R32 Wont Start, Makes Odd Grinding/wining

Hey,

I have an 92 R32 GTS-t Manual

When i try to start my car sometimes it cranks over fine but most the time it cranks for a bit and then there is a wining grinding noise coming from the starter/flywheel, i thawt it sounded like the starter wasnt engaging so i fitted another starter and stil the same prob. I tried to start it tonight and i could smell an odd smell afterwards, like a burning electric motor and the solenoid was hot.

Ive replaced the main ignition and main fuse in the fuse box in the engine bay aswel.

I cant think what it could be causing this prob.

I dont know whether this is related but a few weeks ago i had a relacement g/box put in, the problem started a week later.

Also a few weeks ago my car began to play up, sometimes i would start it and it would sit on 100rpm (hardly running) and wouldnt pick up if i gassed it. id have to turn the car off n on etc. then when it got goin sometimes it would hesitate, the same feeling you get wen u run out of fuel (when it does this the boost seems to spool up quickly). It would also cut in n out as i accelorated. This problem began with it stalling at the lights a few days running.

If anyone has any info on these probs that would be great.... i hate electrical probs!

perhaps you should look at the pinion that the starter connects with, it could be damaged. If you had a gearbox put in recently, get the place that installed your gearbox to come and have a look at it for you.

As for the other problem, could be AFM maybe

Hey mate, cheers for the reply. What do u mean by the pinion (i take it its nothing to do with the flywheel). Conviently the place that fitted the gearbox said "bring it in"

if u have racv roadside assist, u can get them to tow the car...

or try push starting it maybe

The gear that starter motor pinion engages with is what i meant. did the gear/pinion on the old starter look f**ked?
