Hi guys, im new to all this, but i have a question.

I want to buy a R33 turbo automatic, but because of insurance i want to take the turbo off for now (im on my P's, dont want the power yet).. Is it possible to take a turbo off a auto gtst without big dramas?? If so, what things need to be done for it to been done properly?

New intake piping to remove the intercooler, new exhaust manifold, new exhaust to mate up to the manifold. Its not really worth it. Buy a non turbo, then when you want to take the step up to the turbo, by the turbo model :)

It would cost more than its worth, not to mention the car would run like an absolute pig as the ECU is tuned for the car running with a turbo. Insurance wont be cheaper either, its still a GTSt and will be considered a turbo model.

Screw the insurance, 3rd party baby!

That is if you have the cash to spend if you have an accident... also if you choose that route make sure you source a very safe alarm.

But as Amaru said... dont bother doing a turbo to non turbo conversion even if it is temporary... just find a cheap non turbs one and sell it when you feel like upgrading..

I'm also on my P's and have a turbo line... if your sensible and careful the power is fine... just take it easy and you'll be fine. No playing funny buggers and you'll be fine.

buy a non turbo skyline and then put turbo engine in later on. if u want to waste more dollars than its worth. the amount u would spend doing this even if u did get the car cheap wouldnt be worht the money u would lose in the end. just spend the extra and get a non turbo skyline, the sell it later when u want a turbo one abd buy one. simple fix. :P

How so?

I'm 18 and im still on my P's - i own an R33 on 3rd party insurance. I would much prefer comprehensive but for the purchase price that i picked the 33 up for, the insurance in 3 years is going to cost more then the original purchase price. I dont know about you, but to me thats an astronomical waste of money if I dont have an accident caused by myself.

Why not just go 3rd party fire + theft if you trust your driving enough? Accidents happen every day and if i happen to get myself into one, ill face the consequences - but if im lucky enough not to cause an accident while im on 3rd party - i come out ahead.

If mummy and daddy paid for my car or paid for my insurance, im sure i'd have comprehensive - but they dont pay a cent towards my car.

If insurance is ridiculously expensive you may be better off just backing yourself as a good driver. Though accidents do happen, so obviously there is some risk involved.

If you were to put the money you were going to spend on paying insurance into a savings account you could have a nice amount of money for mods or to buy a newer car. Also until you spent it you would have the money to fix the car if you did ever crash it.

im in the same boat as you, i forked out every cent for my car. and i only have 3rd party as well. but simply saying " screw comprehensive its a waste of money " isnt good advice.

sure you and me might be confident with out driving abilities, but not everyone else is you and me. thats what im getting at :D

Oh nah that wasnt aimed at you - it was just a general rant... i wish my parents forked out $5k a year for insurance :D

Thats fair enough, but i dont think "thats got to be the dumbest thing to say to someone" is the right choice of words when describing my solution to his problem seeings how you have used the same solution in your very own situation aswell (as you are on third party).

ok ok ok i see were your coming from with this.. how ever i own a rb26 s13.. im 19.. on my P's ANY insurance company wants at the absolute minimum of 9 grand to insure my car with full comp insurance let along the excess when worked out if i have any crash at all i have to fork out another 4500.. in my case... i just pay the 600 bux a year for 3rd party fire n theft

but with me saying that.. each year i put aside between 4 to 6 grand a year in an seperate account so also.. gain interest on it and i dont touch it unless i have a crash

if i have a crash i have up to 6 grand to go out and buy a nother cheap non turbo silvia which i can than transfer all my goodies into it with out any hassles..

now would you rather pay that 10 grand a year for full comprehensive.. or do things the way i do them now? i rather do things the way i do now.. for simple fact.. if i dont crash the thing in a year i keep my 9+ grand

how ever for a skyline.. not to sure on pricing and stuff for a cheap non turbo one that you can than dump all your shit onto.. but yer anyway my 2cents

      I have to agree like, yesterday, I was driving down the warringah freeway towards the bridge when this jackass driving a beaten up Honda civic cut me off so suddenly it made me almost yank the wheel to avoid him hitting my car. Honestly and he had the NERVE to flip me off (or some other gesture Idk). Im a calm guy, but really some people just dont deserve to have a license, let alone be allowed to drive on densely populated roads/highways. If youre gonna cut through lanes at least use the damn turn signal

      HPA do an interesting video on tuning, and Adrian shows on the dyno, moving from 10:1 to 12:1 (And I think even 13:1) and the power moves SFA. However, a couple of degrees of timing has a HUGE impact. Exhaust side of things will more be the length of the exhaust and how many bends and turns you have. The straighter you can keep it, the better. By a lot. Oh, and getting the diameter right. Bigger isn't always better. Going to big can actually lose you power.

      I have to say, most people I see on the road fit the bill of atrocious drivers. Whether they be cowboys in their dual cabs, bogans in the Commodores, or the soccer mums. Pretty much most people on the road put zero freaking thought into driving. Barely look further up the road then the end of their bonnet, and have never even thought about how catastrophically wrong shit can go, by doing what they all deem as normal driving. Especially their late braking, racing to stopped lights, and sitting half a foot off the bumper of the car in front at 110km/h. Wanna know what's even better? By the time their kids get to be old enough to learn to drive, they've already got in the back of their brain what is normal driving, how annoyed you're allowed to get at people etc, and then their parents who actually have zero freaking skill at driving (Even though they constantly say "I've been driving for 20 years and never had an accident!") teach the little twerps how to drive, or should I say, how to make a car move. Literally watched a parent teach their L Plater, on a 4 lane freeway, that you just slam the brakes on, and push your way over, even with a B Double bearing down on you, and that's how you should drive, rather then, just keep going to the next exit. Same shit happens all the time for side streets etc, watching numpties pull dumb shit turns pushing across 3 lanes of traffic, rather than just go up the road another 30 seconds, and take the next turn that'll get you to the same location... Oh, and the damn right lane bandits. Or the retards driving along with their headphones in, and can't hear the ambulance or fire truck right up their ass about to run them over...   Pretty much, people drive on the road, like ego centric f**ks, and don't actually think how dumb shit their driving is, how it could easily kill them or someone else in a split second, or at the very least, how they're driving is contributing to all the shit they're bitching about on the road, like shitty congestion!
