Hey Squizz, did this idiot have an accent by any chance??? If he did and you can identify said accent, I may know where this asshole works!!

I can do much better than the police!!!!!!

Dave

Couldn't catch an accent through the helmet etc but he was a damn sight larger than I am and would be in his 40's.

For all those people who are getting agro about the bike riders that go up the middle... here's some food for thought...

On a bike you have nothing to protect you, you have people who merge on top of you without seeing you and you have people who just don't care as they're driving something up to 10 times the size of you and your bike. Its an unwritten rule, you either sit behind the traffic or you get in front, otherwise you get killed!!!!

Fair enough this guy is seriously in the wrong and i hope you get your car fixed etc at his expense, but that doesn't mean that because a bike rider goes up the middle of traffic that he's a loose cannon or complete asshole. Yes they are skipping the traffic cue, but also looking after themselves as there's nothing to protect them once you hit them!! This is just aimed at the people who were getting agro at those riders who go up the middle of traffic

Its his choice to ride a bike, with that comes its risks as with anything, something you have to keep in mind when riding a bike. Sure enough there it is alot more dangerous riding a bike on the roads, but thats the gamble you take if you want to ride sadly. If i can get fined and lose points for driving normaly on the roads than this guy should be fined and made to pay back what damage he has done. Its his choice to break the law by going up the middle of cars during stoped traffic.

That's fair but I have no regards for the safty of a biker who rides up the middle of traffic WHILE ITS MOVING!!!!!!! Hey if they want to do that expect me to give them hell as I always do......

Nothing any one can say will ever change my view on that, coming from a bike rider in the past too.......

Please don't group all bikers in with the mentality of the moron listed at the top of the thread. Regardless of whether you're on a bike, in a car, you're a pedestrian, or whatever, if you damage someone else's property you should take responsibility for it. I suspect that this "person" would be an arrogrant prick regardless of what mode of transport he was using at the time.

I don't understand the problem that people have with bike riders cutting through STOPPED traffic, except in situations where (like in Squizz's case) they don't leave enough space. If you have to worry about handlebars taking your mirrors off, it's too close. If they are obviously taking considerable care, then I don't have a problem with it.

Don't forget that nearly all bike riders drive cars too and are exposed to exactly the same things from bike riders when in their cars. In my experience, car drivers are a lot worse to bikers than vice versa. On my bike I've had people merge onto me while looking me in the eyes (so they knew I was there), obviously thinking "he'll move or get run over".

And before I start, for what it's worth I don't split moving traffic, or traffic stopped at lights. I *only* split lanes during a traffic jam, and then it's at a pace where I can literally stop on the spot (usually <20km/h). That said I don't care if people want to split lanes, as long as they're sensible about it. I've seen idiots split lanes on the back wheel. Feel free to open your door/swing your hiab out on them.

Any bike that lane splits when I'm up front gets a rude shock when the lights go green. Report the plate....take the f**ker down.....then laugh at him when you see him again.

And no amount of cake can shut my hole on that topic.

I agree *if* the biker is causing a problem by splitting. If he is going up the middle and leaving plenty of space, and makes a decent effort not to hold up traffic when the lights go green, then I don't care if one goes past my window. Note that deciding to hold the throttle flat just to make it hard for the bike to pull back into traffic does not mean that the bike was the one causing the problem. That's like blaming the toaster for electrocuting you, when you were the one jamming the knife in it.
HMM... im always tempted to open my door everytime i see them coming up behind me in traffic and say -- ooppss.

I had some moron in a car do that to me one time when I was idling through completely stopped traffic (as in, people were locking their cars and walking across the road to the shops). I was doing all of about 15km/h, and this guy got all agro and kicked his door open in front of me and screamed "why can't you <bleeeep> just wait like everyone else has to?". I calmy asked him that if there was a perfectly safe way for him to get through the traffic jam, would he take it... he said "that's not the <bleep> point" etc. It's just a case of people getting the shits that you can get through when they can't. I gave up trying to reason with him when he began threatening violence... I ended up having to tell him to either try hitting me (me in full suit of armour and kevlar knuckles = teh win), or to shut his door and let me get the f*ck on with my day.
That's fair but I have no regards for the safty of a biker who rides up the middle of traffic WHILE ITS MOVING!!!!!!! Hey if they want to do that expect me to give them hell as I  always do......

Exactly. Splitting moving traffic is stupid.

If there isn't room, then don't do it. I cannot stand it when wankers on Harley's try it and end up having to lean the bike way over to avoid a mirror and they almost always look like they couldn't lift it if it fell!!

