.  In fact, they built and tuned my engine from day one.  But they are stumped with my engine at the moment and cannot work out how come the compression is so low with the VCam. They told me that they have now swapped in some Kelford cams (without the VCam) and can achieve around 130psi compression and the low end torque is better, but now the engine is doughy as.  It boosts and peaks at more than 1000rpm slower, with twin HKS GTIII RS, it doesn't get full boost until over 5000rpm. I have always thought the VCam was a bit disappointing at the low rpm. To a point I had to ride the clutch a fair bit to get up a small hill from stand still.  That was when I had a clutch.  Now changing to a 8HP, I don't have that luxury and this problem has become a major issue. I am beginning to think the VCam never work since the day it was installed.  Maybe it was just sitting at the most advanced point, that is why it went good at top end but very ordinary at the bottom.  Therefore, with the help of the Holinger 6 speed and paddle shift, as long as it was moving, it drove pretty good.
    • yeah, there's a country that recently started importing Skylines, I blame them.
    • I don't have a printer, but could at least attempt to make a printable model.
