of course with progameable ecus you would retune the car when using a higher octane fuel... especially if you want to take advantage of the higer octane.... your stupid to think a totally differant fuel wouldnt cause problems.

why would a higher RON rated fuel cause problems?

If my car is tuned for 98RON, and I use 92RON, then yes it will.

But if it is tuned for 98RON, and I use 100RON, then the chances of pinging decrease, not increase.

The whole point to all of this is:

- Shell brought out a variant of optimax with 5% Ethanol.

- Nissan recomends we don't use it

- Some of us experienced problems with ethanol blended fuels.

I've ran 91 octane ULP.

It ran exactly the same.

The only difference being when you stick your foot in to it, she pings. :)

There's no reason why the car should run badly with an ethanol mix.

ummm.... 100ron.... aint japanesse fuel an even higher rating... why would our cars have a problem with it........ obviously its just tuning... reset the ecu should be fine... it will return to factory specs... as in japanesse factory specs where the fuel is a higher octane rating...

There won't be a problem, just to make use of the higher RON you'd probably want to tune up a little.

as for the ethonol... the media gave it the name its got...... id rather see the FACTs on this fuel.. strait from the product producer..... i dont think it would do much damage at all.... and seriously guys.... most of you would rebuild you engine before the effects this fuel supposably has are noticed....

I don't know about you but I tend to take the claims of the company that makes the product with a grain of salt... or a handful. The only reason ethanol is in petrol because johnny howard went to school with the biggest ethanol producing company's owner and has a few other 'mates'. Why would the people making ethanol tell you it's crap?

what im trying to say is why is there this big no no about it..... why would they put ethonol in fuel if damage caused by it could come back bite them in the arse.

and have nissan got proof it causes damage.... in fact i havent seen any proof. if someone prove me wrong id stand corrected. and you seem to be the only person that had a problem with this fuel so far.

look proven wrong i will stand corrected... but ive used ethonol fuel in my car for a long time.. dont have a problem with it.

Then it's not exactly the same is it.

What fact is that assertion based on?

Some info here.

The thing that will keep me off it is because it's just a way to make money for the 'boys'... the only reason we're getting ethanol is because we can produce it, howard's mates make it, they whack a tariff on it to stop cheap shit coming in from brasil.. ... there's no reason to use it other than that? Maybe reducing emissions but if you wanted to reduce emissions wouldn't you just switch to full ethanol?

There are several report floating around that show it causes damage.

Here's a link.

That's with 20% ....

Why WOULD you use it is the question. Things have been working fine now - why would you switch? When you look at the reasons they are pushing it (politics and cronyism) there's no reason to move?

I'm willing to be swayed but .. heh have a look at the pics :)

and then..

... you make up your mind

Exactly.

There are so many bullshit posts in this thread already, some of which are answers obviously pulled from ones arse, but this is the plain, undeniable fact that should prevent any of us from using it.

Your car is not designed for it, so dont use it!

WTF?

Mate, Ive tried E98 fuel once, with 50% BP 98, it felt different, but ok. I wouldnt use it all the time though, only if your down to the last drop (as I was when I used it) and need some fuel.

To refer to posts as being bullshit is a tad extreme........

i dont know why oyu have such a facination with ass's but seriously keep that to your self.

but just because you havent taken the time to reslove the problem when it could be a simple reset or retune doesnt mean you should deter people from using it. other people dont spend there day facinating over the male anatomy and usualy have time to fix little problems..

i use ethonol based fuel myself.... and when 100ron gets here ill used that aswell... dont see why i should stop others from using it jsut because i gota put a little effort in.. especially when in theory you should get a power gain.

I have used 10% Ethanol 98 from SAFF/Liberty servo's here in SA

First experience was a full tank (51 litres)

The car went well. Knock on the PFC was normal, water temp was normal

Economy was pretty poor, mainly due to the fact that I was giving it a bit to see if it knocked or not

I have used it a various times since, mostly with a bit of BP in the tank, and its been fine, economy has been within ~30kms a tank of what I'd get with BP98

Best bet is to everyone make up your own minds on this one

Early cases in the eastern states of engine failure where attributed to servo's running 40-50% mixes of the stuff

One thing I have noticed is that it on copper plugs the E10 fuel is A OK, on platinums, well it ran a little rough so I switched back to good ol' copper plugs

Maybe thats where there is confusion, what plugs is everyone running that has experienced probs with the Ethanol fuels?

WTF?

Not really. There are people quoting it's safe without any evidence.

I didn't quote why it is bad either. I regurgetated the car manufacturers recomendation, and explained my experience.

I don't care if anyone uses it and gains 5 seconds on their quarter mile pass... infact, good luck to anyone if they do.

If you have used it with no problems so far, then I'm happy for you to... (really, I'm not being sarcastic)

Don't females have arses?

What theory?

Did you read this theory?

Who wrote it, was it a creditable source?

What did this theory say exactly?

But when people start making assertions that could potentialy cause damage to others based on "It felt OK in my car that time", it just stupid, and it is bullshit.

aint you doing similar to just that... you had a problem but millions of others that have been using it for sometime now havent.... funny that.....

"it just stupid, and, it is bullshit."
lmao.

    • Haha actually I did join back then under a different email address,  I couldn't re-activate my account so made a new one! I didn't post much anyway so not missing out on much. Amazing to see how the value of the cars and parts has changed over the years, also ACT section appears to be dead now.
    • Thanks... It's in pretty good condition overall, probably due to not being drifted/tuned however being a daily driver has taken its toll. Had 100k on the clock when I got it, up to 180k now. Unfortunately it's not 100% dent free, it's got a small dent on FLH side and broken indicator from where I hit a small kangaroo at high speed. If you look at closely at pic #5 you might spot the dodgy trailer light repair my old man and I rigged up as temporary repair! - It's still there due to a combo of needing the car as daily driver and then too lazy/busy to fix properly. I've a couple of other minor accidents accidents as well but nothing major. One required a new front bar and unfortunately the smash repairer ordered the normal gtst one and not the aero bar. Needed the car back asap so just went with it, regretted ever since.
    • I can't believe that anyone is foolish enough to believe that the base maps are for any other purpose than to drive the car up onto the trailer/truck or gently creep it to the dyno. No matter how good they are, they can never be any better than the factory maps**, and only the foolish trust those on a significantly modified setup. **Yeah, yeah. I know there's also the difference between factory maps being fixed to certain injector sizes and MAP/AFM/VE relationships, and the likely aftermarket ECU base maps being better able to handle the sorts of changes that would render a stock ECU dangerous, like different sized injectors. But let's just ignore that for the moment, because the principle is still the same.
    • I'm shocked, you've owned a Skyline since 2006 and never joined SAU before now! 😮   Welcome, it's much quieter these days than it was in 2006, but lots of very knowledgeable ones lurk around here. I actually think in outage we've forgotten more about Skylines than anyone knows about them today... 😛
    • So it could give us some info. Such as we find out what number they started at, and we know how many of those blocks came before it.
