Hey everyone,

I am looking at maybe getting a Soarer early next year, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to ask some questions? A good Soarer web forum or something would be ideal. I want information on prices for modifying the centre command centre on the V8 Ltd models. I want to know what costs I will be hit with if I decide to buy one. Mainly I want to know:

1. How much and where to go to convert the TV to Australian frequencies?

2. How much and where to go to convert the Sat Nav to Australian Maps? Else how much to add integrated navigation to command centre in non-nav equipped models?

3. I've heard you can get the system changed from Japanese to English text. How much/where can this be done?

4. How much and where to go to add a DVD player integrated into the centre command centre.

If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. I'm only really after ballpark figures at this stage. Or even better, if someone here could answer the questions that would be sensational.

EDIT: Interestingly, Just Cars quoted me identical insurance costs ($1826) for the V8 as the non-turbo six, both with the same quoted purchase price (arbitrarily set at $18000). What's with that?

I took a twin turbo Soarer for a spin before I bought the R32.

It had done 198,000kms but still drove rather well. It did smoke a little on cold start.

It was a little dougy for a fraction of a second but went quite well once up and running. It felt as if the auto would beat the dead stock 5speed R32.

It was quite nice to drive, handled well, nice and tight.

The only thing I didn't like about them was the digital speedo, kind of looked a little dated for some reason.

Hey Big Rizza,

Did you ever find out the answers to any of the above questions - thinking about getting a soarer tt as a second car.

Cheers

It's based on how often the cars crash. For example, a Mirage costs as much as an SS Commodore to insure because they crash so often. How well the vehicle performs doesn't really come into it. I found that turbo and non-turbo R33s were the same to insure as well. This information comes directly from someone that works for JustCar.

    • I know you don't want to hear this comment, but I can't not say it.  I just can't see 200kw being worth the time and effort. Its like guys with NA cars, putting in headers/exhaust/tune for a massive 20% jump in power. Great, the slow car is still slow and you're down $10,000.  My vote is leave it NA or price in a gearbox upgrade and shoot for at least 300KW, preferably 350KW+.  Now you have a NC that will try to kill you from time to time and will be exciting to drive
    • Ah yep. The main message I want to pass on is, try not to get scared of ghosts when thinking about knock/knock detection.  What I mean is, healthy engines make noise. Knock is also noise. Your knock sensor and ECU combo are trying to determine bad noise from good noise based on how loud the noise is. The factory knock sensors and ECU are not good at doing this.  Modern ECU's are pretty decent at it, however I'd still say that you would want to verify that if your ECU says it's knock, that you actually listen to it and confirm that it is correct.  Are you familiar with the plex knock monitor?  https://www.plex-tuning.com/products/plex-knock-monitor-v3/ I expect you're the type of person that would be very keen to play with something like this. It is great knock detection and you can pop some headphones on and listen to what's going on.  Knock that you've deliberately induced in low load low RPM areas is not really putting anything at risk and is a great tuning/learning/verification tool.  I just thought this was worth mentioning based on the way you were talking about setting up a base map and the Haltech base map settings. There are better ways to spend your time then chasing ghosts and worrying about detonation in scenarios that it is crazy unlikely to encounter it.  I was also wondering, what ECU are you planning to get? Will it be long til you pick it up?
    • This came quicker than I thought. It ain't even 2025 yet.
