i finally got myeslf a car

and b4 u laugh at it just listen

its a 1997 hyundai excel - SOHC 1.5(?) litre engine

5 speed manual, a/c, p/s

137 000 kays

1 owner since new - my auntie who drove it carefully (not like me then - lol)

grand total of $4000

which i reckon is a bloody good deal

ohh and she got lightly tapped on the drivers side door about 3 years ago which has been fixed up properly

no chassis damage or engine damage from that either

and a bit of a dodgy 3rd gear change - bit sloppy

apart from that it is in top condition (she had had new tires put on and a $150 detail b4 she sold it to me too)

it does - i think around 500 to almost 600 kays out of a tank(?) - but i think that it pushing it a bit too far

and considering that they sell for about 6500-7000 grand privately in the paper

she was actually going to sell it privatly in the paper for about 5500 but because im her nephew she offered it for 4 grand so im laughing

My family has owned a Hyundai Lantra of similar vintage, and apart from needing a new transmission at 100,000kms, it was really reliable. Right up until it started to fall apart at the seams after 180,000kms. This car never missed a service and was pampered its entire life.Another transmission failure, numerous electronic problems, alternator failures, various engine part failures etc. So my advice - enjoy cheap reliable motoring, but ditch the car before the magic 180,000km mark. I know an excel is different to a Lantra, but I wouldn't trust any 1990's hyundai after 180,000kms.

Enjoy the next 43,000kms :(

i used to have an excel before i got the skyline...

it was gr8 used to run 6psi :(

but yeah big rizza is right.. they get abit dodgy towards the 180k mark..

also there not *as* slow as everyone makes out :) cause remember its only 900kg

900kg? damn thats pretty light....................

most cars will start to have problems around 180,000 anyway...

my dad was gonna get one of these, just not too keen on the looks of the car.

Good car to learn on. I'd rather make all my beginner mistakes on a lower end car, that I'm not going to mind pranging or thrashing the crap out of.

And its easy on fuel and insurance, and not a complete cop-magnet, things which are also good in this day and age.

I look at all the car enthusiasts whose first cars were turbos or V8s, compared to the guys getting around in old bangers, and the latter can generally punt a car faster around a corner and a lot more smoothly than people who've always lived with a lot of power under the right foot.

I had one as my first car. Lowered on 16" wheels, it used to handle pretty well I thought. Learnt how to drive it real fast around corners. Understeered it everywhere in the wet - it was great! Would

be good if they were rear drive.

i would like to try it out in the wet - but i dont think that would be possible here in WA for a while - considering today is going to 32-33 DEGREES - FARKING HOT!!!!!!!!!

there are a couple of turbo ones getting around these days. there was one here in canberra, the owner thought he was sh1t hot, so i smoked him in my near stock R31!!! theres no moral to this story, i just wanted to post something!!! HA! :blink:
