i think there is more to it than that.  New Zealand has an insane variety of cars.

and they also entirely destroyed they own automotive economy because of it?

Ever wonder why NZ is the poster boy for the Australian government to restrict low volume imports?

As I said before, my view is that Australia has such a limited variety of interesting cars due to having such a small market, and also to protect local production. The only market in Australia keeping most of the manufacturers alive is the corporate fleet market, this is why fleet cars such as the Camry, 380, Commodore and Falcon are produced here at all. Private buyers are a small segment compared to Japan or the U.S. and to make it even less desirable for manufacturers, here the second hand market is thriving. Then think about fun cars, performance enthusiasts are even a smaller and even more insignificant fraction yet again. The come the even smaller fraction of enthusiasts who can actually afford a new sports car...

So why would they bother?

I find many people overestimate Australias significance in the global automotive world, which sadly for us, is not up there with the big boys due to among other things our high labour costs, remote location and small consumer market.
