Hi,

I’ve seen a post on here before about this but I can’t find it anywhere after doing numerous searches :) So ill just ask again :D

What I wanted to know is how do I get rid of or re-rout that charcoal canister thing in front passenger side of the engine bay. If anyone knows how to do this or even know what im talkin about if you could help me out it would be great thanks.

Cheers

If you live in Australia I don't think that you would pass the (whatever the hell you guys call that test)

But if anyone knows the ramifications of this; I would be greatly interested as well since I do not have mine hooked up.

There should be two lines going into the canister.

Input, from somewhere, dont know where

Output, i think to pleumn

Vaccum

Just plug up the input with a bolt and hide the hose up in the sleeve that wraps the two hoses.

Btw, what are gains of doing this?

The charcoal canister is part of the evaporative emissions control system. It is basically a storage container that captures fuel tank vapours and purges them into the intake manifold. It's a mandatory piece of pollution equipment.

In the real world I reckon there would be sfa gains for a street car. Possibly none at all if the system is like others and only purges at idle/cruise (when it doesn't really matter). Personally I'd keep it just to avoid the hassles of explaining to the cops/rego why it's not there.

If you do try blocking things off, then make sure you know what you are doing. A fuel tank that loses it's ability to vent might cause some issues.

Could you expound upon that. I would like to block mine off as I dont' have much room left in the engine bay for one, and don't really feel like going through the hassel of reinstalling and locating one.

Can I just block off both lines? Or does one need to breath? I could use a mini filter instead of blocking it off. Is that necessary?

I don't know your exact circumstances but I get the feeling you are in the US doing some sort of conversion?

If you can get away with it easily (ie don't have to go through any rigorous engineering/rego process) then I can understand why you might want to leave it out to save some stuffing around. If it's not so easy to get away with (like our system here) then I reckon the stuffing around to install it will easily outweigh the effort that you will spend trying to fool cops/engineers/rego etc.

I'll look up my manuals at home and get back to you with my thoughts on how to remove the system. IIRC the fuel tank simply has a small line that runs into the charcoal canister. I can't see any problems just leaving this line unconnected (as long as its going to vent to somewhere sensible). FWIW the vent line on my 60's car just pokes through the boot floor. If you are going to leave it open I can't even see the point of a filter.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

And no, I have absolutely ZERO inspections here in Michigan, USA. I can cut the hardline wherever I want for the original setup. Currently it just ends at the bottom of the firewall. Intake side.

Edit: Stock R32 RB26 in S13. Will be driving it for the first time tomorrow :)

you could always relocate the canister to make room, on my s13 I thought mine had been removed, but it had been relocated to inside the passenger side guard, and I can only get to it by taking the front bar off. so its out of the way of my cooler piping..

NICE, it would take a bit of work, but I'll look into that in the future.

The lines are built into the rb26 and run behind the timing chain cover so it would take a bit of searching and will probably have to wait until I pull the engine again.

Im not doing this for performance gains at all just I have change my plenum to a forward facing item and havent got the 2 vaccum lines that used to go into the the standard intake, so now I really dont know what to do with it.

there is 2 vacuumlines that used to going into the plenum and 2 or 3 lines going in so I dont really know where what goes.

Its on an R33 GTS-t, so if anyone has done this to there car drop me a line so I can get rid of it.

CHeers.

Well if you are in oz then too bad. The carbon canister has to stay. If you remove it then expect to get hassled and possibly fined by cops/rego/EPA.

The solution to your dilemma is to get two vacuum lines fitted to your plenum.

I'll scan and post up the diagrams showing how this system works this afternoon.

ok, some diagrams:

If I was going to remove the system altogether I'd block off the connections to the manifold and leave the tank vent open, but locate it in a suitable place so it's not going to fill the cabin up with fuel stink.

If I was going to disable the current system I'd fit a small tee (hidden obviously) into the tank vent line so it can vent as normal and I'd block the purge line into the manifold. However, I can't see the point in diabling this system. It appears to only purge when under vacuum, which for a turbo car, isn't exactly a major concern from a power perspective.

Why dont you just relocate it under the guard or something?

You can also get much much smaller charcoal cannisters off other imports. I just spotted one while wandering around Jusy Jap; it looked exactly the same as my R32 one but about a third the size.

Easy fix.

ill be 100% honest

i cant even remember cause i did it when i first got the car, about 3 years ago

ill try and find the info i used

i thik it was just basically block everything off and let the fuel line vent to atmo.

i imported my car and i've never had one that i know about...i posted a thread bout it ages ago coz i noticed a hose had nothig attached to it...could this be one reason along with the car running rich, as to why my boot is covered in soot.

sorry to highjack btw

  • 3 months later...

I removed mine a couple of weeks ago because i made a custom heat shield/box for my pod and the canister was in the way (didnt even have any lines goin to it when i bought it). Both purge and vac lines blocked off about 50mm from the plenum and the fuel line is venting to atmo.

    • Those car show concepts from the 2000's and 2010's like the Floria and IDx were brilliant and should've gone ahead, at least one of them. But neither Honda nor Nissan are thinking about affordable performance any more, which is truly sad.  Even if Toyota's liquid hydrogen ICE development reaches the point where it's commercially viable and the infrastructure to support it, Honda/Nissan would have to wait until Toyota allow fee access to their patents to offer it with any smaller performance models they released to take advantage of it.
    • A sporty manual RWD coupe with a IL4 Honda engine would only be a good thing I assume we won't see anything released for a few years though, unless informal talks and designs have been going on for a few years,  and due to the current, and future, emmisions and safety requirements, I assume anything "sporty" they would do would be at least some hybrid thingie And hopefully anything they are thinking of has nice lines, without lots of plastic and fake bits hanging off it like that horrendous FK8 that looked like it was designed by a 13 year old The other issue of course in the current market is cost, currently the type R is around $70k, a twin is around $50k Meh, I'm old and grumpy and would rather buy a older model car and waste my coin on that than buying anything currently available new
