On the contrary. A FMIC did nothng to dull resonse in my previously lethargic mid range, infact, I've never had response so good. I appreciate that your goal is to run good times on the stock intercooker, but that doesn't discount the fact that more power and quicker response is there for the taking with a front mount.

Don't get me wrong, I'm with you 100% on pushing the accepted limits. Getting a consistent 1.9 60' will probably prove to be the most challenging part of it. I wish you luck! :P

The old turbo lag from extra intercooler pipes crap is an old wives tale, I never experienced any. The day I had my SAFC tuned along with other R33's my car produced 20-30rwkw more than the others and the only difference was that I had a FMIC the rest didn't, since that day some have fitted FMIC's and now make the same power as me, but I guess that just makes our cars slower now right?

Actually, I never said that Ben or Jim worked for any magazine, I believe that Ben concentrates on making the videos now... What I did say, was that I take all published dyno figures with a grain of salt, because I know how easily figures can get skewed. Simple statement, but take it as you will.

I know that Jim is a good tuner. He tunes my car.

Young man, I believe a shackle is something you hold a trailer on to a tow hitch with. If you want to have 'words' with me here then please learn common English. Its free its taught in most schools in this country and goes a long way towards making you credible.

Why not? I personally have had lotsa run-ins with Merli before, but i've never brought anything remotely racist into it. Picking on people about the way they try to speak english isn't the best comeback, especially for someone who writes for an internationally known magazine......

the funny thing about dyno comparisons between intercoolers is the flow of air around the car does not even remotely resemble driving on the road. And since external airflow is one of the biggest factors effecting an intercoolers performance you might find the dyno skewing the figures a fair bit, especially since the peak power figures in 4th gear are taken at around 160+ kmh. Do you really think the intercooler is getting the same amount of air through it on the dyno as 160kmh+?

But, I'll give you that the larger front mount picks you up the power anyway. Where it does not help is in the time taken for air to travel from turbo to plenum at boost of 10psi or less, time my friends that costs you in the 400m.

Larger turbo is the time to go a larger cooler, fine if you always intended to get a big turbo go buy a bigger intercooler. I am not against front mount intercoolers at all, its just I think they are poor value for money for people like me who don't want to visit the circuit racetrack on a regular basis.

Finally, let the intercooler champions put their money where their mouth is : run some better times than I do, with the same basic mods and I'll give the idea some more consideration. Thats fair isn't it?

Rev - what would be really interesting is if you could give us some 70-140km/h 3rd gear, 100-160km/h 4th gear runs, and we can *try* and compare them to what other people are doing.

You know the 'cruise to 70km/h in third, level off on speed, then just mash the go peddal until you hit 140km/h'.

That takes out the launch (which alot of people find hard, me included :mad: , and the wild spinning in 1st and 2nd gear) and would show us how well your car revs out with the lightened flywheel and your tune etc, in comparison to what we have with our cars.

I think this about the only other way we can make comparisons ??

good idea.

You can use the 330ft to 660ft and 1000ft time differences on the 1/4 mile time slip.

For instance on the 13.4 run ---

a) 330ft = 5.74sec

B) 660ft = 8.74sec

c) 1000ft = 11.3 sec

d) 400m = 13.4sec

b to c takes 2.56 sec, thats probably 3rd gear, but people can make a few comparisons there if they like.

Surely if you got a good launch, and hit the 330ft marker at a higher speed, the time between 330, 660 and 1000ft markers would be less than if you got a crappy, wheelspin-city launch?

I'm not sure if that's right though...

The only way you can do a true comparison is to hold it at 80km/h until your speed is level then mash it too 140.

Plus the fact I don't think many people will want to mark out 330ft and 660ft markings on a highway somewhere :mad:

thats more hassle than I can be bothered with(its true I am very slack), besides the fact that if I use a stop watch, well we all know how accurate they are.

'People' should go to the drag strip, I wouldn't want them losing their licences on my account.

Just to add to that (couldn't be bothered hitting the edit button - love this quick reply thingy :mad: ).

This comparison might give us an idea of turbo spool up times too. The light flywheel should get the motor reving faster which should/might bring it on boost faster compared to a car with a FMIC that is supposed to have lag.

I think it would be very interesting.