I repeat.... If there isn't room, then don't split the traffic.

Having said that, if they get to the front and cannot beat me, then pick a lane at least and be gracious in defeat, don't get nasty and try to kick my pride and joy. I will follow you to the ends of the earth and snap you in two!! Rant over....

Yeah report the tard...splitting lanes has always been illegal, no it's not a safety for bikes thats why they do it kinda thing.

It's a dangerous thing to do and the impatient prick deserves what he should get, a fine and a repair bill.

It's only illegal if the traffic is moving. You cannot overtake a moving vehicle in the same lane. BUT you can pass a stationary vehicle in the same lane.

It is a case of being pedantic with laws that don't really apply to the exact situation. There is no actual law that deals with "splitting" lanes on a bike.

BUT this incident has naff all to do with that.

His vehicle collided with your stationary vehicle that was in a valid and legal position on the road. He is at fault and liable for damage that he has caused to your vehicle.

Book him Danno

(heh, just realised, probably no-one under at least 30 will get the Hawii Five-O referance)

    • I think the concept is highlighting the various scenarios where thicker oil helps, and thicker oil potentially doesn't help and only generates heat and costs power, in turn for safety which isn't actually any safer (unless you're going real hot). If anything this does highlight why throwing Castrol 10w-60 for your track days is always a solid, safe bet.
    • Jason should have shown a real viscosity vs temp chart. All the grades have very little viscosity difference at full operating temperature.

    • Yep, if you are applying filler it sounds like there is something wrong with the body lol. Safe to assume there is going to be a lot of sanding going on if your still applying fillers.  Picture a perfect bare metal panel, smooth as glass. You lay down your primer, it's perfect. (why are you going to sand it?) You lay down the colour and clear, it's perfect. No sanding at all took place and you've got a perfectly finished panel.  You won't be chasing your tail, sounds like you were prepping to start laying filler. If your happy with the body after the sanding, there is some bare metal exposed and some areas with primer, no issues at all, start laying the filler. You are safe to lay filler on bare metal or primer (of course check your technical data sheet as usual for what your filler is happy to adhere to).  This isn't a 100% correct statement. There is primer that is happy to adhere to smooth bare metal. There are fillers that are happy to adhere to smooth bare metal. Just make sure you're using the right materials for the job.  Typically if you are using filler, you would go primer, colour and clear. I've never seen any instances before where someone has laid colour over body filler (maybe this happens, but I haven't seen it before). So your plan sounds pretty normal to me.
    • I don't think there's any way someone is push starting this car.. I honestly can barely move it, and moving it and steering it is just flat out not possible. I'm sure it is, but needs a bigger man than me. I have a refurbished starter now. The starter man was quite clear and consise showing me how nothing inside a starter really should contribute to slow cranking, and turned out that for the most part... my starter was entirely fine. Still, some of the wear items were replaced and luckily it didn't show any signs of getting too hot, being unfit for use, etc. Which is 'good'. I also noticed the starter definitely sounded different, which is a bit odd considering nothing should have really changed there.... Removed and refit, and we'll pretend one of the manifold bolts didn't fully tighten up and is only "pretty" tight. GM only wants 18ft/lb anyway. I also found a way to properly get my analog wideband reading very slightly leaner than the serial wideband. There's Greg related reasons for this. The serial output is the absolute source of truth, but it is a total asshole to actually stay connected and needs a laptop. The analog input does not, and works with standalone datalogging. Previously the analog input read slightly richer, but if I am aiming at 12.7 I do not want one of the widebands to be saying 12.7 when the source of truth is 13.0. Now the source of truth will be 12.65 and the Analog Wideband will read 12.7. So when I tune to 12.7 it'll be ever so slightly safer. While messing with all of this and idling extensively I can confirm my car seems to restart better while hot now. I did add an old Skyline battery cable between the head and the body though, though now I really realise I should have chosen the frame. Maybe that's a future job. The internet would have you believe that this is caused by bad grounds. In finding out where my grounds actually were I found out the engine bay battery post actually goes to the engine, as well as a seperate one (from the post) to the body of the car. So now there's a third one making the Grounding Triangle which is now a thing. I also from extensive idling have this graph. Temperature (°C) Voltage (V) 85 1.59 80 1.74 75 1.94 70 2.1 65 2.33 60 2.56 55 2.78 50 2.98 45 3.23 40 3.51 35 3.75 30 4.00   Plotted it looks like this. Which is actually... pretty linear? I have not actually put the formula into HPTuners. I will have to re-engage brain and/or re-engage the people who wanted more data to magically do it for me. Tune should be good for the 30th!
