Police launch safer alternative for hoon drivers

Wed 16 November 2005

Victoria Police today officially launched its new community motor sport program, Operation Drag Right, at Calder Park.

Inspector Tim Peperkamp said the program, the second of its kind to run in Victoria, creates an alternative to racing illegally on public roads.

“With the ‘hoon’ legislation on its way, Operation Drag Right creates a safe and competitive environment in which to race against police and other drivers,” he said.

“The previous motor sport event run by Victoria Police was quite successful in fostering community relationships and reducing the instances of illegal street racing on public roads.”

Venue scrutineers will be present at all races to conduct safety assessments on all participating vehicles and ensure drivers are fully licensed.

Safe drag racing programs were initially introduced by police in the United States of America, and following the inception, instances of illegal street racing fell.

Programs similar to Operation Drag Right have been administered in Canberra, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia, and Tasmania is currently considering introducing the initiative.

Inspector Peperkamp said he expects the program to travel throughout the state to Bairnsdale, Ballarat, Mildura and Yarrawonga in the near future. A suitable racetrack is currently being developed in Colac, and other interested parties are encouraged to contact the Broadmeadows police station.

The first Operation Drag Right event will be held at Calder Park from 5pm on Friday 18 November.

It's about time the police came out and agreed that Track racing/dragging is acceptable.. Lets just hope for those of us who do attend Calder and are fortunate enough to line up against a police car (James are you willing to line up the Lada??) that you can actually beat them.. Just remember to take the number plates off before hand as I’m sure they will keep a keen look out for you if you do...

Lets also hope this does reduce street dragging and is as effective as it's implemented to be.

Good to see the cops on our side...

until you leave the venue and 10km's down the road on the calder they

1) hear you - EPA

2) see you - Canary + EPA

Simply put - bullsh|t media to win a few more minority votes.

Bracksie knows that with the IR reforms that he will stay in office when he should be outsed for all the traffic and related laws and abuse towards revenue raising thats gone on.

The IR fiasco is his ticket to another session in office. OPPOSE THE LEBO

heheehe

they need Legal ON STREET drags like the do in NZ...

block off a section of road in the industrial areas on a weekend and hold drag events... awesome to go watch cause ur so close to the action and its generally stuff all cost wise to enter

Although watching the SS on the news Fully ripping up the back wheels on the strip was kewl as... Not all that often you see a fully decked out cop car ripping them up...

lets hope they do the right thing and don’t use it to their advantage to book people.. if they do it will just have the opposite affect people wont go to calder and street dragging will increase...

at least if you crash on cochranes, there's a nissan, toyota, ford and holden wrecker on the same road, and about 20 panel beaters. and you'd do the run away from warrigul rd

lol nah run it in the opposite direction like they do the illegals... that way u have an up hill to slow down... doesnt even have to be a qtr mile... people wont care.

i owned some chick in a Civic lol i turned onto cochring not know there were drags on and me and some old due and his wife in a honda CRV got stuck there while there were hundreds of cars... i was in my car and couldnt reverse cause other ricers were behind us as soon as we turned.

the dude in the CRV ended up racing some tool in a gemini and owned him hahahahaha then i owned the chick in the civic and kept on driving all the wya home haha had no choice... cracked me up when the CRV guy gave it a go.

still dont condone it.

    • ADHD in all form isn't about "can focus, or can't focus" or is hyper active or isn't etc.   It's all a dysregulation. Either time feels to be stationary, or time just vanishes in a split second. We are either under focussed on the task at hand (as we're over focussed on our surroundings) or we have no idea an atomic bomb went off beside us as we're so hyper focussed and locked in on things.   Not to mention the rapid fire thought process. What it takes a "normal" process to think up a solution to a problem, ADHD will be able to give you 5 different ways to solve the problem, and the pros and cons of each. While we can be highly impulsive and lack the ability to "control ourselves" we can also become paralysed with the inability to make a decision for ourselves. While most of us have an OCD like requirement for perfection, we lack the ability often to remain focussed to get things to a perfect state. Those with undiagnosed ADHD as adults, can often find the last part actually stops them ever attempting to do things that they have the ability to do, as the reasoning is often "if I can't do it perfectly, it's not worth doing"   As for projects... Ha ha ha, I still need to take the other half of my wall trim down in the Fiance's office so I can paint it. Need to finish digging and running the back yard drains, my R33, getting the Ninja bike registered (now being sold), the moped project, fixing either of the lawn mowers so they're reliable, along with a myriad of other things.   It's why I've been going through lately and just being brutal and clearing projects off that I won't actually ever complete. IE, moped will go to the tip, or be given away, bike is being sold, Subaru project being sold, some parts for other projects given away. Or I've been making myself focus on one thing at a time, by ticking off the smallest quickest ones first.   There's also a reason by our mid twenties we seem to be "know it alls", as we've all been down some of the weirdest and oddest rabbit holes when you follow the dopamine trail. It's often also why we're more a jack of all trades, but not a master of one.   However, pretty much all of my hobby projects, in one way or another, all come back around to automotive. That's my zen area.
    • Remember reading about this not too long ago. been for sale for a long time  this is like when the wife says you need to sell the car so you put it up for a ridiculous price no one will pay
    • You are perhaps suggesting that it is not a super car? Well....it's not an AU.
    • Dropped the MX5 of this morning to get the hardtop colour matched and some PDR done, they are also going to give it a buff to remove some "stubborn" swirl marks and light scratches in the clear coat Over the last few months the poor little thing has copped some shopping centre car park abuse, I try to not park in them, but hitting Westfield's a few times over the last few months has taken its toll, nothing really bad, but enough of a trigger for a "while we're in there" thingie  Once it's back and all the one colour, with a few dents and mark's removed I'll give some of these products a go and see what they're like
